I guess the main problem with this type of reefing is the one I have encountered - the risk of breaking the gooseneck is comparatively high and could leave you in a nasty situation. Our gooseneck broke when a reef was being shook out - as the boom was unrolling, it was not kept centered, and the gooseneck failed. Looking at the break, there was a pre-existing crack for some time, and the added stress of rolling with the boom off center was enough to finish it off. Actually this is the second gooseneck of this type I have broken - the last one was on a previous boat about ten years ago. So the rule should be - always keep the boom centered when rolling/unrolling.
The other problem that occurs is boom droop as the sail is reefed deeply - on Soubrette, this meant that the boom would foul the sprayhood exactly when you most want it - upwind in bad weather.
This thread has thrown up some interesting details though - if you are going to use roller reefing on the boom, get a main with a luff rope. Conversely, for slab reefing, get a main with sliders and put a gate on the mast to keep the sliders in when you drop the main - as I have discovered, a main which comes out of the mast can be quite a handful when dropping to flake or slab reef. Never thought of this luff rope/sliders argument before.

Thanks

Ronan
