>Sula is very hard mouthed, she even carries weather helm with just the genny out ..
Ahh, now I start to understand. But why is that? I don't think such a characteristic is endemic to the class - is the genoa especially oversize?
Beachcomber is very well balanced under full sail in normal winds (and that's from someone who onced regularly sailed the standard to judge by, the original folkboat).

If you look at this pic.:

you can just see the tiller fixed amidships under full sail in about a F4 according to my logbook (sea state not to judge, it was a completely protected channel between islands) and sailing to windward. The preceding picture in the album, taken shortly before, shows the sail area. I'm a bit ashamed about the shambles in the cockpit, it's what comes of sailing alone, I guess.

>reefing single handed is a bugger!
Amen to that; it keeps me about as twitchy as the ship is! In fact it justifies why I so often drop the main entirely when I can keep up a good passage making speed.

How do you find sailing out of Hartlepool? I used to live and sail out of Whitby and was often in Hartlepool. It was always a grubby place because of the the industry with deck cleaning a regular necessity but the club was a very friendly place.

Best, Brian.
