She watched him carefully, taking in the sight of him with an impassive face, but wary of her words. His expression showed disbelief and disapproval over the idea, but whether he chose to believe it or not –it was fact. Yet, even though he thought she was telling lies, he proceeded to bombard her with more questions.

“I see no need to amuse anyone; I do not lie.” She told him quietly, returning his icy gaze with a stubborn one of her own. No, she would not overdue it, but she had her history and her former life to stand by, and she would defend it until the day she died. “Do you think I was born blind in one eye?” She stated in an accusatory tone, not directly towards him, but to the idea of that horrible battle in general. The day she had failed in protecting Lyra…that day she had failed as a Sarmatian.

“We move quickly enough, camps take a day at the most to abandon,” she stated calmly, the whole conversation was beginning to irritate her as well. She did not like being quizzed like some person on a game show, and he had no right to drag her in from the streets and question her. Of course, the king thought he could do as he pleased, but even absolute power had its limits –Baylina was sure of that. “Yes, we have leaders…” she said, answering yet another annoying question.

“Men kill alongside us; we are all Sarmatians. When I said a woman cannot marry until she has killed a man, I meant a man as in the enemy.” Baylina said, trying to clear things up, but at the same time she was only really answering him with yes or no. She had no intentions of disclosing much information to this overly curious king, even if he became angry although it would be difficult for him to see through her cautious evasion of his questions.

Baylina observed him for a moment, now prepared to take a stand for women, “Test my abilities and let me prove to you that I can kill a man…” Although she wasn’t in the mood to touch a weapon, nor did she think the king would even allow it, but it was worth a try. Bay just wanted to end the conversation so he would leave her alone and allow her to continue her endless travels…life no longer held the same meaning that she had once valued –not when she had lost everything that she had loved.
