I've just been informed by my "in-family computer geek" son that "Legacies" has become "invisible to the Web". Something to do with DSN stuff.

Will be emailing "Legacies" (he was kind enough to provide the email address so I could directly inform them, but I thought I would also post here.

Trouble is, I can "load" the front page of "Legacies", but unable to gain access to any of the stories, at least going directly to "Legacies". Which is too bad--it's one of my favorite sites.

Anybody else having trouble accessing "Legacies"????

October was a rough month - in the space of 4 days my hard-drive suffered a mechanical failure (meaning everything is unrecoverable) and my dog tripped me while I was walking her and I wound up with a broken radius, surgery, and a minimum of 3 months rehab. That said, the worst thing is that I have lost all my picture files - including the pic of Harm in his summer whites leaning on the white ship railing. I had that as my desktop background. I have been unable to find a copy online that is large enough to actually see it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm reading some JAG stories and those pesky foreign-type characters are all through it. I remember a few years ago someone mentioned how to get rid of them, but I can't remember how. Can anyone help?

    - Netbooks are good if not trying to do more than one thing at a time. They are not fast machines, just small and portable. Screen is about 10.1" depending on what get and does not rotate. Really couldn't hold in hand like an ereader so not sure it would work for that. Just to surf and write wouldn't be bad but after while the small screen gets annoying to me. - I have a HP netbook which I got through verizon Wireless. I love it. It does so much for me. The only drawback is that it doesn't have a cd drive and the flashdrive that I have for my laptop does not recognize my lap top anymore. that makes it hard to transfer anything from my laptop to my netbook. Mainly advise as to how they handle so I can decide if I want to get one. I read all the time, before I go bed, outside while sitting in the sun, in addition to just plain inside on the sofa. I own books, have given plenty away because there's only so much room to store them. Mostly now it's checking books out from the library. Are e-readers all there are cracked up to be? Or would I be better off sticking with the Library?

Technology at home is minimal, two computers (over 5 years old), a plain, no frills cell phone, no laptop, no Blackberry, however I do have wireless internet.

My daughter (she's 32 and a techno geek) has a Nook and loves it but then she says she doesn't like holding a book and turning the pages. (Go figure but I guess if she's reading I shouldn't complain)

So I guess my question is do you have an e-reader, or know someone that has one and how do you, they like it? Would you recommend one to your friends? And if so what features are worth it and what features aren't.

- anyone who owns one usually loves it no matter what the brand - but if you want to borrow books from the library to read on your ereader then you'll have to go with the Nook - The kindle doesn't allow to borrow or lend. - I have the newest generation Kindle and love it. The deciding factor for me was the cost of a book and to me Amazon has the best prices. Also I have found apps for the PC that let me take fanfic and make into e-reader format so can read fanfic on it. You can share between other Kindle owners. Depends on what want color or basically black and white screen, how many books can it hold, cost, how much do books cost. You might visit some stores and see them in action. - I have a Kobo and it's really easy to read. I bought it in August, but swapped it for the wireless version which came out just after my purchase. It comes with 100 free classics already loaded. I recently purchased a DVD - The Stranger I Married. It came from Australia. The message WRONG REGION came up when i tried to watch it. Does anyone know what i can do to watch this DVD?

- Have you looked in the notice, if it said if you can dezone your DVD player ? If no, the only solution, like we will have to do at home is to buy another DVD player. Sorry. - You have more of a problem than just the region. Australia uses the PAL format, Region 4, where the U.S. is NTSC format, Region 1. Most players sold in the U.S. will not play the PAL format. You should be able to play it on your computer. You need to be careful buying from other countries due to the format and region differences. For instance Europe is also the PAL format, but Region 2. Hello everyone,

Hmm, more specifically since months the problem is that everyday I've to go in the calendar and in the time clock, where I've to correct the date and the hour.
And most of the time at a given moment the clock stops and I've to go back in the clock/date programm to put it back to normal.

I have the laptop since, well, since a few years, is - it the reason ?

I went at the shop to see the ( nice ) guy who is always here to help me, the laptop isn't anymore under guarantee, but for this kind of things it's free, I think to remember that he told me he changed something about the battery or other stuff ( well you know I'm not a computer geek ), but the prob continues.

Do have - I to change the laptop ?

- Whats a few years?... 2 or over 5: if its just two years or less old then NO thats not the problem. You could try these ideas: 1) Have you open up the actual program ( it will be on Hard Drive under computer) see what year is set its set on. Also check if your daylight saving time is on or off. Both of those things can throw off your clock and calendar. 2) Run your anti-virus your system could be under attack with either a virus or worm. after it runs and cleans your programs re-boot your laptop. if that doesn't work. 3) go under computer programs and UNSTALL your clock and calendar and wipe it from your HARD DRIVE ( make sure you are just wiping your clock and calendar) and then re-stall your clock. - Depending on which browser you use, you can check options and see what cookies you have. Virtually every website writes a cookie. You can make it so you only get cookies from sites you actually went to as opposed to third party ones. With Firefox, it's under Tools/Options/Privacy. I need some advise on purchasing a laptop. I want something for surfing the internet, writing and possibly watching DVD's. Have eliminated netbooks, too small. Don't want anything as large at a 17" screen, have a work one and it's not 'lap' friendly. - We have had a history of good luck with Dells (we have 3). You can usually get good deals on refurbs throught the Dell website. HPs used to be bad, but DH says they have gotten better. - I'm a CP person, with 2 desktops in use. However, 3 yrs ago, I got a Macbook weighing just over 5 lbs. The learning curve on the Mac is short, and the product is lovely to look at. I've found it very convenient to take to the library or coffee shop to work on or off line. It's no heavier than a book, and I really like using it. Judi was so jealous, she got one too! - I highly recommend Toshiba. I just bought my 3rd one the end of October and love it. - I've got a 17" Macbook Pro and LOVE IT!!! I've always been a Mac fan, as has most of my family members. We have Mac books ranging form the smallest to largest (17"). Before you R/O the 17" screen, I'd do a bit more research. I love my 17" screen. There's absolutely no problem with it sitting on lap, and I frequently have multiple windows opened at one time. I also love that I can have multiple word documents open at 1 time, side-by-side. I don't have to click from one document to the next like you would on a smaller screen. Hello everyone,

I don't know if you remember a post I send here in which I was telling that I was in need in some help to choose an all in one. You advised an HP, unfortunately I bought an Epson ( it was at a cheap price ), who no long after I bought it caused me many problems and still.

Having enought of enought of it I think I might change it for an HP. Since several months I surf on HP's website and I think that I finally have founded an all in one that can suits to my need and my computer level. ( You all know that I'm not a computer geek )
I'm speaking about the HP Photosmart Premium.

Need your opinion.

I don't know other search website and so I use the most well known Google. Even in my mother - tongue.I use 95% of the time in english version.

A few months ago, I wanted to use the google.com, when this one re-directed me on the google in my mother - tongue, it happend several times until I had the idea to use google.ca. But today, * again * it's re-biginning.I'm given the version in my mother - tongue.

Is - there someone who could explain me , why this kind of thing happens, and if you have an idea what can - I do to overcome this thing ?

I am trying to type some work sheets in math, and I can only find the print version of 4, the standard one (like here) with the closed top. Is there any way I can get one of the manuscript sort of 4s, with the open box top? I'm hoping someone here can help. When you open up a webpage, instead of it completely filling the monitor screen, it only open up about 1/4 the size of the monitor.     - Every version of IE up to now had the same fields. Possibliy vista has changed this. I am running IE8 on windows xp and when I right click on the blue e icon whether it be on the desktop or the quicklaunch bar and go to properties, I find a drop down arrow that allows me to choose "maximized". After three years of dial up aol i purchased hughesnet highspeed. have figured most out except i can not get registered at Outlook Express. My HP printer uses either aol or OE. i no longer have aol. i have contacted aol, HP and OE and received ages of instructions. Am down to a page with three boxes. Top is POP3, i think what wouldi put in bottom box. it has SMTP which is not correct. We just got the copy of my daughters DVD and I need to know how to download it onto my computer. I have windows media player and windows movie maker. I cant figure it out. When I put the DVD in it begins to play in windows media but I cant figure out how to make it download.
It isnt copyright protecte and the director said it would be okay to add it to her portfolio but I can tsend it to her agnet if I cant figure out how to download it.
It is only 6 minutes long...her part anyway.

My family is having a family reunion this August. While I do have a lot of family in Pittsburgh, there is a large amount of cousins, aunts and uncles who live out of state.

The reunion will be at my house, since I live in the family homestead. To try to get all of the information about the reunion out there, we would like to have a web site, but I don't have a clue about doing it! I checked with my internet supplier and the tech support person told me that even though he works for this company, he would not use the web hosting program for himself.

I do have a Facebook group for our family, but not everyone is on Facebook!

So, does anyone have any idea of how we can go about it?
I really would appreciate any help.

I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but if it isn't, maybe someone can direct me elsewhere. Has anyone out there used any program--software, or on line--for sorting and storing genealogical info, including pictures? I know there used to be programs you could buy, and I also know there are websites on the topic. I am mainly looking for organization and storage right now, rather than searching, but that could change if I can get things sorted out. We are getting a new computer, courtesy of our daughter (as a birthday present), and it will be a Dell, so we can order what we want or need on it. Is there anything different it should have for stuff like this? More memory, a different kind of anything? You can see that I don't know a whole lot about computers, although I've learned enough to deal with them fairly well at work. Any suggestions from anyone would be most welcome!

Hi all. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good web browser? I used IE my entire life until they recently had that security problem. I decided to try Safari, which I liked immensely, however it freezes out ALL THE TIME on Facebook for some reason. Don't know if it's because it's an Apple product and I'm using Windows XP on a PC, but anyway, I've become frustrated with it and want to change. I just don't want to bother trying to find a new browser, and build up new bookmarks again, only to have that one not work for me either. So, does anyone have a browser they're really happy with?

And while we're on the subject, is there a way to take bookmarks from one browser and move them into another? TIA!

- chiming in late but I use firefox too - for several reasons - I don't get the constant flow of pop ups that appear on Explorer. I don't have most of the crashes and freezes. There are a few disadvantages - some sites don't have all their features programmed to work with firefox - so when I use my email for instance, on Mozilla I can't use special features like bold, colored font etc because the idiots at Juno only have it programmed for Explorer - rather short sighted of them if you ask me. This may sound dumb, but does anyone have any idea why when people try to save a file on Microsoft Works as a Works file on my computer, it saves it as a Word file - which then can't be read. I just got a new computer (we're leasing it from Rent A Center, actually) and it's got Vista 64 on it. I'm just about used to it - except that the web design software that I've used almost since I first starting MAKING pages won't work on the darn thing. Yeah, I know that PageMill 3.0 is old, and that Adobe doens't make or support it anymore, but it worked for me.

Now, without a program that will edit frames and is WYSIWYG, I'm unable to edit some of my sites.

Does anyone have any ideas for something I can use that will work on this beast --- and won't cost me an arm and a leg and my firstborn child?

HELP!

- The motherboard is like the brains of the computer. Although, you could argue that the processor is the brain. The hard drive is just where stuff is stored. Everything (hard drive, processor, etc.) is connected to the motherboard. Maybe the motherboard is more like the backbone? I have a question about playing OLD CDs on NEW equipment...

I've got a Steely Dan greatest hits CD with a copyright date of 1985. When I try to listen to it on my computer, it sounds like a scratchy old vinyl record. It didn't used to do that - as I've played it on my computer before - but since we had a new CD/DVD combo player installed, my older CDs all sound really scratchy. They sound fine in the car, or on other CD players.

It was suggested that I try to play it as a DVD, but with the combo drive, it automatically reads it as a CD and uses that laser.

Any suggestions???

    - He doesn't think there is a generational gap. CDs are written in binary code (1s and 0s). It could be that your CD/DVD thing is bad (I've had that problem). Or it could be that it's software is "goofy" (his words). Can you play it using Windows Media Player or Real Player?       - No, it's not my player, JJ. New/recent CD's play just fine. As for software, I've tried it with both WMP and Nero, and both have that "static-y" sound. I have other players (Quicktime, Real1, and the like), but haven't tried them. If you were to HEAR it, you could tell that it was "digitizing" or "skipping" something. But when I rip it and replay it from the file, it sounds fine because it's been converted to a .wav or whatever. The Laser MUST be reading all the info, but the playback misses teeny bits. - I buy books and then don't look at them. I do however go to web sites. I've put a few inside. Keep in mind that Vista will make your computer slower since it takes up so much memory to run. Hey everyone I could use your help. I want to buy a laptop but I have no idea how this whole wi-fi thing works. Right now I own a PC and use cable connection for the internet access. Do I pay a monthly fee for wi-fi too? Is that connected to my local cable company?

I guess I'm looking for general "How does wi-fi work and who do I pay" info, lol. Thank you!!!

- You just buy a wireless router from Future Shop, Best Buys, etc., plug it in, and then you can use your computers and wireless printers, tivo, etc. from anywhere in the house. At least, that is what I do with cable. If you take your laptop outside the house, you can access the internet from wi-fi free cafes, libraries, offices, etc., but you shouldn't steal wi-fi from your neighbours. - Just make sure when setup the wireless router that you password protect it or someone could steal your bandwidth. Also if your laptop has a built in wireless card need to know if G or N. N is the newest format and is faster then G. Not all cards support the N format it so if card in laptop doesn't support it but buy a router that does and it isn't backward compatible won't work or if does work won't be as fast.   - If your internet access comes from the cable company, your wireless access should be included. I'm a Mac computer person, and all Macs come with wireless capabilities included through an internal airport. I don't have to do anything but turn on my computer, and assure I have a wireless signal. When I've upload photos previously, Cece has been kind enough to do it for me. Since I don't want to continue to impose, I'm wondering what the options are for uploading & posting photos? Are there specific sites that folks like? Are the photos secure, or can anyone copy them after they've been uploaded? Are there size requirements for the various photo sites? And remember, I'm a Mac person...that's the computer not the character, LOL!

I have these fantastic photos from my garden. They are all "up close" nature shots, some with butterflies, bees, etc. The resolution is amazing! You can see the "fur" on the bee, and even see the wings buzzing. The floral shots are beautiful. Since we discussed garden, I thought folks might be interested, but I don't know how to post them.

- I have an account with a web host (brinkster), that I pay for. I can upload photos and can post them on the HB or other web sites. I host the HBX archives, two personal web sites, and sites for a couple of friends on the same Brinkster account. However, you may not need that kind of thing. I am running Vista on my new lap top. I haven't had too much trouble with it and I am getting used to it, but I have Windows Photo Gallery on it and I hate it! I hate it with a passion! It keeps my pictures so disorganized its own "organized" way. I can't seem to find anything I download from my camera or anything that I scan.

Right now, I am in the process of scanning a lot of old pictures for family that is coming in for my son's wedding. I also want to give him the pictures also. My husband and the father of the bride are putting together a power point show of Chris and Ashley for the wedding, so between those two things, I really need my pictures organized, not the jumbled mess they are now.

My question is this: Is there some way to go back to the way XP used to organize pictures, that is in separate folders, not cross references and in many different folders? I just want to be able to go into my pictures file and then into a folder marked "July2008" or "Chris and Ashley." Is that too hard to ask? Is there some way to delete Windows Photo Gallery and go back to the old way?

- Have you tried Google's photo application, Picasa? You can get a free download. I haven't updated Picasa, but judi has, and is able to put her photos in an online album. Every damned time I try to make a video, or watch a movie, or something that has to do with video of some kind on my computer, I get this bright blue screen that pops up saying that it's dumping physical memory and a bunch of other numbers and gibberish (to me) basically saying that my computer has crashed. Anyone know what's going on? I have about 5 videos I want to do and haven't been able to.

Getting XP legitimate? -- CB, 12:34:08 06/17/08 Tue [3]

I have a new (second hand) computer since a year and got it with a company win XP on it. But, since I am not in the company, after the first update, I got the notice that I did not have a legitimate XP.

So, I got my hands on a download for Win XP and a SP3, with serial code.
I just ran it (setup version..not a complete boot...as to save my own files) and darn it, I again get the notice that it is not a legitimate software (I did use the product key that came with it).

Do I need to format my C drive and run it from the boot up or is there another way, or will that even work?

It is very annoying to keep getting this notice since 1) I can't update my windows,
2) can't run Media Player
3) can't run my photoshop program
and all the other things that have to work with a valid XP, won't work.

Help?
