Subject: TV theme songs

the other day a friend and I were singing the theme song from the patty duke show to each other on facebook

at more than one party someone has been known to sing all the words to Gilligans Island or the brady bunch - and even both versions of the partridge family. (though most folks are sktechy on season one version)

I vaguely remember loving a show as a small child with imogene cocoa in it about cavemen and they lyrics were something like - its about time its about blank it's the craziest place in space.

I honestly don't know of any tv shows in the last few decades -other than the big bang - that still have lyrics to their theme songs

do you think we'd remember more shows if they had songs we could link them too?

[> I agree. We know the lyrics to All In the Family, Family Ties, WKRP in Cincinattie, the Mary Tyler Moore show, and the Nanny for example. But even a distinctive theme tune works like the one on Barney Millar. Click here for It's About Time It was only on for 1 season, so I didn't get to see it. -- Cece, 14:12:18 03/11/14 Tue [1]

[> [> Yes, I can think of a ton of them that had great melodies even without lyrics: Perry Mason, Simon and Simon, Chips, Remington Steele, Scarecrow and Mrs King, just to name a few. Those great themes are a big contrast to the boring insturmentals we get today: Bones, NCIS, Chuck all have longer opening credits with recognizable songs, but you just don't go around humming those songs in your head! lol -- JJ Ronda, 06:22:08 03/12/14 Wed [1]

[> [> Oh, I loved WKRP. And I still can sing all the theme words. "Baby, if you've ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me, I'm living on the air in Cincinnati, Cincinnati WKRP." Better stop now and get to work. -- Araninda, 12:24:46 03/13/14 Thu [1]

[> The Beverly Hillbillilies is being aired here in the UK. This show is hilarious. They don't play the theme song, which I knew all the words from and still know, but instead play the incredible music of Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, which is fine with me. The writing of this show was amazing! -- mj, 14:45:31 03/11/14 Tue [1]

[> [> Black gold - Texas tea- LOL - yep - I remember those words too - which now reminds me of Green Acres is the place to be alongside of THere's a little hotel called the shady rest at the junction petticoat junction - LOL I could sing all the words- but I'll spare everyone!! -- chris k -, 18:01:17 03/11/14 Tue [1]

[> I think it's sad that no one does theme songs any more. I only watch a few shows, and for the few that DO have a theme song that lasts more than three seconds, it is just an instrumental song without much of a melody. -- JJ Ronda--I miss great theme songs, with or without lyrics., 20:12:49 03/11/14 Tue [1]

[> [> that's what i mean- who remembers anything anymore! - remember golden girls in the 80s - I think they were one of the last shows to do it - but who doesn't remember ... And if you threw a party invited everyone you knew you would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say- thank you for being a friend!!! -- chris k, 21:05:31 03/11/14 Tue [1]

[> And just to add to this thread -- I get goosebumps whenever I hear the instrumental theme music from Inspector Morse. It's so haunting and characteristic of the mood of the show. So, even with no words, the music itself can move us. There's actually a spinoff of Morse, called Lewis, which also has an excellent tune that makes me know it's Lewis. They seem to be bigger on instrumental identifiers here (and in Europe -- for example 'Poirot'). -- mj, 06:27:20 03/12/14 Wed [1]

[> [> I think lyrics were more common for the sit coms- and I keep thinking Golden Girls was one of the last ones to do it- Even though some never did - like Andy Griffith or Dick Van Dyke and yet those tunes were memorably recognizable as well. -- chris k, 09:55:52 03/13/14 Thu [1]

[> [> [> The Nanny had greaet lyrics and it started the year after Golden Girls ended. Actually, The Nanny is the most recent show I can think of with a theme song that told about the show. It ran from 93-99. Can anyone think of one more recent? -- JJ Ronda, 18:53:00 03/13/14 Thu [1]

[> The Patty Duke Show (ok, yes, I'm old!). When I was a kid I'd run around singing "but they're cousins, identical cousins all the way." Also "One Day at a Time" had great lyrics. . ."this is it, this is life, the one you get so go and have a ball." The lyrics ended with "we'll take it as it comes one day at a time." In more recent times, "The Golden Girls" theme "thank you for being a friend" was memorable. -- Araninda, 22:36:25 03/12/14 Wed [1]

[> Does anyone remember the show 'My Three Sons' with Fred McMurray? I always loved him so much! He was such a great Dad. I often wonder whatever happened to the kids that played the sons. It also had a familiar theme tune and a big dog named Champ. -- mj, 05:02:19 03/15/14 Sat [1]

[> [> Speaking of three kids and a Dad, DJE is busy filming this pilot for Fox which is now called 'No Place Like Home'. It sounds like his character won't be a gentle giant like Fred McMurray, though. He has been described as a 'ruggedly handsome, no-nonsense man's man'. Anyhoo, time will tell. And let's not forget "Welcome Back" from "Welcome Back Kotter" (another radio hit).. -- The Chief (love reminiscing like this!)
