Subject: Does anyone watch Glee or Smash?

I only started watching Glee this season. I know it's for kids, but I am really enjoying some of the shows they put on. I know they are lip syncing, but they are really talented singers. The stories are okay, and I think they are good for young people, with messages about tolerance and anti-bullying for example.

On the other hand, Smash is for adults. I'm loving it. It's so interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes of a Broadway show. I also like the characters. They are interesting and varied. Katherine McPhee and Megan Hilty have wonderful voices, and I'm really enjoying the original music. Anyone else out there equally enthused?

[> I watch both shows. I'm a sucker for all the singing and dancing. You really should go back and watch the first two seasons of Glee. Some of the best episodes were in those seasons, not to mention some of the best song and dance numbers. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 06:49:54 04/25/12 Wed [1]

[> [> I might have known JJ would be watching....LOL. I, too, am a sucker for musicals. I'll watch out for Glee reruns. I think that Amber Riley's version of I will always love you was fabulous. It was better imo than Jennifer Hudson's version at the Emmys, though to be fair, JH was live and AR was recorded. -- Cece, 10:48:41 04/25/12 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> True, I think JH had just one day's notice. And I know from experience that it is VERY hard to sing when you're crying. I have that problem frequently in church choir when we do emotional songs--especially if there is a drama team performing at the same time. Then I again I cry easily... -- JJ (Ronda), 19:44:15 04/25/12 Wed [1]

[> I watch both given that Cynthia is an avid musician it's a must! I love them! They lift me without it being slap stick humor. -- Theresa, 14:04:56 04/25/12 Wed [1]

[> You can tell that McPhee and Hilty have trained voices. A lot of the Idol belters really could use some training. They often over warble, screetch, and use melisma. They are only young, but if they want to make music their career, they should get help before they wreck their voices. I'm generalizing of course. -- Cece, 16:22:34 04/25/12 Wed [1]

[> [> Yes, you're generalizing, but you are soooo right! That's why I don't watch Idol, Voice, or any of those types of shows. I am very picky about music and I have no tolerance for sub par performances, and there are just too many of them on those shows for me to spend my valuable time on them. I know that's extremely harsh and judgemental from someone who is NOT a professional, but that's just the way it is. -- JJ (Ronda) - Makes my life easier anyway to just stick with my four scripted shows. [> [> [> I do watch, because there are sometimes some really good voices. Katherine McPhee was one of them back in S5. Her mother is a vocal coach. There is a 16 yr old contestant on now (Jessica Sanchez), with a lovely voice, though she is not my fave. I know different types of singing require specific vocal requirements, but all singers should take care of their vocal chords, or they'll be toast (inside). -- Cece, 18:40:10 04/26/12 Thu [1]

Of course, there have been certain singers whose terrible voices were part of their charm and appeal. e.g. Louis Armstrong, whose trumpet playing was sublime, but whose vocal abilities were non-existant. But when he sang with Ella, whose voice, imo was fab-u-lous, the collaboration really worked.

[> [> [> [> Oh, I know there have been some great singers on Idol, but the way I see it, if they're really good (like Katherine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkston, etc), I'll be hearing them later anyway. I'm just not into competitions in that format. I don't watch reality shows either (can't stand them!) -- JJ (Ronda)--and yes, Ella was fabulous!, 18:48:26 04/26/12 Thu [1]

[> I watch both shows. I love Smash since it's still in the new what's going to happen phase and I've been a fan of Katharine McPhee's since Am I days. I'm a little tired of Glee, but still watch and really enjoy the occasional song. I think they lost the story line along the way and that hurt the show. -- manette, 16:11:17 04/28/12 Sat [1]
