Subject: What Did You Want to Be?

We all know that the backstory of JAG was Harm following in his father's footsteps and realizing his childhood dream of becoming a Naval aviator.

When you were a child, or even a teenager, what did you want to be when you grew into adulthood? What occupation did you want to have? Where did you want to live? Did you realize your childhood dreams?

[> Oh wow, what a loaded question....I was never someone who always knew what she wanted. As a child I wanted to be just about everything under the sun, later on I wanted to be an interpreter, then a diplomat (I thought languages were fun and working somewhere abroad especially), then I wanted to be an actress, but was too chicken to actually audition for drama school, I wanted to join the federal police (my eyesight is too poor) and lastly wanted to become a forensic pathologist..inside.. -- Jam, 02:47:04 03/15/11 Tue [1]

so I studied medicine, but in the course of it decided I did not want to do 8 autopsies a day (and write the reports about it!!!), so I first did some internal medicine and am now doing my "residency" in virology/microbiology. Life is good....I´d still like to work someplace other than Germany at least for a time, so when I´m a fully certified virologist, I might look into that. Anyone know of open positions in Australia/New Zealand/Canada or somewhere in Scandinavia??? ;-)

[> I'm really enjoying selling real estate now - probably should have stuck with it fifteen years ago when I first got the idea- but in answer to your question - I always wanted to be a lawyer by the time I finished college the last thing I wanted to see was another class room or another test or paper or anything else - so I discarded the idea of being a lawyer - probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life - No idea where I'd be today- might still be living in cold NY but I should have gone to law school - -- chris k, 06:30:01 03/15/11 Tue [1]

[> I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, but I was always good in science and liked it better than reading, etc. I went to a community college to be a medical assistant, did that for about 5 years, got married and decided I wanted to be a nurse. I liked OB before I went to school and decided to go into obstetrics even before I started nursing school. After all these years, I should have been a teacher! No holidays, weekends, or off shifts. Missed so much with my kids -- Martian Barb, 08:12:27 03/15/11 Tue [1]

[> I wanted to grow up to be a beautiful princess and live in a castle. Well, I married my 'prince' after kissing alot of toads, so I guess I did good. LOL! I also had a wedding reception in a castle in The Netherlands, which was really cool. What's VERY strange in my life is that when I was little, I ALWAYS used to sing 'I'm a liitle Dutch girl' song, to the point where I drove my Italian family crazy!! Guess what -- I married a Dutchman and have lived in Holland for most of my recent years! -- mj, 11:49:39 03/15/11 Tue [1]

[> When I was in high school, I thought I wanted to be a Hollywood costume designer. I wanted to work with George Lucas on the Star Wars movies! LOL My first college major was "Fashion Design". Didn't like sitting at the sewing machine THAT much! LOL Switched to Elem. Ed. Liked it until I got to student teaching and realized my mistake! I should have gone to Law School - I'd have been a good lawyer. [> Well, I wanted to be a lot of things. At one point, I told everyone I wanted to be either an architect or a beautician. LOL Who decides between THOSE two careers?! Haha! And like so many girls, I wanted to be a teacher at some point. Inside for more. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 08:08:38 03/19/11 Sat [1]

As I got older, and got more involved with music, I wanted to play in the Boston Pops orchestra. And I also wanted to be a studio singer, no a recording artist, but a studio singer--the ones that sing background vocals on everyone's albums. I wanted to sing but didn't want the travel or the attention and didn't want to be stuck singing the same stuff all the time like the poor artists that have to sing their signature song over and over at every single concert for years and years. Ugh!

I ended up being an accountant and I sing in the church choir. And I did eventually get some studio session recording experience for various church and church related projects, both instrumental and vocal, so I can at least say I've done that. lol

[> I wanted to be a ballerina. (Jenks stop laughing.) After 9 yrs of lessons I stopped. I was good, but not good enough to make a career out of it. Then I got into sports and was going to be a PE teacher, but life took a left turn. I got married and went into retailing. Many Regrets. Old too soon. [> I wanted to be a nurse, I was positive that that's what I was going to do, until my mid twenties. Just before I applied for nursing school, I started to wonder if nursing was really for me, then I decided to become a Medical Assistant, I thought if I could handle that I could handle anything. My first job was for a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. He was part of a group practice that also had a PT group in the same building, as part of the group. The more I saw of the one on one patient care, and the positive aspect of the field itself, I was hooked.....Inside -- mkim, 14:19:26 03/21/11 Mon [1]

It took another 10 years but I finally finished college and began my work, and I loved it. One of the other things that drew me in was the hours, I knew that if I got my nursing degree, I would really have no say in the hours I worked, at least in a hospital.Job's in a doctors office were hard to find. Most hired Medical Assistants or LPN's. With a husband at sea and two children, I had to know I would be there for them

[> As a child I wanted to be a nurse, but that changed with the realities of high school biology! Then I had this dream that I was going to work in politics & change the world. I should have been a lawyer or a teacher & I regret that. I wanted to make lots of money. . . .Inside for what I stumbled into. . . . -- Araninda, 08:24:33 03/24/11 Thu [1]

After bouncing around in government work, about 15 years ago I ended up as a consultant and administrator in the nonprofit world, which is where I am today. It is the right fit for me and sort of blends all of the occupations that I once considered. I get to take care of organizations and heal them, rather than patients. I get involved in the legal aspects of running the organization. I teach and supervise employees and volunteers. I interact and lobby with governmental entities and state political figures, so I try to get them to change my little corner of the world. And I conduct fundraising, so I am making lots of money -- just not for me personally!

Life takes funny twists and turns, but I believe that we are ultimately led in the direction we should go.
