Subject: The Coroner's Department

For Your Information

I have read, read, and reread all of the comments on here as well as listened to all of the debates with regard to the election of a new Dearborn County Coroner. It seems as though there are alot of unknowns with this department. I have made it my mission to educate myself to the best of my ability as to how this department works so as to make the most informed decision I can come Election Day. I would like to share the information with the readers of this forum as well to hopefully help in their decision.

The best analogy I can give is the Coroner is to the Coroner's Dept. like the Sheriff is to the Sheriff's Dept. I know this may not be the best comparison, however it's the closest I could come up with. The Coroner's Department is made up of the Coroner, Chief Deputy Coroner (whom both earn a straight salary), and a team of Deputy Coroner's whose pay is based on per run. Currently, from what I've been told there is 1 Chief Deputy Coroner and approximately 7 Deputy Coroner's 4 of which actively make quite a bit of runs. Yes, the Coroner does respond to calls however not all the time. This is when his and/or her team of qualified deputies come into play and take calls. I can not say with any amount of certainty of the plans with which Tracy Cochran or Joe Ridgeway have on keeping the current deputies in place, I do know that Steve Callahan has stated that he plans to keep at least 3 of the current (maybe more) deputies on staff if he is elected one of which will be appointed his chief deputy. Whose role is by the way to step in, in times of absence of the Coroner. As I've stated I've heard many of the comments and debates made by the candidates and so far the best response I heard was when the question was asked of the candidates what they would do in the instance of a mass casualty involving an airplane. The only one who gave a resons which made any sense was Steve Callahan. Tracy and Joe were talking about triaging and getting all that set up. Steve actally talked about enlisting the help of other department's and tending to the investigation of the deceased. It's Fire and EMS's job to worry about triaging and tending to the injured not the Coroner's. We need to make sure that whomever we elect in this position has a competent team in place, as it's just not the elected Coroner going to be making some of the calls, and as I stated the only one I know of who has stated he intends on keeping those seasoned Deputy Coroner's on board is Steve Callahan. I have no affiliation with any of the candidates just making my own observations.
