Sensitive Palin ethics report kept secret, for now

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sworn to secrecy, Alaska lawmakers have begun reviewing a lengthy and politically sensitive investigative report that, when released Friday, could prove embarrassing to Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
The report focuses on whether the first-term Alaska governor abused her authority by firing a state commissioner to settle a family dispute. But it is also expected to touch on whether Palin's husband meddled in state affairs and whether her administration inappropriately accessed employee medical records.
The inquiry, approved by a legislative committee's bipartisan vote, began before Republican presidential nominee John McCain named Palin his running mate. Since then, the case has been dogged by accusations of political influence.
The investigation focuses on her firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan. Monegan says Palin and her husband pressured him to fire Mike Wooten, a state trooper involved in a nasty divorce and custody dispute with the governor's sister. When Monegan resisted, he says, he was fired.
Palin's critics say that shows she used her office to settle family affairs.
"When you're the governor, you leave your household hat at home and you become governor," said state Senate President Lyda Green, a Republican who has frequently clashed with Palin.
At their meeting Friday, lawmakers planned to vote to release the estimated 300-page report and some of the 1,000 or more pages of supporting documents. The 14-member legislative panel could recommend that the case be closed, that another committee continue to investigate, or that the matter be referred to criminal investigators.
In an effort to head off the report, McCain campaign spokesman Taylor Griffin released the campaign's own version of events. That report, which Griffin said was written by campaign staffers, says the Legislature has taken a legitimate policy dispute between a governor and one of her commissioners, and portrayed it as something inappropriate.
"The following document will prove Walt Monegan's dismissal was a result of his insubordination and budgetary clashes with Governor Palin and her administration," campaign officials wrote. "Trooper Wooten is a separate issue."
Monegan had not seen the closely held report Thursday night and said he did not know what to expect.
"I just hope that the truth is figured out," Monegan said in a telephone interview Thursday. "That the governor did want me to fire him, and I chose to not. You just can't walk up to someone and say, 'I fire you.' He didn't do anything under my watch to result in termination."
The report is also expected to focus on Palin's husband, Todd, who had extraordinary access to the governor's office and her top aides. Todd acknowledges calling and meeting over the course of many months with numerous senior government officials about Wooten, whom he described as a dangerous and unstable man who had threatened his family.
One of those meetings, Monegan said, occurred in the governor's office. Green said that raised questions of impropriety and that, ultimately, the governor is responsible.
"He shouldn't be sitting in the governor's office and making phone calls if he's going to be pushing his agenda," she said. "Everything's on her."
Steve Branchflower, a retired prosecutor hired by the Legislature, is also investigating whether anyone in the Palin administration pressured auditors to deny Wooten's disability claim. He had claimed he hurt his back moving a body bag, but Todd Palin later said he documented and took photos of Wooten riding a snowmobile that cast suspicion on his injury.
Republican state Rep. John Coghill, a member of the committee, said he would try to keep the discussion focused on the what legislators set out to investigate: Monegan's firing.
"It wasn't supposed to look into the whole administration team. It was supposed to look at the governor," he said before reading the report. "This is about the integrity of the legislative process."
Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said he had not received a copy of the report. Over the past few days, Van Flein has released affidavits and other documents that Palin's husband and aides provided to investigators. That rankled some lawmakers but Van Flein said he wanted to make sure Branchflower's report didn't take anything out of context.
"Whenever anyone writes their own report, they're filtering their data. And if you've already drawn your conclusion, you tend to filter it in a way to support that conclusion," he said.
Palin's allies have accused the committee of having already drawn their conclusion. They cited comments by Democratic state Sen. Hollis French, who said the investigation could provide an "October surprise" for McCain.

Subject: Sarah Palin's Anti-Semitic Preacher

This is Sarah Palin's Reverand Wright moment: she sat in church two weeks ago while her preacher, Larry Kroon, invited a guest - David Brickner, the founder of Jews for Jesus - to spew anti-semitic hatred.

Here's what Brickner said:

Brickner also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity.

"Judgment is very real and we see it played out on the pages of the newspapers and on the television. It's very real. When [Brickner's son] was in Jerusalem he was there to witness some of that judgment, some of that conflict, when a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment — you can't miss it."

Will she disown Brickner? And what about Kroon? Read the entire thing here.

And since we're in the mood to talk about "over scrutinizing" Sarah, let's compare Palin's situation with Brickner to Obama and Reverend Wright. Israel Matzav writes that he finds the Wright situation more offensive to Jews.

Really?

The case with Wright: he was friends with Louis Farakan, who it is fair to say has views about as anti-semitic as Brickner.

But Farakan never spoke to Obama's church while Obama was there. He certainly didn't do it two weeks before he received the nomination. And Wright didn't take up a collection plate for Farakan.

So let's review. Palin's situation would be equivalent to Obama's if:

Two weeks before Obama received the nomination, he sat in church with Reverend Wright while Wright invited Farakan to give anti-Jewish rants. And this was not the first but the SECOND time Obama had attended a Farakan sermon. And after the sermon, Wright had sent around a collection for Farakan.

That's essentially what Palin did with Brickner. Two weeks ago. At least from the Jewish perspective, SHOULDN'T THIS BE BIGGER NEWS THAN REVEREND WRIGHT?

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on the left wing group, Acorns voter fraud incident. This group is a very radical left wing liberal group that supports Obama. The incident I am spesking of is the voter fraude they just got caught commiting. What they did is they gathered up thousands of Obama supporters and helped them register to vote multiple times. Some registered up to 90 times under different dates of birth and addresses. Some of these people admitted to filling out so many forms they could not remeber how many they filled out. One man claimed he was payed in cash and in ciggerets. The charge claims that they produced over one million registrations by doing this. It was averaged that if this was not caught by the authorities it would have continued on producing more false votes for obama and other political figures the group backs.

On the other hand I would also like to here peoples thoughts on the way we vote in this state. When I go to vote nobody asks me for I.D. They just ask my name and address, find it, draw a line threw my name on the list and hand me a ballot. Just think ,I could find a person who has passed away recently and vote as him if I wanted. Some inmates family member can vote as him if he registered before getting locked up. I could vote as a person who is sick in the hospital. All I need is thier name and address and the place they vote and I could vote up to five times for the candidate I'm backing no problem. I think this already goes on I just wish there was a way to have them tighten up at the polls.

Lets vote yes on 1! Our jobs are set in stone as unit 4 and we have one of the best funded retirement systems in the USA.
O.K. the shit would hit the fan but just like work get out the bio-kit and a little bleach your good to go.

Who would take the hit? All those mangers we know we don't need.

Most likely you'ld get paid something $, food, gas until things get worked out. Just like Gov. Weld did to us a long time ago. You could get a letter from work getting you out of paying your bills until the State paid you.

Oh yes and the early retirement deals would cut our dead wood and the OT would make those who stay RICH.

or

I could be wrong.

Sen. Barack Obama with Raila Odinga Corsi was set to show Obama and Odinga have been in direct contact since the senator's visit to Kenya in 2006. He was to claim Obama advised Odinga on campaign strategy and helped him raise money in the U.S. for the Kenya presidential campaign. Corsi was to report Odinga's 2007 presidential campaign strategy called for exploiting anti-Kikuyu tribal sentiments, claiming victory and charging voter fraud even if the campaign knew the election had been legitimately lost. Odinga, Corsi said, also was willing to fan the flames of ethnic tribal tensions and use violence as a last resort by calling for mass action that led to the destruction of properties, injuries, loss of life and the displacement of over 500,000 Kenyans. The purpose was to compel the Electoral Commission of Kenya to declare him the winner or enable him to declare himself the winner by force. Even though Odinga has not fulfilled his campaign promises to the Muslims who voted for him, he continues to cause concern among Kenyans because he has not declared his position on Shariah law, Corsi said. Corsi said Obama remained in active phone contact with Odinga through the New Hampshire Democratic Party primary in January. The Illinois senator continued to support Odinga, he said, turning a blind eye to an agreement signed with Muslims and the post-election violence instigated as part of the campaign strategy Mark Garnett

John McCain telling the big lie
Editorial / Opinion
Article Launched: 09/18/2008 06:17:34 AM EDT

It's time to tell two truths about Big Lie politics -- and one about the news media, whose job is to make sure that you are not deceived by the lies.
-- Truth One: Big Lie politics is flourishing, yet again, in Campaign 2008. It is being done, of course, because it works: The lies and distortions, once uttered or aired, are repeated; and every time they are recycled some false notions stick in the heads of some of the people. Big Lies have won elections and may do so again.
-- Truth Two: While Democrats and Republicans have both perfected the craft of the Big Lie, the practice has not been fairly balanced in 2008. Most egregious deceits and distortions have come from one side, in messages and ads either made or approved by a man I have long respected for his ethics and (I thought) honesty: John McCain.
-- Truth Three: The Big Lie works mainly because my colleagues in the news media are still not very good at exposing the liars, their lies and their willful, cynical strategies that seek to deceive you before you vote. While political journalists are focusing on fact checking and truth-telling more than ever, they have been working under a misunderstanding of what it means to be fair and balanced.
Journalists operating under the well intentioned premise that to be fair, each report must be balanced by presenting samplings from both sides. Such as lies from the left as well as from the right. But in 2008, Big Lie politics hasn't yet happened that way. No matter.
Often major untruths are paired with minor exaggerations -- and all are covered as fairly and balanced equal offenses. Usually, the reports begin with a sentence that says all sides are making statements that stretch the facts.
No wonder you don't know what is really happening in Campaign 2008.
By far the best job of truth-telling has been done online by the nonpartisan, nonprofit FactCheck.org, which is headed by former Associated Press and CNN reporter Brooks Jackson and is funded by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, of the University of Pennsylvania. As in this: "McCain misrepresents Obama's tax proposals again. And again, and again."
Examples: A McCain ad graphic that reported, falsely, that Obama would "raise taxes on middle class." The truth is that under Obama's plan, more than 90 percent of Americans would get tax cuts; the only increases would be paid by taxpayers with family incomes over $250,000 or individual incomes over $200,000. There was also a Spanish-language McCain radio ad that falsely claimed Obama would raise taxes on "families" earning $42,000.
The Web site contains a long list of McCain ads that made false claims about Obama tax increases. "A continuing pattern of deceit," concluded the FactCheck.org experts concluded.
McCain, who has long championed decent politics and surely knows better, says he approved those ads. He also says he approved the ad that attacked Obama's record on education by making a smarmy claim his team surely knew was blatantly inaccurate.
As pictures of kindergarten-age children and a baffled looking Obama filled the screen, McCain's ad claimed "Obama's one accomplishment" was "legislation to teach 'comprehensive sex education' to kindergarteners." McCain's advisers knew the measure, an Illinois state senate bill that another legislator introduced and which never was enacted, provided that kindergarteners and other young students should only be taught "age-appropriate" information such as how to recognize and avoid inappropriate touching and other abuses.
Like so many examples of Big Lie politics, this ad was put into play on the assumption that the electronic media would give it extensive free airing. And the nonstop cable news networks filled their time by obliging. The Big Lie was repeated, in a distortion compounded by the repeated visual imagery.
"A factual failure," was the conclusion of FactCheck.org about McCain's sleazy sex education claim about Obama. But McCain's media masters might as well have hoisted a banner: "Mission Accomplished."
In his long career, McCain has been on the receiving and giving ends of Big Lie politics. He has felt the lash of it and vowed to rise above it. Having known and respected McCain for years, I find the latest chapter most sad.
I never expected that this respected war hero would have ever countenanced campaign ads that were so contrary to the ideals he revered about America back in his darkest days four decades ago, when his country was but a beacon half a world away.

If the income tax is voted out there will be lay-offs and those people will lose thousands of dollars + there homes and possibly their transportation. The question we must all ask ourselves is, is that worth it? NO!

Poll Shows Obama Came Out Ahead In Debate
OXFORD, Miss. (CBS News) ¯ The first presidential debate helped uncommitted voters learn about the candidates - and it appears that Democrat Barack Obama benefited the most, according to a CBS News/Knowledge Networks poll taken immediately following the debate.

Uncommitted voters said Obama won the debate against Republican John McCain, and more of those voters improved their opinion of the Democrat. But while 66 percent think Obama would make the right decisions about the economy, 56 percent think McCain would do so about Iraq.

Immediately after the debate, CBS News interviewed a nationally representative sample of nearly 500 debate watchers assembled by Knowledge Networks who were "uncommitted voters" - voters who are either undecided about who to vote for or who say they could still change their minds. Thirty-nine percent of these uncommitted debate watchers said Obama won the debate. Twenty-four percent said McCain won, and another 37 percent thought it was a tie.

Nearly half of those uncommitted voters who watched the debate said that their image of Obama changed for the better as a result. Just eight percent say their opinion of Obama got worse, and 46 percent reported no change in their opinions.

McCain saw less improvement in his image. Thirty-two percent have improved their image of McCain as a result of the debate, but 21 percent said their views of him are now worse than before.

Why did voters' image of Obama improve? Many volunteered that they were impressed by his poise and knowledge about the issues, that he was more knowledgeable about the issues than they thought previously. When it came to McCain, those same voters said he "didn't control himself well under pressure," that he was "angry and bad-tempered," and that he "talked too much about the past."

On the other hand, voters who thought McCain won the debate felt he showed more experience and understanding of the issues - particularly foreign policy. Many felt he exceeded their expectations in how he presented himself tonight, saying he was a "better debater" and a "skilled speaker."

Although much of this debate addressed foreign policy issues, the candidates talked about the economy for about 30 minutes - which is after all what voters say is their most important concern. Uncommitted debate watchers saw Obama as the clear winner on handling the economy; 66 percent felt he would make the right decisions about the economy, while 42 percent felt McCain would do so.

But when it came to the war in Iraq, McCain was the stronger candidate. Before the debate, 44 percent said that McCain would make the right decisions about the war; that rose to 56 percent after the debate. Fewer thought Obama would make the right decisions on Iraq.

Both candidates made some gains in presenting their respective visions for the country. Sixty-five percent said that Obama made it clear what he would do as president; 64 percent said that of his rival, McCain.

In national polls of registered voters overall, one of McCain's strengths has been the perception that he is ready for the presidency, while Obama's has been the perception that he is empathetic to voters' needs. Uncommitted voters who watched the debate share those perceptions.

But while eight in 10 uncommitted voters who watched the debate think McCain is prepared to be president, six in 10 now think Obama is prepared as well - a significant improvement from his standing among these same voters before the debate. The percentage of watchers who think Obama understands their needs and problems has also increased by 21 points, while a majority still say McCain does not.

Uncommitted voters include those who say they have a preference, but also say they could still change their minds. Before the debate, 36 percent favored Obama and 34 percent favored McCain. Obama now leads by 12 points among uncommitted debate watchers - 41 percent to 29 percent -- in their choice for president in November. But nearly three in 10 remain undecided, and most of those with a choice now say their minds could still change.

I Don't know Economics: John McCain, Presidential Candidate?

WASHINGTON -- The problem wasn't that John McCain said, "The fundamentals of our economy are strong," as Wall Street was imploding last week.
The problem was that he didn't stand by his own words.
Democrat Barack Obama instantly seized on the quote for a hard-hitting campaign ad. The seven words became Exhibit A in Obama's case that the Republican McCain is wrong and out of touch. But, so what?
If McCain believed what he said, he should have stuck to his position and defended it with some examples. That would have shown real straight talk. He could have claimed the banner of hope and optimism.
Even with economists willing to back him up, though, it wouldn't have been easy. In the continuous news cycle, complicated issues get boiled down to sound bites and slogans.
McCain didn't need to remind people that during the primaries last year he acknowledged that economics isn't his strong suit. By not sticking to his words, McCain left the impression that he didn't know how bad the economic mess is or that he was just blowing political smoke -- or both.
McCain also called for a 9/11-style commission to study what brought on the economic woes and how to prevent another catastrophe. Obama jumped on the idea as typical Washington-speak for not solving problems.
To be sure, the nation's economic picture seems to darken by the day. Joblessness has soared as have mortgage foreclosures. Banks are teetering, the government is in major bailout mode and the

financial markets appear to be in free fall. A Page One headline in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday declared: "Worst Crisis Since '30s, With No End Yet in Sight."
How bad is it? So bad that the White House refused to say the fundamentals are strong. After saying for months that the economy is strong, press secretary Dana Perino wouldn't say it after McCain did, claiming to do so would put the president in the middle of the presidential race.
For his part, the president canceled a trip to help raise money for GOP candidates to stay in the White House and monitor the economic situation. Translation: It would have looked bad for him to be glad-handing fellow Republicans when the financial world was spinning out of control. This is the Katrina lesson applied to the financial hurricane.
At this point in the campaign, McCain obviously didn't want a repeat of the storm that surrounded his former economic adviser, Phil Gramm, when he dismissed people worried about the economy as whiners.
But McCain hadn't insulted voters. Nor had he said the economy was a banana split with a cherry on top.
After noting "tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and on Wall Street," he said, "People are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think still, the fundamentals of our economy are strong. But these are very, very difficult times."
Instead of standing firm, McCain did what Washington politicians do when something they say ricochets around the talk-filled universe. He waffled and then he caved. First, he said he meant to say that American workers are strong. And then he scurried away from his words entirely and declared the economy in "a total crisis."
He also reversed himself on whether taxpayers should bail out the insurance giant AIG, first saying no, then yes. It was like watching him play both sides of the net in a tennis match.
McCain and Obama both say more financial regulation is needed. That's been a consistent position for Obama. McCain is strongly for deregulation unless he's for more regulation.
Interestingly, New York's billionaire Independent mayor, Michael Bloomberg, did stand by McCain's remark.
"America's great strength is its diversity, its hard work, its good financial statements, its broad capital markets, its enormous natural resources," Bloomberg told a news conference Monday, Politico reported.
Bloomberg, who contemplated an independent run for president, hasn't endorsed either Obama or McCain.
The mayor told an audience at Georgetown University on Wednesday that what he looks for in a presidential candidate is intelligence and a pragmatic approach to problems.
He said the public chooses the person they believe is most honest and straightforward. That's hard to measure, Bloomberg said, so people vote their instincts.

A study coming out Tuesday from scholars at Columbia, Harvard, Purdue and Michigan projects that 20 million Americans who have employment-based health insurance would lose it under the McCain plan.

There is nothing secret about Senator McCain’s far-reaching proposals, but they haven’t gotten much attention because the chatter in this campaign has mostly been about nonsense — lipstick, celebrities and “Drill, baby, drill!”

For starters, the McCain health plan would treat employer-paid health benefits as income that employees would have to pay taxes on.

“It means your employer is going to have to make an estimate on how much the employer is paying for health insurance on your behalf, and you are going to have to pay taxes on that money,” said Sherry Glied, an economist who chairs the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health
