The videos were mistakenly played before the competition area of the pageant, in front of the judges, showing Amelia in crown and sash. Numerous other contestants likely also placed on their resumes that they were previous titleholders or contestants, and how well they have done in other competitions. To my knowledge, there are no rules about when videos are played. This appears to me to be grasping at straws for complaints. Playing a farewell video of a contestant that is also an outgoing titleholder before judging is complete would be within the realm of poor taste. As a general rule in pageantry, if you think it might look bad or create drama, just don't do it. There will always be people that complain about things, but this appearance of impropriety could have been avoided with a little common sense. Neither Adrien's, nor Amelia's videos were played prior to judging be completed, but a number of girls could have been in any of those videos. I think what's being taken out of the equation is the integrity of the judges. At this point, they already know each contestant's background and have interviewed the contestants as well. To worry that this one thing will influence the judging in any significant way implies that you can't trust the judges' ability to judge. I don't think the judges' integrity is in question; and the state organization has measures to prevent the local directors from influencing the outcome. Without question, there were examples of poor judgment on Saturday night, but ultimately they were not made by the judges themselves. No one wonders why the numbers are low. The numbers are expected to be low as the program recovers from the abuse of the previous group. Also, no one, least of all the new team, wants a talentless, brainless titleholder, so I'm not sure where that comes from; nor am I clear how the occurrences of last night can be blamed for tarnishing an already obliterated reputation. Undoubtedly, what happened last night was inexcusable and I guarantee Ashley and her group were neither aware, nor approving of it. That said, I'm certain the board felt in the beginning that it was only fair to give some local directors the opportunity to make a fresh start, abide by the rules and show good judgment. I could not agree more. People need to ask themselves if they're in this for the contestants or for themselves. The problems usually arise from the people who have gotten that confused. And most become like family to them. I do believe their heart is in the right place. Unless the State ED knows in advance and the numbers are there, 4 contestants for each Title, you cannot arbitrarily just Give a Title! The reason Amelia is eligible is because Miss Springfield is closed. She only competed for Miss Springfield, and this is because she was ineligible for Miss Central Illinois, as the previous titleholder. She had to relinquish that title in order to compete, which she did. At the local director's meeting, the rules were addressed regarding a titleholder being allowed to compete in the same pageant, but for a different title. It was read straight from the licensing agreement. The Field Directors and the Local Directors know the rules MAO has set forth. Ashley being in the Audience as she was should have handled it. It was just wrong. The Winters knew better.
