Subject: Holy crap, I’m writing a review
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Robert De Niro 12/18/04" on 10:10:09 12/18/04 Sat

Hopefully my reviews will be a little better now that I’m fresh from peer review sessions in a writer’s workshop. Fiction writing, true, but it’s reviewing all the same. I have a playwriting class after winter break, which should be even more useful.

The King of Comedy II
Of course Lindsay Lohan would be hosting.
The fact that Cybill Shepherd is in this sketch already makes it funny. (Okay, I exaggerate.) But anyway, for the most part it was fast-paced and funny. Going back to Cybill, her presence is amusing, but her little rant was more like a history lesson. The thing with Martino was great, made me think, “Wow, I wouldn’t have thought to put that in.”
Is the phrase “You will never see me alive again,” really grammatically incorrect? I wouldn’t be surprised. Definitely wittier than the toilet humor they used for the actual cold opening.

Monologue
I’m not sure if this is all a throwback to this character he played. So he comes out, does a few bad jokes. Then Maya comes out, for reasons that aren’t really clear, not that the real SNL is very logical either.
“You're too close to the edge of the cliff to see the forest for the trees.” Don’t get it. Was that the point?
I feel like Maya should at least have some reaction to the biracial joke, even if it actually doesn’t bother her. Didn’t like this one as much as the opening.

Racist Catch Phrase
I’m sorry, but who has the name Geneva? It’s a city in Switzerland. Could you have meant Genevieve? And it’s not really a party if there are only 4 people. Anyway, technicalities aside, it’s a nice concept but not fully developed. It ended way too abruptly. I know endings are hard, but even if they all stormed out of the house it would have made more sense.
I liked the reference to Meet the Fockers, I thought that poked fun without being a downer. The Conan O’Brien thing was unnecessary, and I think a lot of the people who watch SNL would disagree.

Caller 25
Wow, pretty random. Judging from the actual episode, I’m not sure how well Deniro would do with breakdancing.
In general, it’s funny, but the jumping all over the place (in terms of storyline) distracts from that a bit. As a (hypothetical) viewer, I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on while I’m missing some witty dialogue. The most difficult transition was probably from the radio station to this house with the kids. There are two storylines here- pick one to focus on. I really liked what was going on with the kids, it seemed to me that you had a lot of potential material in that satirical (pre)teenage vein.
On a(nother) technical note, I think your teenage music references were a little outdated (Ace of Base, Run DMC…)

Celebrity Holiday
I thought this started out strong.
The thing about the real Kermit the Frog is that he’s not a sock puppet, as you may have noticed on the real episode. He’s a Muppet. (Although the fake Kermit on the Justin Timberlake episode was sort of a sock puppet.) So the joke would have worked if you had, say, the Target(?) sock dog.
I didn’t get the purpose of Cindy or Billy Joel, as the latter has been done before and the former didn’t make sense or seem to have a punchline. But Martin Sheen was a funny random celebrity.

To be continued...
