Gwenneth paused, panting, allowing her Boy to catch up. She rolled her shoulders wearily, annoyed with the restrictions of this small form.
Suddenly, a brand-new mindlink reached her, and she jumped. But the words were of comfort, and Gwenneth felt an immediate bond with this young female Cheysuli.
::Your help would be greatly appreciated,:: she replied, starting to run again as Jeff caught up. ::But I fear you do not know the entire situation, and there's no time to explain at the moment-- I'll be meeting up with the city guards any moment now. Please, you must be in human form when my Boy and I reach you. He will put up a fight, but we must subdue him as quickly and gently as possible and speed him away from this place.::
Gwenneth winced as the first shouts of the guards came. Behind her, she heard Jeff begin to slow, in obediance to the guards. ::I'm sorry!:: Gwenneth shouted to Jeff, but of course he couldn't hear. With a burst of fierce concentration, the liren forced her will upon the Boy for the first time ever.
Jeff began to run again, faster than ever before. His chest heaved and sweat flew in beaded droplets from his red face. Gwenneth led the way, forcing Jeff onward, dashing with all of her might for the rapidly closing gates.
She sped through the remaining gap and turned about quickly, just in time to see Jeff make a diving leap. The gates closed, catching on his coat, and it was torn from his shoulders. Gwenneth forced him on, oblivious to her own growing weariness, dashing down through the wet grass and looking around desperately for the one who had pledged her help.
::We are here!:: she called. ::Please, hurry, the guards are coming!::
At her lapse in concentration, Jeff's consciousness was returned to him. He stopped in the knee-high grass, staring around.
"What the hell?" he cried, wheeling around to look back at the city. A dozen or so guards had just exited their towers, and were running towards him.
There was a thud against his leg, and the boy looked down to see Gwennie standing there, looking utterly exhausted. He bent down and picked her up, holding her tightly as she struggled.
"Hush, Gwen, hush, it'll be alright. The guards are coming," he told her quietly, feeling the frantic pulse of her heart and wondering why his own beat so quickly.
