Ted, An interesting post, and, although I am no expert on the subject, I think all your suppositions are basically correct, other than perhaps "The only energy loss will be the friction in the prop shaft" - there has to be some loss in getting the prop to turn in the first place, no?

I have a three-bladed prop. on my T500 and let it rotate (it starts to turn and about 2.5 knots) and I really don't think the drag is very much. You are correct with thinking the only virtue of locking the shaft is to keep a two-bladed prop in line with a long keep - irrelevant in our case.

But I wanted to comment on why you want to spend so much more on a folding prop in the first place; do you race? I would have thought that the T500 is not such a competitive boat and that such marginal improvement is hardly worth the significant extra cost. I would take your supplier's estimate of up to a knot very sceptically, after all, he stands to make a buck or two on the sale.

Best,

Brian
