Nicole Renard, MWOT 2011 and the current national DYM, is entering Chapman this fall as a freshman. She's an extremely talented dancer (won prelim talent at MAOT) and has a terrific, outgoing personality and strong academics. She's tall, will probably have a killer swimsuit, and a charming interview. But she probably won't be able to compete this coming year due to her DYM duties. But maybe for 2015?

| [> Subject: Although I congratulate Florida on her win, every year I still think that the teen program still looks for its tried-and-true titleholder. The program seems to always crown the “sweet non-threatening girl,” who will do everything the program wants her to do rather than a forward thinking teen. I am not saying the girl needs to be controversial and outspoken, but rather someone who has her finger on the pulse of today’s society and understands teens. Instead we crown yet another non-memorable titleholder who I am sure will do a great job, but will remain bland and boring. Among the top 12, RI would have been my selection, as I think she is more of a representation of today’s teen. | |

| [> Subject: 3 things about the Teen program. 1) If California wants to win, we need to relocate to the south. 7 of the 9 national winners have represented a southern state. 2) No bashing intended here but this year's winner had bottom 40 written all over her when they put the state crown on her head. She is certainly pretty enough and charming enough but there is nothing about her that stands out to me. I would have sent the 2nd runner up and if not her the 3rd runner up. The judges missed the boat in Fresno again. Which brings me to my 3rd point. 3) The judges. Although this year's panel seemed good enough, we need to realize that MCOT is a state competition and we need to have state calibur judges. Instead we have local volunteers from programs that don't have a teen. We get nobody with a track record for picking national teen winners and the judges we do get are treated horribly. If you want judges who will commit to the process, then commit to the judges. Maybe Katie can help change that. | |

| [> Subject: One other point. I don't think Mikaela's performance had anything to do with her appearance. She's a cute girl, looks like a teen, and is a similar type in terms of looks to the winner. MAOT to me is a total crap shoot. I have tapes of every year's competition and I have no clue how the girls that win do so. Except for the last two - Elizabeth Fechtel and Rachel Wyatt - I don't think physical appearance seemed to play a role at all. I do think academics seem to play a disproportionate role in the results. But honestly, I don't have a clue why the girls who win are chosen. There doesn't seem to be much consistency in what they're looking for. Is there even a job description for MAOT like there is for MIss America? It's very frustrating. Yet the same states (mostly Southern) seem to do well year after year. What have they figured out that CA hasn't? Maybe the Teen powers that be need to review those tapes to see if they can figure out "the magic formula" if one exists. | |

She was not only a dark horse but she was practically an invisible horse. It probably had a lot to do with how Bob prepped them so I guess if Bob doesn't necessarily want a win at MAOT then we need to not be so disappointed when CA doesn't come close to a win, yet again. I'm just frustrated but I don't hold anything against Mikaela. She did her best and its just a pageant but it does seem Cal is in a strange funk right now. We need an ambush makeover from the inside out!

I and alot of people couldn't believe the 1st runner up didnt win but we all felt the same last year when Danamarie didn't win. The 1st runner up had a wonderful musical theater song that would have done great in Orlando. She also won prelim gown she had the sparkle and shine that I thought was what we wanted in a MCOT. Mikaela is a great girl and did her best at MAOT . I think the final say if from Bob. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 18:30:51 08/19/13 Mon The state teen ED should not be affiliated with any local committee or contestant(no conflict of interest). There should be a plan of preparation that is the standard for our teens and our state should cheer for our teens just as they do the Miss contestant. This is by no means directed at Kati because she just took this program over. We have needed a change for a long time and anyone of our girls could have won in the past. We are California!! [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
| [> [> Subject: This year our teen had 5 weeks between MCOT and MAOT, in that time she had cheer camp to attend and summer homework to complete, not a whole lot of time for much prep. Next year MAOT is 2 weeks sooner. California teens need to come to MCOT ready for the national pageant, there is no time to "prep" anything. And for the record, in the 9 years of MAOT, California has had a first runner up, a fourth runner up, two girls in the top 10 and another in the top 12. We haven't had a winner yet but we haven't done too bad either. | |

| [> [> [> Subject: The short amount of time between our teen pageant and the national pageant was a concern for me, however, Florida's pageant is held in July and so is South Carolina's. Both states have had the most recent winners and both pageants are after ours.. I agree with you, the teen contestants need to arrive in Fresno ready to win in Orlando. In my opinion, this dynamic makes it even more crucial for the local pageants to have a clear direction about what to look for at the local level so they can direct their judges accordingly and then, once they have their winner to prepare her adequately for Orlando - not just Fresno. | |

| [> [> [> [> Subject: There is no such rule prohibiting appointed teen titleholders. Because of space limitations, there can be no more than 100 contestants at Miss California (Miss and Teen combined.) Generally that means about 60 Miss contestants and 40 Teens but the numbers may be fudged a little in one direction or another. i.e. If there are 59 Miss Contestants they might allow for 41 teens. This year there were 61 Miss and 39 Teens. When determining who may compete in the teen program, priority will be given to the teens who won a pageant to get there. Second priority will be given to teens who are appointed. Third priority to at large contestants. Hope this clears up any misunderstanding. | |

Date Posted: 06:37:31 08/23/13 Fri I'm coming into this conversation late in the game, so please excuse my ignorance. However, having done national kid/teen pageants, I can say the south is HARDCORE about competing. They take it as seriously as the Miss competitions. Are there interview tapes of the top 5 interviews like at Miss A? I think the teen winners come out of the interview more than anything else--at least that is what it seems like. Maybe it is just our state that reads that way. That's how I used to prep--get old videos and STUDY EVERYTHING. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
