So I guess my problem is not with "soulism" but with "human soulism", the arrogant concept that hunans are made in the image of god (when it seems obvious to me that it is vice-versa) and that only human souls are important and have value.
I would also argue that even the pre-chipped Spike has more than a flicker of admirable qualities such as love and devotion to Drusilla, a certain joy of life (dog racing and Manchester United), emotional honesty and a sensitivity to the feelings of others. Okay, he is not "good" in any real sense but I believe he is doing a decent job, given the hand he has been dealt. The chipped Spike exhibits even more of these traits. I think it is not an accident that the differences between the soulless and ensouled Spike are not terribly obvious, in contrast to Angel/Angelus.
