Subject: SABT VS Non-SABT Lesson

I learned a very harsh lesson this week about dogs and dog breeders. I don't have all the facts and I probably will never know the whole story. I do know what I have experienced. I would also like everyone to know that I am not a breeder, nor do I show dogs. I just wanted a big, healthy, athletic, protective companion.

I have a female BB from Blackwell (non-SABT Breeder), she is out of Vegter and Firecracker. She is everything a BB is supposed to be physically, and temperment wise. She is athletic, outgoing, and absolutly beautiful. By the time she was 7 months old she had completed basic agility, two obedience classes, and had received her CGC. I couldn't be happier with this BB!

I just got a 7 month old male BB from Proffers Kennel (SABT Breeder), by way of Legions Boerboels (SABT Breeder). The male is out of Tovic Kobus and Proffers Nadere. The puppy is crippled by hip displaysia. He can't run, he walks with a limp, and he is in almost constant pain. It is hard for him to get up and he prefers to lay very still as much of the day as he can. His paws are splayed out and his kness are splayed in. His temperment is very weak, he is frightened and nervous. He has had no training that I can see and it appears very little socialization. At seven months he can't run around the block, go for a hike, sit on commmand, or walk correctly on a leash.

When I got the dog he was advertised as being available because he had a non-decended testicle. I was told later that his legs look kind of "hockey" because he is going through a growth spurt, and that he gets scared easy.

I did not pay for this dog, I only paid the shipping costs. This is a true case of getting what you paid for. But if I had know the true condition of his hips I would not have taken him. The cost for this free puppy is going to be very expensive, and I will never have a fully functional dog.

The lesson I learned is that just because people breed dogs does not make them dog experts. Being an SABT breeder doesn't mean anything if it allows a dog of this poor quality to make it out to the public unneutered and without its true condition being made available. If they didn't know, they should have.

To all those thinking about getting a BB because you just want a really good dog: I recommend you go with an experienced professional like John Blackwell, or a breeder that he recommends. I sure wish I would have got my second BB from his kennel!!
