Subject: Movie Sequel Fantasies

Do you have a favorite movie (any era, any genre) that you always thought was left hanging at the end, that needed a "what happened next" followup?

If so, what is the movie? And if you could write a sequel to that movie, what would happen in your sequel?

Let's get some discussion going on the boards!

[> Casablance is perfect as it is. However, it is sad to think of Rick alone for the rest of his life. (My version of a fantasy sequel inside.) -- Cece, 07:00:31 04/05/13 Fri [1]

The war is over. Victor Laslo has a brief illness and dies peacefully in Ilsa's arms. Through her grief, Ilsa is glad that she stayed with Laslo, and supported him in his resistance actions. He had been a brave and good man and she loved him for who he was. For a few years, she lives alone in Perpingon,( a border town between France and Spain, always longing for the man she had left behind in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Rick has moved back to Paris but remains alone, except for the company of Sam. Sam has saved his money and gets Rick to open another bar with him. He thinks it will fo Rick good. They call it Rick's Café Américain for old time's sake. When Rick hears of Laslo's death, he wonders what has happened to Ilsa. But he never tries to seek her out.
............

Her loneliness becoming unbearable, Ilsa herself decides to go back to Paris. But her sadness and pain is exacerbated by the sights and sounds of the city, and she feels she can never be happy. After being in Paris for two months, she goes for a walk in the artist area of the Left Bank where she is shocked to see Rick's Café Américain. She believes it is a coincidence, but she can not resist going inside.

When She sees Rick sitting at the bar, she can barely catch her breath. A part of her is terrified that he is married or has lost interest in her. Before she can go up to him, he turns and sees her. They walk tentatively towards each other, and then suddenly they are in each other's arms. The movie ends with their passionate kiss, with of course, As Time Goes By playing as the credits go up.

The actors HAVE to have been an aging Bogie and Bergman. No substitues allowed in my version.

[> [> [> [> Yes Isabella could play Ilsa. But Ingrid had an mysterious, enigmatic beauty that Isabella doesn't have. I can't think of any actress, living or dead, who could play Ingrid Bergamn, or any actor like Bogie. -- Cece, 15:14:57 04/05/13 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> What was it about Bogie? Anyone have any ideas? If he'd been acting today, would he have been a character actor instead of the star? He certainly isn't a pretty boy like Clooney, Pitt, and dozens of others. -- Cece, 18:03:41 04/05/13 Fri [1]

[> Could Casablanca be remade? Of course it could. It could be redone to more realistic, better dialogue, on location rather than film sets, an actor much more handsome than Bogie, etc. But the reasons Casablanca is so much loved, and so iconic, are ephemeral. It would be like trying to capture lightening in a bottle. Casablanca is a movie of its time and place, its actors and the cadenceses of their voices, and of course, the famous lines that everyone knows. Those lines couldn't be repeated without sounding parodic. No Casablanca, no sequel . Just in our minds. -- Cece, 14:33:52 04/05/13 Fri [1]

[> [> Ooh, I loved To Sir with Love (I loved the song too.) There was an attraction between Sir and the young teacher, but the time might have been too early to really delve into interracial marriages. In the mid 1960s in the UK, immigration had been expanding rapidly, and there was still a lot of hostility. Remember the black kid who dad died and the kids won't actually attend the funeral? Sidney Poitier was wonderful. He did get his love in Guess who's coming to dinner. -- Cece, 23:41:23 04/05/13 Fri [1]

[> [> [> In the book on which the film is based (an excellent read, by Edward Braithwaite), Sir falls in love with the teacher (Gillian Blanchard), and they get married. They do have to deal with a lot of prejudice though. -- Dee, 16:38:33 04/12/13 Fri [1]

[> The American President is one movie that I always thought should have had a sequel. Did Sydney and Andrew Shepherd marry? And if so, how would she handle being First Lady? Would there be conflicts between her and his loyal staff as she asserts her influence? Would the public accept her? It would have been an interesting look at how they would balance their new personal life amid world events and the political and social pressures of Washington. -- Araninda, 22:48:32 04/05/13 Fri [1]

[> This may be bordering sacreligious, but it would've been great to see how Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet fare after the wedding -- haha! Would have loved to see their lives and bantering as a married couple, with kids, how they interacted under fire and day-to-day. Of course, it would've been a challenge not to morph all their 'tension' into a hum-drum, boring relationship, but , that's the challenge of the story -- to keep the fire burning! Would be nice to see it played out, imo. -- mj, 04:55:16 04/06/13 Sat [1]

[> [> Emma Tennant wrote a sequel to P & P called Pemberley, which is exactly what you describe. I scanned the first chapter a number of years ago, and I believe it is well written. However, I was too much aware of a modern author affecting JA's distinctive voice, and found it offputting. Still, I think it got good reviews. -- Cece, 14:46:30 04/06/13 Sat [1]

[> [> [> Hmmn -- thanks for teh info. I'll look for it and give it a whirl for some beach reading this summer -- maybe... Part of me just wants to imagine and love JA's ending with no need to continue writing about the lives of these iconic characters. :) -- mj, 16:30:01 04/06/13 Sat [1]

[> [> [> [> Totally understandable... there's a LOT of P&P fanfic out there, and I've read some decent sequels (there's a writer on fanfiction.net called theredrobin that's written some truly beautiful stories - I love her writing), but as you said, sometimes it's better to leave things to the imagination. -- Dee, 16:44:50 04/12/13 Fri [1]

P D James wrote a mystery novel called Death at Pemberly, I think was the title , Darcy and Bennett are portrayed years later with kids.
