First I'll give you the standard equipment on the TIE Defender: 2 Ion cannons, 4 laser cannons, 2 missile tubes (they can carry any missiles, proton torpedoes, cuncussion missiles, diamond/boron missiles, and the new Baradium missiles [those would royally f*ck up any ship])
and 1 tractor beam projecter pointing downward.
TIE Defenders are faster than TIE Intercaptors (so it can to somewhere around .9 to .95c), it has armor on par with X-wings, and hyperdrive. The tractor beam can be used to make super tight turns, Corran Horn once used his to avoid laser fire that would have killed him. the pilot latches on to a larger ship (like a runabout) and continue to use their engines, thus causing a very tight turn.
the ship has greatly improved manuverability over the TIE fighters and intersceptors. The agility of this craft puts TIE Intercaptors to shame.
So, the feddies now see themseoves on the lumbering battle ship side of the spectrum as far as shuttles/fighters go. The run-abouts and shuttles would be hard pressed to defeat this enemy, when they enjoy numeric, speed, and agility advantages.
