Tristan picked at the bandage around his wrist as he watched Marz return to the fire with a knife and spear for Alakbar. He smirked when the prince got his words mixed up, thinking this pathetic little idiot who’d allowed himself to be captured by assassins must not have been too clever to begin with. When Marz offered to throw the spear as an example, he winced as he watched him miss his mark by several feet. At least he assumed he missed his mark, unless he really had been aiming for that little patch of dirt between the two wilted looking trees and the large grey rock.

Naturally, Tristan assumed it was because he was using his left hand, thus making him all the more determined to teach him how to wield a weapon properly while his right was injured. Tristan hadn’t ever really taught anybody anything before, but since he was already such an expert on weaponry, he decided it couldn’t be that difficult. Plus, he thought it’d be really fun to boss Marz around for a bit, too.

When Marz abandoned Alakbar to play with his new weapons, Tristan didn’t even think anything of it when he tossed an arm around his shoulders. He only became consciously aware of it when Marz pulled away, looking a little bothered about something. Oops, he thought, wincing again, this time at the mental apology Marz soon sent him. He bit his tongue and tried to think about what to say to that, but unfortunately, Jeremy popped up at that moment, offering him something called trail mix and Advil. Tristan narrowed his eyes at the tiny pills, his glare growing even more venomous when the kid spit out some ridiculous comment about his reaction to stronger drugs.

“I would not have a shit fit,” he muttered, purposefully looking away from the Advil as if he didn’t care. Marz pocketed the pills, anyway, and he decided not to dwell on it for now. Eventually, he’d sneak his hand in and grab the stuff, then he could toss it. Well, maybe not toss it, since that would be an utter waste of perfectly good—no! Toss it. He’d toss it. Preferably back into Jeremy’s face, the insolent little prick.

“It looks like we're not ready to leave yet,” Marz said suddenly, turning to him, “so I guess I should practice meditating for the chakras a little bit huh?”

The sour look on Tristan’s face disappeared completely, his features instead lighting up as if someone had lit a spark behind his dark eyes.

“Yeah!” he said, nodding with unusual enthusiasm. “That’s a great idea! We’ll just get Erlic to teach you the first step or whatever since you’ve got that meditation thing down already.”

He searched for Marz’s teacher, disappointment coming to his face when he saw he was engaged in conversation with Ravin. After a moment, he disappeared inside his cave, probably to gather his stuff together. Tristan was so excited about Marz embarking on the next stage of learning to control his magic, that he could scarcely stand to wait for the man to return.

“Oh hell,” he said, giving Marz a superior look. “We don’t need him, anyway. You can just try and do it by yourself, right? It can’t be that hard.”

Marz looked a little askance at that, maybe because he was trying to remember if he could do the first chakra lesson without Erlic. Tristan, however, had enough confidence for both of them. Besides, he was constantly plagued with concern around Marz, always worrying that he’d end up blowing himself up the next time he got really pissed. Of course, Tristan worried about a lot of things, but this was the first time he’d ever spent so much time worrying over another person. It wasn’t a particularly comfortable feeling, so he was all the more determined to help Marz through this.

“Well, come on,” he finally said, grabbing Marz and pulling him up beside him. They headed off to their cave, excitement making Tristan walk faster than he normally did. After a few seconds, he remembered his previous thoughts, just before Jeremy had interrupted, and he grew a bit pensive again. A moment later, he boldly reached out and took Marz’s hand, making his lover give him a shocked look—since they were still in plain view of any casual onlookers.

“I’m not saying I’m ready to make out at the dinner table,” he growled, staring hard at the ground. “But…you don’t have to keep acting like I’ve got the plague or something.” He looked up and gave Marz a tentative smile as they came up to the entrance, ducking under the animal skin before going inside the cave.

“Okay, where do we begin?” he asked, the excitement returning to his voice. “Do we have to do those stupid jumping jack things again? Those were really stupid, so I think we should just skip them anyway. What are you supposed to do with this chakra thing once you find it, huh?”

Maybe we really do need Erlic, he thought, but a moment later he shook his head. The two of them could get by fine enough. He was sure Marz would know exactly what to do. Why would he have even suggested it otherwise?
