• It may be oil that was in the exhaust before the new engine was cranked. Sometimes the oil on the valve guides of a new engine will cause smoke but should clear up after a few minutes of warming up. The choke will cause black smoke if partially closed. Oil will cause white/gray smoke. An intake manifold that is not torqued properly will cause oil to wick out the exhaust too.   • Well, I can't say that I have had a square deal with Jack. Except for the 280ZX that I gave him..that went pretty smooth. I had bought a bare block from him that was never delivered, but I did get a camshaft later for my trouble's.
