Subject: MIck Taylor article in NY Daily News

Saw this in the paper yesterday, thought I'd share it here.

Mick Taylor: The best musician ever to play with the Rolling Stones returns

Mick Taylor knows that serious Stones fans consider him to be the best lead guitarist the band ever had. Certainly, he’s the most fluid, melodic and expansive. But when asked about it, he pooh-poohs the notion.

“Well, they only had three [leads] — Brian Jones, Ron Wood and me,” he says. “And I think Ron is very underrated. Maybe they didn’t write the kinds of songs that leave space for a guitar solo after [Wood] joined. At the time, they used to write some songs that needed a solo just because I was there and I can play.”

That’s an understatement.

For proof, listen to Taylor’s driving and fleet runs in songs like “Sway” and “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’,” or his contributions throughout the 1970 live disc “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out.” His fierce and spiraling solo in “Sympathy for the Devil” could still send aspiring guitar heroes reeling in awe. For all the skills he showed with the Faces, Wood’s work with the Stones mainly finds him playing second rhythm with Keith Richards, mirroring him rather than goading him.

Many fans also consider Taylor’s era with the band — 1969 to 1974 — to be their creative peak. While Taylor hasn’t had a decent media profile since, he has continued to hone his six-string skills in a dizzying array of projects, including an ongoing band with Jack Bruce, touring gigs with Bob Dylan or his original band leader (John Mayall), and on solo albums like his celebrated 2000 disc, “A Stone’s Throw.”

Still, it’s been years since Taylor played an extended gig with his own band in New York. (He thinks the last time may date back to the final days of the defunct Bottom Line). That makes it especially sweet that Taylor will front his latest group (which includes members of one of Jeff Beck’s ’70s bands) at 12 shows at the intimate club Iridium. He’ll also play a gig there with the house band, who backed the late Les Paul.

Taylor will perform songs that touch on all of his influences, from blues-rock to Latin-jazz, with plenty of room left for “melodic instrumentals.”

Like Jeff Beck, Taylor’s skittish and broad resume has robbed him of a more lucrative career. “I’m a reluctant band leader,” he says. “I just like to stand there and play guitar. Sometimes I like to have fun and sing and dance around, but Mick Jagger is much better at that kind of thing.”

Not only does Taylor say he retains a warm relationship with Jagger and Richards, he downplays the friction that led him to quit the world’s greatest rock ’n’ roll band to begin with

“There was a bit of tension but not the sort of thing you would fight about,” he says. “The reasons I left were not about the music or the inner workings of the band but about being famous and doing that much work when you’re young and when you have a young family. Nobody had a stable home.”

Likewise, Taylor smooths over the oft-reported notion that he quit in frustration over not getting writing credits on songs he felt he helped shape, like “Time Waits for No One” and “Moonlight Mile.”

“It was a little bit of a bone of contention at the time,” he allows. “But I don’t think I’m as bitter about it as Bill Wyman. I can’t believe Bill is really bitter after all these years. Come on!”

Taylor does say some recordings involved more time and toil than they should have, due to Richards’ avowed drug problems, though he adds: “We didn’t think of them as problems in those days. We saw them as recreation.”

He calls Keith brave for writing candidly about it in his book, though he says he didn’t recognize the descriptions of himself in the tome. “I was never morose,” he says. “He is just as morose as me. I am shy.”

Since his departure, Taylor has worked with the band periodically, adding bits to “Tattoo You” in 1981 and even recording overdubs for last year’s re-release of “Exile on Main Street,” which includes his sole songwriting credit (“Ventilator Blues”). But he remains cagey about rumors he’ll rejoin the Stones on a proposed 50th anniversary tour next year. “I don’t know,” is all he’ll say.

In the meantime, Taylor just collaborated with Ron Wood on a song for “CSI: Miami.” And he plans to continue the rambling life of the journeyman musician he’s enjoyed for over three decades. It’s a role that allows him to indulge his truest love: the blues. “It all comes back to the blues,” he says. “Ultimately, that’s where we all go for nourishment and for warmth.”
