As you all know you are supposed to pay $25 for the prom. And as you all know i'm left with the task of collecting it from you people. So tell you what: those in the same class/combi/stream/clique could you pool your money together so that i won't have to hunt you lousy lot down.I'm finishing my As on the 28th so i don't want any money with me before that.....

i noe most of u are in a celebratory mood now. i was very unhappy with ur recent performances. it seems to me that u r relaxing now, after the exhaustive prelims and must be having fun out there now, sending cards and such. but i must remind u, u have 48 DAYS LEFT! there is no more time to lose now. it is a WAR out there. if u think u r CLASSIER than the rest, u r BETTER than them, that it is STUPID to be studying out there right now, let me tell u, the first thing i did after completing my last bio paper this morning is to rush home and sleep, then write u this email and ready to study yet again. if u think that u r 3A graded student now, u will be taught a LESSON OF UR LIFE. come the A levels the others r going to OPEN THE FLOODGATES and drown you with their hardwork and dedication. if u think that doing well for the prelims means that u can take it easy and cut down on studying, u will pay a heavy price during the A levels because history ( as in the march common test ) will repeat itself.

we all noe that the best time to study is after a major exam, cause the MOTIVATION will be at its highest. if u r still suffering from the blues after the demoralizing maths papers, i hope u recover soon. a setback should onli STRENGTHEN UR RESOLVE to do well during the A levels.

i have to leave now cause i have no more time for you. i have to leave hurriedly to study for my bio again. we will walk out of the examination halls, come the 28th of nov, as NERDS AND IDIOTS!

"For a couple years I've been blaming it on lack of sleep and too much pressure from my job, but now I found out the real reason:

I'm tired because I'm overworked. The population of Singapore is about 3 million. 700 thousands are retired.

That leaves 2.3 million to do the work. There are 1.5 million in school, which leaves 800 thousands to do the work.

Of this, there are 400 thousands who are employed by the government, they do no work. Thus leaving 400 thousands others to do the work.

Another 200 thousands are in the Armed Forces, Police and Civil Defence which leaves 200 thousands to do the work.

At any given time there are 154,000 people in hospitals, old folks home, etc. leaving 46,000 to do the work. Now, there are 45,998 people in prisons.

That leaves just two people to do the work.

Okie pple...I'm back...haha...just woke up and bath and stuff...then got some morning thoughts to share...

Remember yesterday Lit Make-up, Mrs C was saying something like this...

"Doctors and Nurses have to put their feelings aside and behave like professionals(i.e. no feelings suring work), if not when each time a patient dies(i.e. they tried but FAILED to save the life of the patient) they will be terribly upset. Those who cannot take it will resign."

These lead me to think about the situation of a teacher. How similar will it be? Or is there an exception? What do you think people? todae was a damn shioK day riTE?!? from earli morning i knew it was gonna be a good day liaoZ... the teachErs day thingie in skool was quite cooL... i enjoyed myselF immenseLy... its like... the whole skool atmosphere was so different... no muggers, no nerds.... juz... happy pple celebratinG :)

but the real fun part was after that.. when 12 snr gers (+ one small zhihao.. hehe) geared up wif our little pieces of cloth and washed mr tan's caR!.. so nice! and sHinY!..heheh (altho it was oreddi kinda shiny at the start lah...) but still it was damn damn cool... and after we started, we cdnt stop... we saw mr chee's car which was terribly dirty.. and cleaned it toO!>.. even the greasy tyreS!!! and ms noraida's car toO!... hehe... we're such nice pple man.. cannot stand it>..hehhehe.. but then again, out of these 12 gers... got some 'supervisers' lah...like ME..hehhe (or shd i say slackeRs...hmm)... coz dun haf cloth... not my faulT...hahha

anyway after that was a greaT captain's ball sessioN wif 13 of us... juz happily playing on the track altho weiying got injured... it felt good to be playing wif u guyS maN... throroughly enjoyed iT... den caRDs games (as usuaL)....heh

today very happening...though got mock hcl in the morning but nvr mind abt that
afternoon went to sa with xiuwen and classmates to support my friend for the National Schools Songwriting Competition...(Singing oso)...then she got such a sweet voice can...then she got into top 3 for both song writing and tune...so zai..then realised the champion is oso sum1 i noe from my jap class...then sum1 tapped me on the shoulder and realised he's our jnr canoeist who went over to sa....
then we saw a lot of very famous pple..like lee weisong and wu qikang...then realised these song writers are actually quite effeminate...and lee seems to have a thing for red shoes.
then oso saw cai liling...then take picture with her..and xiuwen pointed to my pimple then cai liling put in her 2 cents worth oso...(so paisey!!) but then she very bubbly, sunshine and very cute oso
then went taka with xiuwen and saw kym ng with this guy old enough to be her father...then realised xiuwen can really spend $$...
woah...that really sums up the day...happening saturday eh?
hehz...beats staying at home and mould away...(really...what happened to my plan of studying at national lib with xiuwen?? i really wonder...)

Just an update on my stomach ache, the doctor said it's viral infection, dunno what lar, but for sure it's not kidney or liver problem...hehe. Still painful though...

juz finished skool and like cant find everybody leh... where did everybody disappear to?!??!?!

anyway... investiture later ley... u all excited anot...haha.. i'm NOT btw... its like... i feel like its more like a chore than anything else... firstly coz theres maths mock tmr and everybodys not in the mood of celebrating... and secondly of coz (for me tt is) i hafta a whole lotta things to pass down to the next capt that isnt exactly very updated and done yet... haha...ooPs :P

Just now went down to Kallang to observe the Junior train...whao liaoz...i think they are quite okayz lar...but it is really abit too hard for Mr. Yong lor...Jnrs they all always capsize one...then some of them(the T1s rowers of course) always have to stop to rescue...then it is like wasting their training time liddat...I really Xing Shang Weifa and Faizal leh...they pushed damn hard...

Hey guys...I'm at Bishan "Dome" now...accessing the internet for free one...damn shiok....actually i have planned to go to the gym with my two sec. sch frens one...since they called me yesterday night...oso dunnoe to reject them...do some catching up lor...but then hor...when i met them at 7:00pm at Bishan just now...moi too tired liaoz lor...then i suggest we call the workout thingie off and go and eat dinner...we three share half a duck lor...okie lar the dinner...and now we end up in this place, reading Daniel Newsweek lor...think my these two frens really patient with me...accompany me by reading newsweek...or should i say...zhouboing??? Just did 5+++ hours of solid revision for Lit...realli never felt so happi doing revision b4 leh...when i was revising for Econs for the past few daes...realli got damn stessed up and like cannot tahan liddat...but today, I decided to switch subject(as I have said so in my earlier msg prior to this one)...revising my favourite subject...the feeling is different altogether...suddenly enjoys revision liaoz...it is the subject lar...discover so many new things when going through Blake's "Songs of Innocence and of Experience", Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", Dicken's "Great Expectations" and Chaucer's "The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale"...everything go through abit abit at a time..if not will be damn sianz one lor...oso not productive one...

Talking about Blake...allow me to get back to the "didactic purpose" of the poem "A Poison Tree", in case some of you miss out...acherly it is not likely lor, cos' it is so obvious from the first stanza...but i shall put it in another words for you all...it serves to teach us that repression of anger can breed malevolence...So? so next time when you are angry with somebody, make it clear to him/her that you are angry, then a lot of problems can be solved liaoz...okayz? meaningful right? learn sth?

2) In chpt 5 of Grt E(x), towards the last part, Pip uses a simile to link the Hulk to the "wicked Noah's Ark"...what is the significance? Me abit blur liaoz...
3) How is "The Chimney Sweeper" and "Night" (both in SofI) related to the rest of the poems found in SofI???

4 more weeks to prelims...and I am still scoring about 25-26/40 for econs mcqs(those tys paper1)...this time die liaoz...okie i have made up my mind...dun study econs mcqs liaoz...it's time to study lit...so many things i dunnoe yet...hopefully by the end of today, i'll be able to draw out the plot sketches for Grt E(x), Tess and WofB...at least revising Lit will be more interesting than Econs...

and one more thing...I'm proud to announce that I have swam the 100 laps of my life yesterday...w/o goggles somemore...it's freestyle but i din kick cos' i use the float...kicking waste alot of energy...so must make it easier...if not cannot last one...acherly body can still take it, but my eyes can't lor...then yesterday like wasted liddat...eyes pain cannot study...

Hi pple...Sorry for posting so many messages at one go...Well this night I seems to be feeling alot alot alot...so got alot alot alot of things to write...

Sorry for posting that very pessi-msg today...just hope that it doesn't affect everybody...I was feeling kind of down just now...very wierd...by right I should be very happy, cos' I broke my 2.4km timing todae at around 7:25pm in Yishun Stadium...and the first person I share that piece of good new is Alvin lar...and i shall spare the rest of the details...not very healthy to know about them lar...

Hey guys, prelims are like only 32 days away and there is only 90 more days to A'level...for those who want to do well, (well this means everybody) you gotto start doing your work and preparation now...no time to slack already...anything you dun noe or not sure, betta ask your fren or teacher...if not by the time A'level comes, you will definitely be panicky and fearful one...must take this advice okie?

Well it is always good to have a goal in life to work towards...Since I have shared this very ambitious goal of mine with some people already, might as well, share it with the whole team...My big goal in life is that in 10-12 years time(from now), I must hold a very very grand wedding, and invite all of you, njcanoeists(if i can still contact you pple) and we will "Yam Seng" together...hopefully I'll be able to arrive at this goal, the journey of course includes: 1) doing well for Prelims and A'levels(the most immediate goal), 2) Ns for 2 n 1/2 years and Uni for 4 yrs...by the time i graduate, i'll be around 25 year old, 3)find a good job and save alot of $$$, and at the time, find that "special someone"...and finally my big goal in life...

Sounds very idealistic and ambitious huh? Eh...at least i share with you all leh...what big goals do you pple have? share leh...for those who dun have goals, gotto find one, cos' it'll be a great motivation...

Okay people, I have decided to delete away my icq acc and mirc...so you guys will not be able to reach me liaoz...I have decided to put all my energy in my studies...I can still remember how I studied for my O'levels...I spent more than 13 months preparing for my only seven subjects, and guessed what...I did not do as well as some people who have spent only less than 3 months...this nightmarish thought has been haunting me for the past weeks after NS...making me a real freak...a real study freak...I realise that the problem lies with my productivity...I merely study for the sake of study, and I keep on telling myself I have studied alot alot liaoz...that's my only consolation, and it is the worst deceit of all...self-deception...

Perhaps...by closing down the icq and mirc account would be a good start...icqing and mircing has been a real waste of time...i'm sorry for those who like to use it...but this is how i feel...takes so long to talk so little...and like there's a gap liddat...not sincere at all...

Seems like everyone is doing great...I feel very happy for you all...everyone has their own dreams to pursue...own promises to fulfil...own aspiration in life...many a times, you will tend to neglect people who care for you...many a times, you will people for granted...many a times...you will be too self-absorbed, and think that the world only revolve around u yourself...but whatever it is...and on top of everything else...who's going to care much about what you did? eh guys, have not been doing any training for like some 20 days liao, ever since canoeing came to an end. been studying n nothing else but studying. lost 2 kg ever since. think i getting fairer liao, have not been doing anything under the sun for like 20 days, even my once dark hands r like turning fairer. din reallie got bothered until recently, as i was looking at myself in the mirror and found that the once bruce-lee style abs also seems to be disappearing. the once ultra-defined arms are also not what they used to be liao. think turning soft already. reallie quite disheartened. and the final straw, when shi-en called me up a few hours ago to announce his new 2.4 km record, beating me by almost 30 seconds! reallie can't believe it. everything also seems to lose to him. canoeing lose to him, studies lose to him, now his pull-ups also catch up with me liao. and even the one area that i thought i am quite zai-hang in also kena taken over by him liao. 30 seconds!!! shi-en, r u telling the truth or not?

anyway shi-en u have reignited me, the hunger and competitive edge in me. think i seems to have lost abit of competitiveness ever since the NS. NO!! i must not let my muscles fade into history. i must not let my one and a half years of hardwork become just a memory. i have decided to resume my own self-training. starting from today. Greg, so u can run very fast hah, 8.39min hah? so somebody can do 30 pull-ups hah? i shall challenge that. even though NS is over, but surely there is still life after canoeing. surely there is still more challenges ahead, waiting for us to explore and conquer. in " The Quest to be the Perfect man " i shall embark on my own journey, i shall continue fighting on 2 fronts, my studies and my fitness. Greg, so u got AABO for ur common test hah? i shall get 3A come the promos, starting with the mock physics this sat. i envisage the day a few months from now when all of us shall go back to our kallang basin, teaching the jrns what we have learnt and stuff. that will be the day when i shall finally beat all the T rowers. who is linus, who is shi-en. a few months from now these pple shall be condemned into history. i shall be the undisputed T1 500 and T1 1000M champion. i mean come on man, do u wan to go back to kallang basin a few months from now and find urself behind all ur juniors, getting thrashed by them in every single sets? no right. after all i am still the Laoda what. shawn came back and still beat all the T rowers what right?

Siti, don't be too upset...

Weiying, the board looks very gloomy and formal leh. Don't really like... it's all boxed up and defined. But again, it might be because of the green tinge and dark colours...

Regarding juniors training: Wow! 16km dragon boat race and 30km of rowing, that sounds v challenging and new...if i got the time, really would like to participate. But since it's the time to study, really must study liao...

Anyway, I realised that i missed rowing terribly when i went down to row yesterday. When i rowed in my k with my own paddle and felt the water once again, i really felt vvvvvvv good. Appealing to all who feel depressed and restless to go down and fa xie all your frustations away. It's really therapeutic :)

Update on Junior's Water Training -- Mr Yong, 17:17:07 08/04/01 Sat
Thank you Siti, Xiuwen, Fenny, Jamine, Xueying, Daniel, Lee Tong, Keith, Weiye, Greg, Fletcher and Wenshun for being at Kallang yesterday. Your support and help is invaluable, especially at this time when capsizing is very frequent. (By the way, I greatly missed all of you.)
I have already fixed the K1, K2 and T rowers for the junior team already. As it was raining very heavily yesterday, I had a very good opportunity to explain my 'plans' to them. The girls' team: K1: Huiwen, Qihui and Caiyi; K2: Shihui and Peck Yean; T: Kwan Mei and Cynthia. The boys' team: K1: Faizal, Andrew and Weifa; K2: Kwanyu and Marcus, Melvin and Jason, Weixiong and Beng Chuan; T: Peiweng, John, Zhiyuan, Zhiyong and Shunqi.
The training will now be broken into 2 shifts. For one shift, kayakists will train in K's; the other shift, they will train in T's. This is to ensure that kayakists are working on both balancing and technique & mileage in each training. The training course is reduced to 250 m (from jetty to 500-m mark) to facililate rescuing. K1 kayakists will only be doing K1 and T1, while K2 kayakists will rotate to practise K1 and T1. All K1's must be used in every training. All T1's must be used in every training too.
They will be doing low intensity, high volume canoeing mileage in preparation for the 30-km race on 9 Sep and the 6-km dragon boat race on 16 Sep. Last training is on 1 Sep (Sat). Hence, 8 more water training from now to 1 Sep.
We will also be approaching some secondary schools soon to recruit talented canoeists to join us: first targets will be SJI and GESS.
I am trying to push them a bit more. This is only their second water training, and I am asking them to do mileage at the training course, but without seat of course. I tried to explain to them that 'trying out' different events would be wasting too much time and persuade them to trust my experience in allocating individuals to the various events. I assured them that I had already assessed their suitability for events during their first water training, and spent a lot of time figuring out the overall team strategy. I emphasized the need to focus on giving their very best whichever event they were put in, instead of fighting among one another for 'events'. I told them that it was never a case of which event they would participating in, but a case of how well they would be doing in their event.
I have also told them that I wanted them to split into different groups to look into ways to improve the team: routine training (captains and QMs); physical/nutrition, technical/safety, mental/tactical, juniors' recruitment/training, special events and welfare/injury/team cohesion.
I also talked about the importance of 'health' supplement (multivits) and 'recovery' supplement (Endurox and protein).
I told them the great effect that creatine had on me, but I also warned them on the risks of taking creatine. Seniors with excess Endurox, Just Whey, Designer Protein, Size Up or Creatine may set up a garage sale to sell them at an diecounted price to your juniors.

hai...Mr Whitby's absence may be good news to some...but not to all...it has given me more motivation to skip the triple chinese at the end of the day....hai....poor me...so few lessons yet have to stay till 5....u noe...5...no one else is around at that period of time and the classrooms are all so quiet...but u will see those long-suffering hcl students strolling out of the tutorial looking as haggard as can be...

my fren oredi ciao liao...left guai me sitting here in the library TRYING to get some work done...(note the use of the word 'trying') think frankie will understand my plight...hai...so sad...hai...very sad....hai...too sad to type anything already...

hm..ok lemme think of something pleasant for a change...oh yah...everyone managed to grab he best deal in town? 2 pcs chicken going at 1.99!!!! very sad can...especially the crispy chicken skin!!! very CRISPY! hurry down to KFC now! whilst stocks last! then the award of the best popcorn in Singapore goes to Cathay at CAUSEWAY POINT...it's so heavenly that once u pop...u really really really can't stop. Trust me..... and go down to causeway point today for the most delicious popcorn of the millennium!!

hallo guys...i tink i've missed alot of stuff lately..havent been coming to the message board to read stuff...but suddenly felt like taking time off from work n studying to read n type some shit here...

dunnoe bout u guys but i feel tht everyone is getting depressed after the NS....oh come on...i was kicked out from my semis too... n i remembered tht e morning b4 my race...jon n ben n some other pple were talking bou medal hopefuls....n they were pinning on me n doug to get a medal.. well u noe e rest of the story...i jus couldnt beliff e fact tht i would get kicked out frm the semis...but after NCC finals...which i got 5th...i came to realised tht i jus wasnt good enuff n dont deserve the medal....aniway i'm still proud being the reigning take-off king...ralli...whenever i feel like i'm lousy..i'll tink of all those moments when our boats could lead e rest of e boats by alot at e start...it ralli made me feel gooD!!..hehe...n not forgetting tht i may not b s'pore no.1 in k2...but i still am europe no7 n finland no.4 ...haha...

well..after readin wat lawrence said bout not knowing whether we have given our best..i felt realli sad.i totally agree wif wat he said. seriously..i have been terribly ill since 2 weeks b4 national schools. i neber realli told anibodi how mi condition was coz i didn't wan raiyan to worry. i kept telling him i'm alrite..but truthfully i wasn't. i wld wake up every morning have difficulties to breathe..n add tt to a splitting headache..i didn't realli help mi cause much. recently..i haven been at mi best of moods..coz partly i am sick..n tt i keep thinking back of the past. seriously..i oso do not know whether i have given my best...given the fact mi rest ended at the 250 mark. it was such a cruel blow to me..coz i went out wif confidence(not complacency)...yet came back a beaten person. the manner of defeat was so cruel..tt i can't get it out of mi mind. i brand miself a loser becoz i am one...i have realli let raiyan down. i shld have been the one rowing wif mr yong on the 22nd of July. up till 2dae..i still do not know wat is my best. i noe everythin is over..n wateva i has happened on the 20th of July has oredi happened. nothin can be brought back. so here..i wld like to apologise to raiyan fer all the shit he has to take...n oso to frankie...sorri fer depriving u of a deserved place..

juz wanna say that.. everything that we do in life ultimately comes to and end... even this thing called "Life" itself will end someday... so... muz learn how to handle parting wif the trainings... and canoeing in general... but of coz we dun haf to part wif it completely... jnr trgs? alumni?...
u all know that there would always be a special place for NJCanoeists 2000-2001 in each of the 35 hearts...

but hey... haf u all acherly thought about what had made the past 1.5 years so memorable?
most of us will keep on talking abt the training and the good and bad stuff we went thru together...
but...we haf to adjust our midset and look beyond that...

it wasnt just the TRAINING that was important... its training with TEAMMATES and going thru stuff with TEAMMATES...

ultimately, TEAMMATES are the essential thing here... and guess what!??!

WE STILL HAF EACH OTHER!!!!! :)

altho no more trgs, the 00-01 team will always be around.. and that's the most important thing to remember k?

instead of flocking to kallang, lets flock in the canteen... library... our favourite 6th ave ice cream place..!!
not everything has to end so saDly... :)

1st things 1st: Don't mean to make you all feel depressed with that earlier msg of mine...
Just felt damn sick for the whole day and that was just a part of my frustration of being sick MOST of the time (had been sick throughout e weekend) and fatigueness from the medication. Totally drained out by all that stupid antibiotics and pills...To think about it, it's really depressing to know that i'm made up of synthetic stuffs (vitamins, supplements, medicine, antibiotics...)ARGh!!! it's just depressing!!!
Okok, i'm crapping like shit~
but hey, really hope that we all could be strong and be happy :)
Perhaps some of you will think that i'm having very extreme mood swings, but i really felt much better after i got this stiffling feeling out after i sort things out with my parents~

Just dropping a paragraph from my essay that i had been editing thorought the weekend...Ultimately my conscience would not allow me to let this paragraph seen by our junior's eyes...

Prior to this, I was saying that NS had been a test of how we well we can draw strength from one another, to support one another and most importantly to stay with one another. This paragraph is my answer...

"I think we have failed our last test. Currently, everyone seem to lose faith and the team is disintegrating. Is this merely an inaccurate assessment on my part? I don't know. But, had the lessons that we learnt afters spending 1.5 solid years a fluke? I'm currently disillusioned with everything. Perhaps I'm just being bitter. I really hope that I'm wrong. But, is the breaking of our canoeing table symbolic?"

I guess i'm just upset with my life. The mounting pressure from family and school work, the sudden disequilibrium without canoeing, everything is just eating me up, tearing me up into pieces. Something that i thought i could hold on to is disintegrating. I'm going crazy. I know that typing all these will merely worsened the already bad situtation. Yet i'm still typing it down...I don't know what i'm doing also. Clinging on to the past as Siti had put it? Or i'm just being a bitter fool that is thinking over unduly things?

Perhaps, i'm going to contradict myself with this last paragraph from my essay. But i think this paragraph ultimately reflects my overall thoughts for the team.

"Whatever that may happen, my stay in NJC would have been much less meaningful if there were to be no NJcanoeing team. The fulfilling feeling of being able to train and work together is great. Indeed the trainings, the rowing, the runs, the scolding, the stress, and all the stuff that the team had gone through together are really the test of the limit of the human heart. It is amazing how much each and every one of us has mature and grown over the years. The rush and excitement of running from tutorial blocks to the atrium and granstand for trainings is the nitty grity things that i will miss terribly. The feeling of waking up early on Saturdays and Sundays looking forward to rowing wil be terribly missed too. Canoeing not only teaches the physique but also the mental. The whole experience will change our lives dramatically. Choose to Live Life with No Regrets."

Thanks for replying to me. I can't believe that you actually read my lengthy msg. I seriously thought no one would bother. I had this misconception that you, after experiencing so much success, would certainly feel really psyched up about everything in life .ie coming down to help the juniors every training or something like that. I didn't know that you felt the way you did. Actually, the subject of loneliness is so alien yet so familiar to me. You know how it is at home(I think i've told you before). I know how it is for you. I think I've been bombarded with so much crap in life that I've sort of gotten used to it.
What I said to you before the Lit S session really reflected my feelings then. Would all of us be like strangers after some time?
Regarding the Nationals, the point really wasn't winning. It was about effort=success. Well, the tragic way in which that equation was distorted for me was horrendous. I have never dealt with something like that before. I remember messaging with Fenny last night. I told her: 'I am bitter, so very bitter, but I haven't given up.'
You don't have to go into 'hiding'. You know how much I treasure our friendship.
PS. What the hell you juxtaposing words like 'liaoZ', 'Acherly' with 'Evoke' and 'linguistic'?! Literature has really made you a mutant...

Seriously, that notion about 'it's the 1.5 years of experience that counts' has really gotten cliched. Althought I reluctantly admit that it's true after all, I'm more concerned about how that 1.5 years ended and how our next 50 years will be. Looking back, the 1.5 years ended on a very uncomfortable note .ie the unhappy incident during NCC. I mean, wtf?! Couldn't we just rest in peace?(puns not intended)
I'm glad you took everything ok. I tried too but couldn't. I was bordering between an E and an O7. I couldn't let go of the fact that I(and the rest) put in so much but...you know..Seriously, nothing is going right for me at the moment but still hanging on, albeit by one finger
Yes, I am proud of everyone's contribution to the team. That I know is unbelievable, the effort we put in. I will be coming down to help out once in a while. I acknowledge that some juniors deserve our assistance. But I'm doing it more for the CLUB rather than THEM. I don't know about alumni. I feel like leaving singapore(you know why..)for a while. But that means giving up you people and my way of life. So who knows what the future holds?

PS.Doing weights and running on alternate mondays(on the days without lit)

hey pplz, i tink i ought to put some stuff down in here but i dun reallie noe wat i can sae or wat i shld sae. let's see how i get into the mood lah...

first thing first, i feel tt canoeing life has come to an end. N i cannot let go yet. it's hard loh, reallie... n tough to let go of our heart n soul to conc on our studies now. it's like a piece of rope held in tension ( by a canoe?) for 1.5 yrs suddenly cut loose w/o any warning. n i'm feeling as slack as the rope wif no goal in life, n as lost as the canoe, no direction in mind. ( do i sound like i'm reciting a rythme??) everytime i go to class, i dun dread being exhausted frm previous trgs n falling asleep. but i do still doze off, n tt's frm being so sianz of an empty sch life wif no more canoeing. i dunno if many of u all feel like tt too, but i cannot seem to re-adjust myself at all. free afternoons n esp sunday todae were so funni, they seem so out of place. i onlie feel so uneasy n figety at home doing nth...

Sure, all the others sae tt we were strong n haf a gd chance, but i nv did reallie believe tt becos if dere eva was any real comparisons, u r the one tt reallie contributes towards our t2. not mi. i noe my limits n its useless not to come face to face with myself.remember how i was supposedly 'complacent' during the NCC tt dae b4 our race? well, i tink u feel so, but i wasn't.. serious. i was simply confident tt wif ur abilities, even if i can only exert a fraction of wat other t2 back rowers exert, u can still row us in first. i sae abt us not eating backwash was cos i knew u wld be able to get us to the front of the pack, i was 100% sure no-other t2 front rower in tt finals cld do tt. i'm not idealising u or saeing u r perfect, i'm not. but u reallie are strong enuff to take on the others, n can excel in other events if given the chance too. i told u b4 tt i nv had as gd a partner as u, cos u're the best. it's still true anyway. i was at first worried tt wif mi, we can go no way cos i'm gonna drag u down, but luckily, we managed to get thru wif the 2 most impt races of my life. i owe all dis to u, the glory n pride fer the team n all. but i dun deserved it cos i did nth. wld u accept my medal frm NCC n NS??? i tink u wun, n onlie feel tt i'm being stp, rite? i reallie believe tt if dere were ever two of u rowing in a t2, it's gonna be an invincible formation. can u feel the power u exert frm the back seat? i did, n it was incredible, u wun believe it. e same goes fer u when in the front. seriously, i feel lucky being able to pair up wif such a great partner cos anyone who pair up wif u will reallie come in first in t2 500, not juz mi. but i noe tt if left on my own, i'll probable be the onlie ger who cannot make it to the finals of NS.
well, i regret not trging harder... if not u wun haf so much trouble wif mi den. look at mi loh, so fat n useless... the guys call us the mix double, but i'm not reallie gd in the water at all, juz fer show only. u guys always sae i'm not doing anything in the t2 n u all pity xy cos she has to row fer 2 ppl. ok.. mabbe i tok rubbish here, it nv was said by anyone, but i agree loh. mabbe juz like mi, jon, u may feel tt u haf not bin a gd canoeist but i tink i'm worse den u. dun compare us by our achievements wif our partners, but look at us as individuals. can i balance in a k? i can't but u can. can i row a gd set in a single wif any gers on the team? i can't but u can (wif any guys). u r at least pia-ing hard frm wts but i'm not doing enuff fer xy frm wts though. cant u see the difference btw us? tok abt being lousy.... i'm worse.
lawrence, u may feel unjustified abt not being able to do a gd set for NS n NCC but at least understand tt u r capable to do so, seriously. cos like mi, u oso have a gd partner, n unlike mi, u r strong n powerful. u n ben haf always give wae to mi during trgs wif the boat, n i'm reallie sorry tt u nv had a chance to use it fer the semis in NS. after all, u went down wif a different boat u nv trained in, n tt i feel is my fault for it may turn out differently if u had used no 5. The cycle is bound to be affected in some wae, n i still feel i ought to account fer it. i admire u .. in the wae tt u train, n sharing the same seat in the same event reallie makes mi feel the vast difference bet u n mi as back rower. at least u haf the ability to do it.. powering ben but i did nth to help xy... n i haf myself to blame.. i guess, cos in the end i was more relieved den anything after crossing the ending-line.
yah, i regret one last thing, tt i had not gotten to know the wqhole team properly. i screwed things up by seldom joining u guys at the table n in the library. while fer gers, it wasn't tt bad, i'm so sorry to u guys. i mean, some guys out dere like linus n douglas n keith... sorry tt i had missed out getting to noe u all better while we had the chance to. so, i kinda regret hafing tt emptiness within mi frm the lack of interaction wif u all.. but generally, i tink i still do find some dist bet guys n mi generally. aiyah.. dun tink u all mind tt, but on a personal level, i feel bad for not treating u guys better.. though i wonder wat's ur 'definition' of better.

and i was still telling everybody that where ever we go, sure end up in kallang area one....dunno why like our favourite haunt for the past 1 1/2 yrs is kallang...

i survived it man~
my first saturdae alonE~

my apologies to all the gers whu went for the NDP community service thingie... heh... i felt very bad that i didnt go with u all in the end... but i juz felt that i needed to spend time alone... juz wanted to see how it feels to just be alone and not do anything in particular lor...
its not too bad reali... juz occupy myself lor... and sleep :)

i noe alot of girls are like still clinging on to the past... like.. cannot let go of everything yet... i feel the same way... just feels abit empty to suddenly have so much free time... but the fear of being alone HAS to be felt and conquered at some point or another lor..

i remember after NS i refused to touch my logbook at all...
my logbook, the printed out copies of the msgs on the msgboard, mental training book, the book compiled by mr yong... they were things that i even refused to LOOK at...i was so afraid of what i would feel just flipping through the pages.. smelling the sunblock on the pages...imaginig the scene at klssc...smelling the kallang water and sand... and looking through all the scribbles about training plans and evaluation of the day's training...
i was afraid that i would juz break down coz i was sure i havent gotten over training and just spending time with u guys yet..

but i finally did it today. my logbook and my file containing all the canoeing stuff was just staring into my face the whole afternoon... waiting to be read...
so i read it.. starting from my very first training till the day of the NS when i stopped writing into the logbook... i read all the speeches and debriefs that mr yong gave us... i felt a sense of amazing peace and comfort that we had achieved so much the past 1.5 years

and the irony of it all is that the NS was just a week ago.. ONE WEEK.. but to me it feels as tho it was weeks/months away... this was probably because i tried to forget all that happened last weekend fast... trying to erase the sad way that we ended our canoeing career...
but i realise that was something that i shdnt haf done, coz it would just come and haunt me sooner or later

then i read the past msgs on the msgboard before the NS
we were all so excited... we all made promises to the team... going to give our very best... and i believe that we all kept those promises...

i read this written by adrian a few days before NS.. and juz wanna say is that i reali hope u meant wat u said...

Hey Lawrence.....just read your message. Well you wanted to know how i coped with me being knocked out of the semis, so here goes.... Iguess it's normal that one would keep thinking about how he got knocked out. That's what happened to me. I kept thinking abt what had happened and what i did wrong. The race kept replaying in my mind.BUT i came to the conclusion that i made some mistakes while there were other stuff that happened that i simply could not control. I understand what you mean when you talk about not knowing whether you gave your best.
All i want to say to those who did not qualify or participateis that your greatest achievement was never going to come from the points you contribute to the team by getting into the finals, rather it was the 1.5 years you spent training with and pushing the team. THAT is the greatest contribution you made. I've made up my mind about a few things ever since the nationals ended.
Firstly, regardless of being in the finals or not, i know that i would be able to match up(not necessarily beat them) to any of the finalists on any given day. If there was anything i learned from my semis, it was that nobody was untouchable.Not david, not marvin, not shijia.
Secondly, i have decided that my canoeing career shall not end here. I would like to join the alumni in future.(i hope all of you will join me)
And lastly, yes i am going back to help the juniors.Through the push ups i have realised that though there may be a few black sheeps in the team, there are definitely people there who deserves to do well. That's why i am going back.

Finally, i would just like to say(i've said this b4 but i'll say it again) that it's been great training with all of you all this while.To Lawrence, i personally feel that one doesn't need to be remembered but rather, it is more important to remember the experiences that one has gone through.

Acherly I am very tired already. I had my Econs Mock Exams today and I think I have screwed up the paper again, out of four questions, I can only do 1 well, 1 okay and the other 2, what can I say? They are crappy! So not going to do well.

I guessed it must be that I stayed up till very late last night, typing the previous msg to Lawrence until 2 am. However, I did not regret not cramming in last minute. Well, how much can I memorise? How much can I regurgitate? No much I guessed. So what's the point? Might as well chat with you guys and relax abit, right? Hahaz!

Okay...Really this place is getting abit too quiet...so please liven up this place okay...where are the usual people? Yuzheng? Adrian? Dun tell me you guys got no time okay? That's not a good excuse! Well, just want to let you all know that I didn't take any of you all for granted. Really. I am really appreciative of all the efforts you people have put in.

Please! No isolation please! No self-confinement please! Such are torturous and I perfectly undertand them. Open up, and dun take the people around you for granted.

An appraisal -- Lawrence, 05:32:09 07/27/01 Fri
Hi boys and girls, looks like the message board is finally coming alive. I've come to add my two cents worth on one of the most momentuous happenings the past couple of days. This is gonna be pretty long. I'm going to write in a chronological way, coupled with addresses to various people and my thoughts and feelings.

I shall start very aptly on the Friday(if i recall correctly) before the Nationals. I remember we did boxing the day before during the training. It was also the training that Mr Yong gave us the pycnogenol. Ironically, I fell seriously ill on Friday. I had expected it, I had spent an absolutely terrible night. The prospect of racing with a sick body loomed large at me. I knew I had to keep calm and not panic. I felt terrible that morning and came to school late. I met Fletcher at the basketball court having PE. I literally forced myself to smile at him even though I was doubtful of making up the flight of stairs to the canteen. The fever worsened and the blood drained from my face. During break, I was making my way to the canteen when I thought of how I was letting My Yong and Ben down. The numbing feverishness anf these thoughts forced tears into my eyes. I barely made it to the table. I would like to thank those guys there(Adrian, Greg, Shien, Wenshun, Jon, Ben, Keith) for consoling me. I wasn't really tearing because I felt despair but because I felt really sick. Thanks Shien for volunteering to accompany me to the doctor's.
Eventually, I went myself. I could barely make my way out of the NJC main gate under the hot sun. I receive an SMS from Siti telling me the girls were there for me. I was really touched. Thanks Siti. I more or less recovered in half a day and made it still for the training, both on that day and on saturday.

On to the Nationals: Frankly, Ben and I had high hopes for the nationals even though we did not articulate it. I firmly believed that we had done our training and at least a place in the finals was deserving. I distinctly remember the common test week where Keith, Adrian and I trained for 6 days that week!(including weights with Mr Tan). It was the final push. How ironically, none of us were in the finals. Ben had trained 5 times. We were confident although not complacent( we realised we had strong opponents).
How on that fateful day, things turned out awry. I cannot forget our heats. The cycle was so high that we almost attempted a 500m take-off. Luckily or unluckily, we managed to qualify. I remeber telling Ben at the briefing, suddenly and quietly, that I was very angry with him. He gave his usually twitchy crest-fallen look. Frankly, I knew we were in trouble already. I was completely drained of any energy.(My back still ached from the boxing). I went to Adrian's house that night. I cooked up an excuse to bunk with him. It wasn't because I didn't want to go home(I actually wanted to because I needed a good sleep) but I wanted to keep him company. I was afraid that he couldn't take things anymore, I figured he needed someone to talk to, somewhat like a distraction. Keith and I went that night(Three of us again!)to Adrian's house. Adrian, I knew you cried that night because I could see your eyes were puffy in the morning.
I remembered I said lots of nonsense on IRC that night. I needed to change my mindset about the semis. I was dead afraid of complacency. I was trying to play mind games with myself. The next day, I knew things were not good. I had figured out that although Ben and I were 'good during trainings', we lacked the 'champion's mentality', the crucial killer instinct. Some girls gave me quizzical/scornful? looks that morning. I don't know why. I must thank Fenny for coming to the shore just as we were setting off for the startline. She patted us on the back and it was really reassuring. Thanks. In short, the race was a disaster. This time as it turned out, the cycle was too low and the transition was bad. Thus, we were stuck behind eating backwash. Mr Yong said that you are a winner if you have given your best. But how do you know you have given your best when the race ended even before you knew it. We in and out of backwash and water came into the boat.
When i came up on shore after the race, Daniel was there. He obviously was the race. He tried to put up a brave front and gave very encouraging remarks. Thanks Daniel. I was totally numb. I was numb until we went to watch 'Shaolin Soccer' after the 2nd day. In the movie, it seemed that winning was so trivial and the plot so romanticised and idealised, while I had the stark reality of defeat thrown into my face only hours ago. It was as if your arm was suddenly chopped off and the pain came later.
Ben, I don't blame you for what happened. If I appear silent sometimes, its probably me contemplating some universal truth *grin*. Actually, I blame myself for not being alert enough and to correct you. I know deep in me you push as hard, if not even harder, than I do.
I remember Greg saying that he had the luxury of 'playing' with his opponents on the bus after the movie. It really hurt me because it seemed that I was the one being played out. I missed the KAP bus-stop(change bus) with Jonathan and I alighted at Bukit Timah market. I didn't want to tell Jon about how I was feeling(terrible). I remember the satay bee hoon stall(my favourite) was closed. It seemed the whole world was in a murderous conspiracy against me. As I was walking out to the Shell petrol station, suddenly everything hit me. The team was in trouble and I had not helped matters by not qualifying for the finals. I remember the high hopes some of the guys piled on me and Ben. I remember the extreme indignation of battling fever to go for training and only to let everything to waste. I remember all the tears Mr Yong shed. It was barely more than I could take. I tried forcing my tears back, with every fibre in my body. I remembered all those who didn't qualify that day(keith Adrian Doug Wenshun Ben). I felt sorry, really sorry for them. I messaged all of them asking them how they were. Only Adrian replied. He and I kept up the messages until i struggled to the steps of KAP. The feeling of suppresing anger, resentment, envy, sadness was horrendous. Thanks Adrian for all those things you said. Thanks Xiuwen too for your support(she messaged me too). Mr Yong messaged me too telling me how proud he was of me. Frankly, I doubted those words. I was such a tragic disappointment.
That night, I asked myself what did I not do that I deserved this. I sincerely believed that I trained with everything I got. I had given up so much, so very much. I thought of Adrian and Keith(us again), I wondered how Keith was coping. I couldn't shed anymore tears. It was simply a second state of shock. I wondered how I was gonna get through the next day. That night too, I marked and wrote comments for every single juniors' self evaluation form. I don't know why I did that. I slept out of sheer mental exhaustion.
On the last day, I remember as one of the worst days I had ever lived. If there was anything worse than physicaly torture, it was mental torture. I remember I warmed up with Weiye, Fletcher, Greg and Shi'en that morning. Can you imagine the feeling of warming up for nothing while your friends are warming up for probably the biggest race of their lives? I told myself that I had to give my team-mates support.(I sincerely don't know how I came to that resolve) I was at the start-line for both the 1000m/500m races. It was a terrible feeling both inside and outside. Sheer mental torture and and sun was scorching.
After the 1000m races ended, I went up to shore and I must thank Fenny and Miaohua for telling me that they were grateful I was there at the startline. I had received no such compliment from anybody else, even Mr Yong. After the 500m finals, I did a 1000m set( for NCC) with Ben. It was a mixed feeling of some sort of release and yet regret. There was a girl(sounded like Weiying or Delphine) on shore cheering us on. It was me and Ben's 'testimony' race. I sincerely thank whoever that was. I was really touched. When I told Ben that I was ready to do another 1000 set, he complained his right shoulder ached. But I told him about 'bouncing back from a setback' and finally persuaded him by compromising on a 750m. Frankly, I was extremely disappointed with you, Ben. Where did all that resolve and courage go to? In the adrenalin rush, I had forgotten we were fallen heroes and our defeat only the day before. Frankly too, I was disappointed with Adrian too. He had hidden himself in the shed the whole day. Probably mulling over things. I wanted to tell you Adrian that I'm feeling just as bad and having something to do to distract yourself was probably the best thing. I remember Xinning telling me in her card she gave me that we lost because she had used the round ubin T2 for her race. Frankly, it didn't matter. But I appreciated your concern, really. I really felt for Zhihao too, who was such a great potential, that he was DQed.
That night at Fish and Co., it seemed that everything was alright. In the company of so many friends, I had forgotten my thoughts for a while. But I suddenly realised that I had something to fight for in the NCC T2 1000m. I remember Mr Yong messaged me that night telling me to concentrate on my races coming up on the next 2 days. He told me to 'whack' at the take-off. I told him it was a 1000m race. He told me to whack more in terms of effort. It seemed that he was insinuating that me and Ben didn't whack at the take-off and that we don't put in as much effort in the 500m races!
That morning, Mr Yong really scathed us with a barrage of scolding about not taking competition seriously. But fortunately, it didn't affect me. I always knew what Mr Yong said was for a good purpose and his intentions were clear. Even Greg agreed with me that even though he may have used the wrong methods thus resulting in unintentional side-effects, his intentionis were clear. Ben and I qualified for the finals, but only barely. Frankly, I was now in a withdrawal mode. I was so tired of rowing and I couldn't get the final over and done with. the chore of warming up for another potentially disastrous race really turned me off.
As things turned out, the final proved to be a disaster as well. We had a disaster start(at a diagonal angle). Again, it was my fault for not being alert enough. I thought the starter would be particular about the start since this was a final.
So there ended my career. At KFC that night eating all that unhealthy food, I felt that I was punishing myself with all that junk. Sitting at the 'loser's table', I envied with all my heart Greg, Shi'en, Linus, and even Daniel/Leetong and Weiye/Fletcher for coming in 1-2 for their event. Frankly, I was even sick of feeling sick and the mental strain was killing me softly. Indeed that greatest battle was not fought in the war but in the aftermath. I longed to go back to school and to put canoeing behind me.
Recalling that unhappy incident concerning Mr Yong, I think what Greg said that morning of the NCC finals was absolutely true. He may have put it in an unappropriate tone but I knew that he was hurt. He knew and I knew that we didn't talk ill of Mr Yong or whatever the rumour was. It simply wasn't true. Like I said, anyone with the slightest perception would be able to see that Mr Yong had always the clearest of intentions. Probably in the heat of the moment, some people may have said the wrong things. But hey, everyone makes mistakes and Mr Yong included. During lunch at cuppage the day before, I bitterly resented the fact that we were *still* discussing about Mr Yong. I detested even hearing one bit of that discussion(I sat with Fletcher and Xinjie).
I must really thank these two persons actually, and Greg too. They have really been my best pals in this 'crisis'. I felt that they understood(or at least tried to understand). Fletcher and Xinjie have this knack of sensing what your mood is.
Anyway, I'm very proud to say that I have gotten to know all of you people, especially the guys. I feel that after the nationals, we all became equals again. There was no comparison about who was the fastest or who won the most medals. What disturbed me was this rumour(may not be true) that the girls didn't think very highly of the guys. I really felt disappointed when, again rumour, that someone said Adrian didn't push hard enough(of all the people!). I believe that some of the girls may have looked down on those 7 guys who didn't qualify. I would have done the same too if our positions had been reversed. We're all human after all. But it was a hard pill to swallow. I can really tell everyone that I( and Ben) have given so much.
On Tuesday when school re-opened, we had the push-ups thing. I really felt disgusted about going. I was actually going to do push-ups with those juniors! Some of them even had the cheek to put down the seniors and speak behind our backs. After all we've done for them! the bags, the celebrations, the coaching, the self-evaluation forms! *sigh* Ultimately, I turned up because I knew Daniel would be there and if no one showed up, he'll probably get into more trouble(as if he hadn't sacrificed enough!). I was glad that quite a number of seniors turned up. It was our last bit for those juniors. That day, Mr Yong had been bugging me the whole day to keep his T2 medal and to share it with Ben. Frankly, I had no desire for any medal anymore.
I think some of us really need some time off to reflect and think, those who have won in NS and NCC have really done the whole team proud. Remember that with that medal comes that responsibility to come back to coach the junios since you will be the ones they look up too. As for me, I don't know how I will be remembered. Who will ever understand what all of us have been through?
I hope that all of us pick ourselves up again. That includes you, Adrian. Like what I told Mr Tan and Mr Yong, on hindsight, I think I've learnt more by losing than if I had won. I don't know what to think now, but whenever I look back at canoeing, it will always be the great moments and little triumphs, we've all gone through.

The tone of the messages recently sounded a bit sad. I think all of you have nothing to be sad about. You became the Round Ubin champions, the National Schs' Dragon Boat champions, the SDBF champions and the National Schs' Canoeing runner-ups, in just four months after getting thrashed at the SDBA Canoeing Championships. That easily makes your team, the greatest team that is, the greatest team that was and the greatest team that will ever be. Looking beyond results, everyone's attitude and commitment improved tremendously and the team miraculously became closer and more united. Every one had shown passion and fought hard. What more can you ask for? Can anyone tell me who in your team is not a hero or legend? Absolutely none. I am proud to say that I have learnt a lot from all of you. Furthermore, everything has not ended yet. With less time spent on training, this may even be the better time to develop your friendship.
For me, I have talked about 'defeat'. I feel that you have won hands down, but as a coach I had lost. I will always be proud of you no matter what's the outcome, as long as I know you have done your best. I CERTAINLY KNOW THAT. However, I cannot help (I know I shouldn't and don't have to, but I just can't help it) blaming myself for not being to lead you to what you richly deserved. I blamed myself, but I had never blamed you. I don't know why I feel so much closer to your team than the previous teams as well as the junior team. Maybe that's fate... and that has made me so eager to help you that I had made so many mistakes and caused so much unhappiness to the team. I certainly love the team and every individual in the team more than I could ever imagine.
My main worry now is your ability to transfer all that you have from canoeing to other aspects of your life. I believe that if you are able to do it, you will be able to live life to the fullest.

eversince those fateful events of the week ago.... our lives seem to have changed yet again....suddenly we have all reembarked on our seperate paths. i hope that its just because we had an overkill of each other and we can get back together very soon. i realli dun wish for everything to end like this..... please all those who read this, lets stay together for life. wat happened last week has been very cruel. everything that could have gone back went bad last week just like how lawerence had prophecised it would, i dun realli noe wat happened or how things happened but on weds thurs n fri , those were one of the worst days of my life. at times i felt destroyed everytime i looked at the events list. i could not believe wat was happening. but regardless of the result i think that we have realli come a long way. no excuses for that we did not finish wat we started. we were unable to , but no one is to blame. i have one request i noe how idiotic those jnrs are. how arrogant and selfrighteous and over anxious as well as overzealous. but they still do deserve help, because we had failed as snrs. so do help them. if not for them then the future of the club. coz if we leave them like this the club will be destroyed.i now noe how the snrs feel. actualli its different wat i feel but stil similar. our careers have come to an end but dun let our friendships and our love n loayalty for the clubcome to such and abrupt end, may it even not end. i hope to see all of u with alumni, with the crazy yihao n tecknam. i dunnoe wat to say now , soo many things are going tru my mind. even though i also felt tat i would happily retire after ns, now i dun think so.... i feel like continuing to paddle. paddling is something very different. that feeling on the water that feeling when the boat glides at such speed. i will forever miss the woshes and the debriefs the dinners and the sitting arnd and talking cock. you guys have made my miserable jc life interesting. it feels different now when i go n eat lunch and see no canoeists at the table a void is opening in my heart .....i am digressing like shit.... ok congrats all of us for completing our careers as njcanoeists let this not be the end.congrats to all those who have dun well. and to those who did not do that well coz of uncontrollables, dun let it affect you. dun let it destroy u or eat u all up. we still have the As.to adrian whom i noe has been very badly affected. come on man wake up pls... it realli hurts me to see u like this. honestly when i joined i realli wanted to be better than everyone else, but you were always there ahead of me u were the one i respected the most. i even looked up to u coz of how great u were. manypple dun realise how much u put in, but u opened up ur training to me.... i knew how much u worked i still remember all the trainings and the races, esp sdba. i never told u this but everything i was tired i always told myself that i cannot let u down beocz i was not good enough, i always told myself that i must push u. and u noe wat i manage to do that sometimes. i stil rememer wat u told me after the 16 km race when i wanted to give up k after the F****ED time trial. you told me not to give up you said that i had never given up before and i shouldnot start now. so now i say the same to you dun give up ... you meant for great things my fren maybe not as a kayakist but for other things in life.u carried me through tough times so now i hope to be able to do the same to u.i always believed in the poduct when i joined but now i have changed. the process matters, just when i told u i was happy even though we were kicked out in k2 1000m. i was not lying then to make u feel better .i meant it. i noe things have been cruel to u. get up n fight man. if u ever feel unfufilled and want to paddle again, and if u need a partner. i will always be here for u man. txwd forever. u noe ur a hero n legend in my books so is every one in the team. but u stand out. no one is as courageous n as driven as u . no one else does 9 500 acceleration /hollow sprints in a 45 min shift. i always tried to follow u but never reali could , except once be4 ns with zhihao. and that was the first time zhihao said he needed more rest. it was when he too realli saw wat u put urself tru. so get up n destroy them partner. dun get down remember wat we went tru the past 2 yrs. samegoes to all those who feel down about ns dun guys we gave it all that we could, and we could not have lost to better pple. the hc guys ( i dun noe about the gers) deserve it. moreover they are such nice guys. hahah esp that minjie, marvyn jeremy chanhao all of those nuts. they deserve our respect. i would like to say lastly that lets stay together forever !!

The Junior Team -- Daniel, 18:44:03 07/25/01 Wed
On wednesday some of the seniors were asking if the push-ups were compulsory. Some of you had your own reasons and could not turn up while others intended to skip it. I was sad when i noticed some seniors grumbling about their last training with the juniors before the weights session for the juniors ended. I decided to walk away and divert my attention to the juniors instead. When I saw Mr Tan taking the juniors single-handedly, I cried. I knew that it would be tough for him, Mr Yong and Mr Nasiman. Next year would be difficult on them. The titles we clinched for dragonboat and kayaking would be difficult for them to attain. I am not undermining their ability. I have never done that in my life. I am proud of the senior team for their achievements. But looking back at the junior team, i wished i could just live it one more time with them. After hearing what Mr Yong had said about bringning the best of from the juniors, I told myself that I would not mind making sacrifices for the juniors, even if I have to sacrifice even more as compared to the senior team. I am prepared.

The push-ups that you had done were actually punishments imposed on the seniors for coming late. We deserved it but yet some seniors tried to run away from it. I would not mind doing push-ups with the junior team because they are on their way to being a great team. If you are not willing to do these pushups for them, how do i expect you to come down when you are free to guide them?

When Mr Yong got the lukewarm response as he asked whether the juniors will be a great team, I cried. Although this is probably what he had planned, it is ok. Again i felt psyched up when Faizal asked if the team was prepared for greatness. After that I know nothing is going to hold me back.

Regardless of what happened, i think it's about time we put it behind us and come together once more like we've always have...... We are very grateful to you for what you have done for us. Personally, I am very touched by all the things you have done for the team, the club. Please do not blame yourself for the defeat. We have nobody to blame. We were just not happy because of the way you do certain things.
By now, you should have known that negative motivation does not work. It may be useful at first, when you first scolded us after the SDBA championships. However, it started getting on our nerves by the SDBF. We understand your intentions, and we know that you mean well and want nothing but the best for us. But it really feels like shit being put down by our teacher just before every race. You told meijie that you were not putting down anybody, but it's your tone which made us feel lousy. By the 2nd day of the National Schs, we were really tired of your 'speeches'. Did you mean to make us fight even harder after knowing our chances were that slim? Then you have insulted us. We knew that we had to fight hard no matter what. We did not need you to knock us on the head just before the semis. Instead, what you said that morning dampened our spirits even more.
After the finals, you told us that you were very proud of us, and it didn't matter to you that we didn't get the titles. I was very happy. My mind was free and easy then. But the next day, you became a tyrant again. I didn't know you took NCC as such an important race, that you told us not to see you if we could not get the title. I was disappointed again after you said that. I admitted that we were wrong to be late. But i did not understand why you have to be so angry. It was our 2nd last training already, did we have to finish our 'career' like this?
You said that you made a mistake. How did you judge whether you have commited a mistake? By whether we got the title anot? Is the title that important to you? You have already taught us that it is not important already, and you shld be proud that we are not sad. You have taught us well.
On the finals, there was this horrible confrontation in the morning. We were not trying to be rude, but we were trying to express to you and daniel how we felt. It was a terrible misunderstanding. We never meant to hurt anybody.
Lastly, i will like to make a suggestion. You may not like it, but i feel that i have to say it. Maybe you can refer to how the HC coaches coach? I dunno what is it that they are able to make their students trained hard and play hard at the same time. I think that we and our juniors will like to be able to do that too. I hope I have not offended you in any way.

The grim reality that we have lost the national schools only truly hit me a few days ago... On a personal level, I was really disappointed that I failed to perform in my own K2 event which I have spent the last one and a half years preparing for... As I lay down in bed late one night, a seemingly unending string of thoughts and emotions ran through my head... I was finally "enlightened" about the entire affair of the race... If this were a year ago, I would have blamed the defeat on everything and everyone else except myself; pointed the finger everywhere except here... However, this was not the case... I guess after going through all the trainings, pep talk sessions and interaction with the team and coaches, I'm finally beginning to grasp the fundamental concept and idea behind the truth of racing... It's not about how much stronger or faster we are compared to our opponents but how much stronger and faster we can go than ever before... I sincerely believe that everyone had given their very best in each of their races and certainly managed to defeat themselves at the end of it... It might be hard for some of us to accept that we didn't win or get a medal... In a bid to comfort ourselves and cushion our defeat, we come up with loads of reasons and excuses why we didn't perform as expected or aced the event like we hoped... I too was like that, until that very night I "woke up"... Some of us entered the races thinking we were great and that we were superior, figuring we could take this boat and that boat, but were disappointed in the end when we couldn't... We tell each other what we could have done to win, especially if the race was a very close one... However, sometimes we should give where credit is due and honour a better athlete: If we think we could have a better start, give credit to our opponents who were alert and focused enough to start the race well; if we think our maintenance could have improve, give credit to our opponents who were well-trained and able to execute a good maintenance; If we think we could have called for a last burst earlier, give credit to our opponents who had the foresight and mental strength to charge earlier than us; if we think we could have done much better had we not slipped or rocked at the last moment, give credit to our opponents who managed to stay strong and conscious enough even at the end to maintain grip and stability... Always remember before you grumble or complain about your poor performance, that there are among us, people who trained much harder, are more determined and focused, more diligent and certainly more deserving than us for success but due to misfortune and other unforeseen reasons, didn't make it as far as us, or wasn't even given a chance for a fair race... "For you reap what you sow..." I hope these individuals will not be discouraged or disheartened, but instead pick up the challenge and strive on... Ultimately, there will be the day when you can savour the fruits of your labour...
Lastly, I hope that this message board can be kept alive with new messages on a regular basis... Though I may not contribute much here, I certainly find delight in reading what each and everyone has to say... I'm sure everyone else feels the same way too... =)Training might have ended for most of us, but I sincerely wish that we will still be able to keep in contact with each other for a long long time to come...

(Like I said) When I saw the grim look on the Arsenal players' and manager's face when Arsenal lost the FA Cup final to Liverpool, I thought they were stupid because so many players/managers in the English League would willingly give up everything in their lives just to play/lead their team to the FA Cup Final. On top of that, Arsenal had played well enough to earn my respect.
On Thursday night, I finally understood how they felt. I knew that Hwa Chong was going to win the Double again. I was sick and tired of getting second already. I thought... oh no it's going to be five 'second' placings for NJC in NS in just three years. I thought I had given everything already. I tried to think whether if there were anything that the Hwa Chong coaches had done that I had not done... self-doubt and frustration slowly set in.
On Friday night, while I was on my way home from my wife's place, I began to evaluate and look for ways to improve things for the new season. (I can't afford to celebrate like all of you because I have to plan to fight another great battle.) I felt that my greatest mistake was that I started the 'real coaching' too late. We were too far behind in March already to make any real challenge to the NS title.
These are some of the changes that I would like make for the batch 2001-02:
Right after NCC the following must be carried out before the break to prepare for Promos,
1. Start whacking the team hard mentally to build up passion, discipine and mental toughness. It takes time to build up these things. Make them go through what I have put you through after SDBA Canoeing C'ships right from the beginning.
2. Work on the nutrition aspect and heavily emphasize the importance of a healthy and strong body.
3. Emphasize the importance of making personal sacrifices to be disciplined and keep up with their studies.
4. Cutting down on training after NCC ONLY down to 3 times to have at least 2 water trainings ie shift the start of high mileage training from Nov to Aug. The team will spend part of training time each training on balancing on k's and part of training time on building mileage in t's until they can do their mileage on k's.
5. Provide one-to-one technical coaching right from the beginning.
6. Bring back twice-a-weekly weights training but only on alternate weeks. Start off with light weights with v high repetitions to emphasize the importance of form to prevent injury.
7. Conduct regular fitness tests and time-trials to maintain focus in training.
8. Scout for volunteer coaches from graduated NJ canoeists to help out in coaching.

To be truthful, I am not confident about next year because of our small number and the limited talent in the team. But I am a fighter. I will fight with my heart and soul with what I am given, just like the same way that I fought against the comprehensive defeat we suffered in Mar at the hands of RJ & AC for boys and HC & RJ for girls. If we cannot come in first, we must come in second. I know that it is going to be very difficult, but if there is anything one in this world who is going to do it, it must no doubt be ME. There is no turning back for me. I am willing to pay a price to develop whoever NJ canoeists is willing into true principled, wise and happy fighers and into heroes and legends and as well as whichever NJ canoeing team into the most committed, the toughest and the most united team in A Div Canoeing history and the greatest canoeing team that is, the greatest canoeing team that was and the greatest canoeing team that will ever be.

I will do all that I can to make sure that NJ canoeists will not cry after any races ANYMORE... they will be crying so passionately every single day and every single training that their tears will have all dried up!

once again i'm here in the morning...
i dunno how it's going to be like later at nite...but i hope that watever the outcome, we will still be the HAPPY, PRINCIPLED and WISE fighters that we were...
NS is just something God has planned to strengthen us, to keep us closer together...and it's something that will lead us to something greater in the the future

no matter wat happens in the future, i will still be supporting u ppl, unless u all dun want this friend anymore...

I know many of you are greater and even braver fighters than me...yet fate being unfair as it is, you were not given a chance to fight till the end...Yet me, with luck shining at my face, one of the most cowardy person in the team, not any worthier in any sense, is given the chance to do what you people have been denied...I'm very sorry about that.

I'll do my best tomorrow, whatever it takes, to make NJC proud, even if the title is not won...

20th July. The day that everyone is waiting for. The Finals. Let's give it all out till nothing's left. There is nothing to hold back anymore. "If it's meant to be, it's up to me." This 'me' refers to every single one of us. We are our own enemy. We have to beat ourselves. Though the whole team will be cheering for each of us, it's up to the individual to fight it out with his/her own self. He/ She chooses to endure and fight the pain...or be defeated by the pain itself. The internal turmoil, the pain, the breathless feeling, the sore arms..nobody will be able to help us alleviate these pains...no one...we are on our own. Doing our best is all we can do, ever! If we have really done our best, we should be proud of ourselves. Cuz if u feel that you can still do better, that just goes to show that it's not your best! So c'MON and row hard for all our teammates who have fought hard throughout the last 2 days. Draw strength from everybody and go down with this combined strenth. If you believe in something hard enough...it might just become reality. So don't lose hope and fight on. If we don't grit our teeth and fight back, we'd never be able to forgive ourselves. I made a mistake in my last msg saying that our bark is worse than our bite. It's not. We are gonna show the world that our bite is worse than our bark. We, the underdogs are gonna be Alsatians and German Shepards. We'd snarl all the way before we sink our teeth in and give our opponents the BITE of their lives!

guys relax please.... its nobody's fault. wat happened just happened in the heat of the moment of the race, when ur tired and racing hearts out things go blur so did that bouy, its ok!!! its only a race.... guys please relax, make peace with urself. i managed to do it and i feel much better the race is inconsequential, winning is not all important. this is just a small set back.remember NS dragon boat we refused to give up refused to lay dead and did the impossible by getting the 1-2. so wat makes it impossible for us to do the impossible one more time. pple wrote us off a long time ago. today we showed alittle of wat we are made of. but with this new set back they must be laffing again. saying its over for us. but ITS NEVER OVER> THE END IS WHERE AND WHEN U WANT IT TO BE if u want it now we can just roll over and play did or we can bounce back and fight even harder like we always do! lets cement ourselves as the comeback kids!!!!! i always had faith in u guys and i refuse to lose it now. remember no pressure u have all done ur best,but during the race its not just frankie to think about, theres also adrian. dun give up if ur tired, fight on we can do it just once more must be come back from the trolls of defeat ! bei shui yu zang

i remember wat u said after the 16 km race after the k1 time trial that day when i capsized and did terribly. i told u that i could not take it animore and wanted to give it up. but then u told me to think twice, you said that i had never given up in anithing and i should not start now.also just after the 16km race once i crossed the line, u came up to me and said u always knew i could do it. u also had supreme faith in me thanx man. now its my turn to do something for u, my races are for u and frankie man. i am not going to let u down,i will make things rite for u. rememberi still wanna row k2 with u so dun u run away with frankie hor!! txwd forever !!!

well.. guess that whatever happened today was very unfortunate.. of course nobody wanted it to happen..but it did..ultimately, we have suffered a great setback,we are down but we are not out..just hope that everybody will learn from this and move on and that everyone can still give their best and whatever happens after that happened..we will have no regrets.
