• This week's EOTW: THE SIXTH JUROR.... -- mkim, 21:03:29 03/14/08 Fri
  First off, I have to apologize. I thought I had this episode recorded when I agreed to do the questions, and I don’t. I have all of the others, I think I was so aggravated after the kiss at the end of Automatic for the People that I didn’t record it.(At that point I was thinking, “what next?”)
  
  Sooo I just read all the synopsis and JAG review that I could find, and tried to jog my memory as much as I could. I watched this once, and I believe that is it. If anyone has a question I havent thought of, or dialogue to analyze, please include it in your post.
  
  
  This episode deals with the prosecution and defense of PO Foyle accused of the murder of a civilian, Ben Hewitt. Both men where entangled in a love traingle and under the ‘spell’ of Lt. Eve Sorrens. Mac and Harm, along with PO Coates were dispatched to sunny Naval Air Station Key West to try the casse.
  
  1) On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate this episode and why?
  
  2)Do you think the premise of PO Coates becoming ‘the sixth juror’ is believable, we know this is ‘REEL’ life, not real life…but was this realistic enough to draw you in to the case. You know…that suspension of disbelief…or is it belief??? LOL.
  
  3)There have been episodes that had cases whose resolution was at least predictable, was this the case with this episode? What surprised you most? (besides Coates arguing with PO Smathers, from the jury box)
  
  4)What is your opinion of Lt. Eve Sorrens? Do you think there are many ‘Eve’s” out there serving in the military or in the workplace?
  
  5)The setting of Key West was perfect for a Harm and Mac shipper moment, did anyone see anything that could have brought them closer, in their interactions during this episode?
  
  6)This is just for fun and more for shippers than anyone else. Given that this episode followed “Automatic for the People”. Do you think the whole episode might have been seen differently if AFTP hadn’t aired between The Four Percent Solution and The Sixth Juror?
  
  (Personally, I could have done without “Automatic for the People” except for the fact that ‘Oscar’ looked an awful lot like manette’s lifesize ‘Harm’. That visited all the JAGfests and Harmy meets.(smile)

    • I honestly don’t remember all that much from this episode. Even looking at the screen caps, I only remember the basics of the case. I have the episode recorded, but have never gone back to watch it again. I don’t remember the case being all that exciting. I do remember wanting more H&M alone time.   • I rate this episode a 5.0 for as much as I can remember of it and that is hardly anything at all when it comes to the full-on plot. For the answer to the other questions, I must first give my profuse apologies to all the hard-core JAG fans, because I have to admit, in these last episodes, I was so turned off, I didn't watch them as intensely as I should have.     • I remember that there were comments about Harm's appearance during this time of Season 10. I didnt care for the orange shirt, untucked...it made me long for the good old bad days when he was wearing those jeans and grey v neck sweater.(sigh) HAE was in excellent shape then. He was training for the Iron Man, so he was no couch potato sitting around in his off time, whch might explain his looking tired.           • All very good points you make re: a whole new series and a reunion movie -- especially when you bring up that DPB would almost HAVE to be involved in a big project like either one of those. But I'm REALLY liking the idea of an NCIS episode or two with H&M the focus and I'm loving the Jonathon and Jennifer Hart comparison.     • I've always wondered what sequence the episodes where filmed in. It just seemed that AFTP didnt fit there. But in all fairness, I had a chip on my shoulder by that time. In hindsight, I dont think tptb were as 'evil' as I thought they were, after all, they gave us Harm in the first place....but, you'd think the shippers could have had February through the end of April, even if JAG STD were on the horizon.         • The rumor was that the sequence around 4% was scrambled due to the 'leak' about Webb coming back to life in the season 10 opener. I know its already been said, but the season would have made so much more sense if we'd seen all of Hail and Farewell's scene between Harm and Mac and seen the visit with Cmdr McCool when it actually happened.   • I guess I rate this somewhere in the middle. It wasn't that great, but it wasn't horrible either. 2) I guess I didn't really have much of a problem with her being selected. Of course it was unrealistic, but TPTB expected us to believe it in order for the storyline to work, so I went along with it. I don't remember much about this one, but I'll try.   • First, thanks mkim for the discussion post. I appreciate your help when I'm out of town. Second, I haven't read all the posts, so my thoughts may be repetititive. I enjoyed this episode, but I was disgusted that Mac was out on the town in tropical Florida with Coates. She & Harm should have been enjoyed the night-life together.   I saw this article today about Cindy Ambuehl. The JAG parts of the story are brief but interesting. Especially the part where she says she was only supposed to be on JAG for three weeks. I wonder when they made the decision to keep her on for years instead.

    • I thought she was EXTREMELY comical -- well, more like 'cartoonish'. She was ditzy, then sappy, then OTP 'sexy' (which I never thought she really was -- she was TOO plastic and glossed-up to be sexy -- almost ikky) that, for the Harm character, she was absolutely, certifiably, a joke. I still say her OTP sexy other woman role was kept in so as to not put someone in who could've been a real threat to Mac (like that Alicia Montes character) and also to assure audiences that Harm was gettin 'it' and wasn't gay.   • The article said she left JAG when she was 8 months pregnant. Boy, I never noticed. I do remember when Harm had a visual of everyone being pregnant and she was there for a split second, but that was well after she actually left the show. Maybe that is what she meant. I also love the look on Harm's face when Mac tells him she got the ammo substitution idea from a movie, LOL. That was JAG at it's best...we were so close, argh!     • I agree, doc. That period (and the year before Harm returned to flying) was the best of JAG, IMO. What stinks (beside the gorilla) is that even if said gorilla didn’t want to bring them together as a couple until the end of the series, why drive them apart? Some of us have compared H&M to the dynamic of Booth and Bones. I love the closeness between those two characters, too. Love how they end each episode with the two of them hanging out. If we had just seen more of that camaraderie and closeness with H&M in the last years, I could’ve handled them not getting together romantically.       • They drove them apart because they didn't know how to WRITE a close friendship well. Especially without that Genius R. Scott Gimmell leading the way. And heaven forbid if they made H&M close then they might get piles of mail telling them to push H&M "all the way". • Question - If Harm's father had not gone down in Vietnam but returned and had a career in the Navy would Harm have still entered the acadamy or would he have done something else? -- usmgrad, 23:07:54 03/08/08 Sat
  The reason for my question is something Sturgis told Bobbi Latham in I think The Mission. When asked why the navy he said becasue it was what his father wanted for him. It got me to thinking about Harm. Did he go into the Navy because he thought that's what his father would have wanted? Or was it what he wanted? Would that have been different if his father had been around? If Harm had been a 'navy brat' for 20+ years would he have still gone into the navy? What do you think?

  • Wow, that's quite a question. I think the answer to that would have a lot to do with his relationship with his father as he grew up. If they had a close relationship and Harm grew up respecting his father and what he did, I think he would have wanted to 'follow in his father's footsteps'.     • Harm loved flying, not just F14s but his grandfather's little Stearman. If Harm Sr. had fostered that love at an early age, so I believe he would still have joined the Navy. Where else could he have combined a desire to fly fighter jets with a love of the sea? And where else do they have such cool uniforms....LOL. As for the law, many...perhaps most of us change careers at least once in a lifetime. The JAG corp allowed Harm to serve in a different way.   • What a great question. I'm inclined to think that it is possible that Harm would have chosen the Navy even if his father hadn't been shot down. He was third generation, and it was somewhat of a family calling, so to speak. I also agree with the above statement that it could have been influenced by the relationship he and his dad would have had.   • I think Harm would still have gone into the Navy, but as a different type of person. He wouldn't have had all of the unanswered questions practically his entire life. Harm would have had far fewer emotional issues, and maybe even married Diane. I think he'd have been a happier person. I don't think he went into the Navy just to find the answers about his father - other options may have been more effective. He loved the fast jets...the law was his second choice. • Episode of the Week – Shifting Sands -- Araninda, 22:01:27 03/06/08 Thu
  Our EOTW is the second episode of Season 9, "Shifting Sands”. When a female petty officer thought to be MIA is found by U.S. troops in Iraq living as the wife of a Bedouin sheik, Mac is assigned to defend her on the charge of desertion. Harm learns he cannot return to JAG. His resignation papers have been processed and he is now a civilian. Tiner leaves JAG and Coates becomes the Admiral’s yeoman. Harm is offered a job with the CIA. In the last scene, Mac overhears Harm, Clayton Webb and Catherine Gale talking about Harm joining the CIA.
  
  1) How do you rate this episode and why?
  
  2) What is your opinion of AJ’s actions in this episode? Should he have allowed Harm to return to JAG? AJ tells Harm that he is fed up with Harm’s “lack of dependability, not being a team player, and being ruled by emotions”. Was AJ’s assessment of Harm justified?
  
  3) Was Mac a “pod person” in this episode? Should she have been more sympathetic toward Harm's professional situation and his feelings? Should she have protested more vigorously AJ’s actions in not allowing Harm to return? Why did she participate in the whispering scene with Webb at the hospital with Harm present?
  
  4) One of the most poignant scenes in the series occurred in this episode as Harm sits alone in his apartment playing his guitar and thinking of the people at JAG. What were Harm’s emotions at that moment?
  
  5) Why did Harm accept the CIA job? He still was a licensed attorney, so he could have practiced law in another capacity such as private practice, by joining a firm, some type of government law, etc. Why did he not do so?
  
  6) At the end of the episode, Mac overhears Harm, Webb and Catherine Gale talking about Harm joining the CIA. Rather than enter the room, Mac listens outside, then walks away. What were Mac’s thoughts as she walked away?

    • I understand what you're saying, Cece. But I think AJ's concerns should have been what was best for the Navy, not what was best for Harm. And it was best for the Navy that Harm stay in.   • I'll rate this one a 2. This episode was a nightmare. It was downright painful to watch. I understand where Cece and doc are coming from and I would agree if they hadnt had AJ go back on everything he was trying to say later on in "Back in the Saddle" It just made AJ look like a old grrouch who had to go to Harm with his hat in his hand because he needed his help(when Imes got into trouble) It made both men look petty, and that is not what I wanted to see. Harm in his apartment, thinking of all the women in his life, with Mac being the one he seemed more focused on AND the other being when Mac was leaving the hospital, after hearing Webb welcome Harm to the 'brotherhood' I thought she looked so upset that she and Harm would surely talk to each other, but the writers saw it another way, and the shippers had nearly another 2 years to suffer through. I might be rusty on my timelines, but they Kissed on the dock and then two years later was the ferry scene, and two years later was the porch, and two years later was Paraguay, the show was on it's last leg so they had less then two years between Paraguay and the Dining Out, but it probably would have been a two year cycle if they'd planned on keeping David on.         • I remember feeling just that way, and I can go back there again, if I don't consider what I had heard about what was going on behind the scenes. I know none of us will ever really know for sure, but IMHO as Pas De Deux, the diaogue was mean spirited and had a double meaning. AJ was kick ass...with Harm and every one else, but this went just a step beyond. They'd gone through too many personal things together for it to end like it did.   • All I can say is ignorance is bliss. I have no idea what all are talking about re: contract disputes and writing David out and behind the scenes and I don't want to know. I still think JAG was such a good show and I'm glad I still haven't seen all the eps yet and my godson just bought and sent me the DVD of Season 2 which I will sit and watch as soon as I get my DVD player working. I do know one thing, though-- if Harm would've been shot off or retired off the show or Harm and Mac would not have gotten together, I probably would have stopped watching.   • This is just another of the awful episodes that TPTB forced upon us before we got redemption. Yes, Harm needed to adjust his perspective on life somewhat, but what an awful way to go about it! • HELP! Can someone help me clarify the Zulu times in FWFS? When Mac is standing in Harm's doorway it is 0124 Zulu , then the next time is Harm walking into 'McMurphy's' which is 0410 . Can someone tell me what times we're talking about. -- NancyR., 22:23:21 03/03/08 Mon

    • Well, except that in late April, Washington DC would have been on daylight savings time, so you subtract 4 hours. She arrived at Harm's at 9:24 pm and walked into McMurphy's at 10 minutes past midnight. IMO, the writers were thinking about Pacific Time, which would have been earlier, and not Eastern Time, because it just didn't seem that late, especially at McMurphys.
