• The Chief (formerly known as Heather back in the old days, found a Best of HB cd that judi put together in 2004. -- Cece, 23:48:25 04/22/14 Tue
  There are some great posts, and Chief wanted to trip down memory lane, (see her post a few down.) It's wonderful we still have great HB posterrs. Sadly, her cd wiped out all of a sudden, I dug out mine and it is fine and dandy. Chief asked me to post the origin of Harm's alter-ego (ahem...), HE, to go along with the rather inappropriate CW (Commander Winkie.) I'm posting her original post along with the responses below. I must admit to being proud of my sudden inspiration playing off Chief's (Heather's) post.

  Hey, Ladies (and gents?)- I had to tell you this. The tv section of our local paper has proclaimed tonight's final Regis-Hosted episode of "Millionare" to be "the end of and era."
  
  HUH??
  
  How long was that show on? 2 years? MAYBE 3?
  
  So what will they call it when JAG airs it's final ep (after 8-10 years)? The end of a geologic age?
  
  Children in 2102 will hear this in their social science classes: "The late 1990's through early 2000's is known to current scholars in the antique television field as 'The JAGaceous Period.'"

  Recently someone lamented the loss of all the great and wonderful posts that made the HarmyBoard what it was then and set the standard for the years to follow. The post below about the old video reminded me of other wonderful videos that were made by HB-ers LONG before YouTube. I knew I had some of them on CDs somewhere, so I went digging in my old filing cabinet.
  
  At one point, Our founder and Top Banana, Judi, and her faithful sidekick, Cece, started collecting these gems and the milestone posts that became part of our lingo here on the HB. The collection was saved to CD and sent out to some of the original members.
  
  That CD is what I found tonight.
  
  So in the spirit of nostalgia and education, I will try to post one text-based item a week (or thereabouts) until I've run out of files on the disk. (The videos will have to be uploaded to YouTube first and will not be that great quality, and I will see permission from the creators of those videos before I do anything like that.) So from Meat Trays to the Manly Arms, from "Shuddering Shippers" to the 50,000th post, this walk down memory lane should help relive some great memories and explain some of our craziness to those who haven't been around as long.
  
  So.... Without further ado, here is a great place to start with this retrospective look at the HB. It doesn't say who wrote it, but enjoy!!
  
  Ode To "All Things Harm" Day
  July 30, 2003
  
  'Twas a Harmy Board Wednesday and oh, what a treat!
  We drooled over Harm from his head to his feet.
  
  His eyes! That leg! That smile and those arms!
  We discussed and debated his unending charms.
  
  A quick glimpse of navel kept us busy for days,
  While that rarely-seen clavicle started a craze.
  
  Our posts could be sweet or a little bit kinky;
  Some talked at length of a Commander named "Winkie."
  
  Do we like baby Harm with long porno hair?
  And most important of all -- what should he wear?
  
  Black shirt or blue? How 'bout tight-fitting jeans?
  Boxers and Jammies make for wonderful scenes...
  
  Are dress whites and wings overrated? No way!
  We'll take him in uniform any old day.
  
  There's more to Harm than appearance, it's true;
  So we spoke of his brain and his character, too.
  
  But it didn't take long to return to this thought:
  In clothes or out of them, Harmy is HOT!
  
  As the sun set that day on each city and farm,
  We hoped we'd soon have another day full of Harm!

  Just wondering if anybody would be interested in "re-viewing" all ten years, starting with ep. 1. I know this has been done before, but that was a few years ago and we were all, I think, still all very hyped over the way the series ended and that helped color and shape the discussions.
  
  Reason I am asking: I just spent a couple of weeks re-viewing all ten years (I have the complete DVD set--yeah!) and I found a certain detachment was present this time around that wasn't there when the series first aired--and still some of the eps had a powerful impact. The two eps I skipped over dealt with Paraguay--that's still painful, even knowing everything turns out well--to view. I was just curious, especially after clicking over to the "review" section, if anybody else wants to "trip down memory lane". A certain distance in time might generate a more "objective" (and less "heat") and quite possibly add some richness to the community (which I have missed, darned it anyway.)
  
  I'm thinking, if anybody is interested, we could suggest viewing the "episode of the week" sometime during the week and then open up the discussion on the weekends. Not sure how that would work, but I think going back over things--and contributing from the wonderful fan fiction that has been inspired--would add some excitement and who knows! new insights, too.

  • I posted the EOTW for years. It was fun, but interest waned because people didn't have time or the DVDs to rewatch the episodes. Also comments were made that there wasn't much new to discuss & they were not interested in discussing episodes or scenes that had been hashed over & over on the board. A year or so ago, I tried posting episode video clips to try to get discussions going again. But there just wasn't many people who wanted to watch the clips & post comments. The EOTW takes a lot of work each week. It is disheartening when there isn't much discussion. But I don't want to discourage you.   I love the discussion going on below and I hate to "interrupt" this; however, there's a couple more questions I'm throwing out there for general discussion.
  
  I just spent a very early morning two hours (more-or-less) reviewing "Ice Queen/Meltdown" taking copious notes. And I've got a couple of observations to make:
  
  After all this time, it's relatively "easy" to maintain some detachment for most episodes, even the ones that are most gut-wretching for shipper fans. And I've been "re-viewing" those two specific eps in great detail. First off-the-cuff observation: even from a somewhat-detached POV, the writers were able to write the script in such a way to deliver maximum emotional impact. However, in doing so, they wrote more innuendo and implication than clarity. It was never certain to me, after watching those two eps for the first time, just why Gibbs had doubts as trial was approaching. And, by the way, I know there's been all kinds of estimations about how much time Harm spent sitting in a cell, from two weeks on out. Here, at least, the writers were clearer when Faith Coleman asks Harm why he didn't tell his story to NCIS "six weeks ago" when he relayed his story to her. I understand just why that little detail got lost for all kinds of reasons. I also know Faith Coleman has gotten kind of a bum rap in fan fiction; however, looking at these two eps, she's gotten an unfair rap. (It's all that "squared-away-ed-ness" [I know--I just made up that word, but I think you catch my drift.] that captured the most attention. However, after looking at it in exquisite detail, Major McBurney is a lousy prosecutor. Between the awfulness of McBurney's prosecution AND Gibbs' doubts--and the "rush-to-judgement", Harm got off.
  
  Opinions on these two eps, anyone??
  
  And if you have access to "Bridging the Gulf" in late Season 9/early season 10 [those two seasons kinda blend together for me), there is a scene about halfways, maybe more, where I swear Harm was holding a burning cigar. I promise, I will take another look at that but does anyone else see it, too--or am I just imagining things??

  • I haven't watched those eps since they were on, so I don't remember much except the faceless body of "Singer" in Ducky's morgue, and Harm smacking the two-way mirror in anger and frustration, knowing Gibbs was on the other side. They were real emotional eps for us JAG fans, and the production style really enhanced the cognitive dissonance. I wonder if the eps on the DVDs were "edited" in any way, compared to the original.   I just spent the last two weeks on and off reviewing all ten seasons (I have the complete DVD set, thank goodness!--recommended course of action, by the way for any number of reasons) and at least one question has cropped up in my mind: When and where did fan fiction get the idea Harriet and Bud were perpetual matchmakers between Harm and Mac, anyway?? Harriet was ecstatic over Mac's impending wedding to Mic, and Bud seemed to be genuinely happy about the relationship between Clay and Mac. If there was a real "disconnect" between the series and fan fiction, I think it's on that very topic. Stories have been written about Harm's grandmother--and I personally think those stories have more basis "in fact" than does Harriet's matchmaking efforts. And I'm truly mystified by this notion.
  
  Status report; turns out I have to do a little research before I can really get into a new story I'm producing, so be patient. I'm looking for a better-paying job in addition to caring for my elderly mother, so just hang in there. And contributions, one way or the other on the above topic will influence some minor aspects of the storyline I'm working on. (Kinda hashing out some of the details as well.)
  
  Thanks to one and all. Will be "bopping" in and out today--I hate, positively hate the time changes: screws up both Mom and I considerably and takes some time to adjust.

  • I think Harriet wanted to see them paired off, though not necessarily with each other. She was the one who showed Dalton to Mac after she was back at JAG, and she tried to matchmake her with a lobbyist in "Rogue" in season 5. She was thrilled with Mac's engagement to Mic, and she and Bud were going to be Matron of Honor and Best Man at the wedding. She and Renee had a girl's night while Bud and Mic went drinking when Harm and Mac were out of town together. The only time Harriet and Bud were excited for Harm and Mac was at McMurphy's in FWFS.   • I think a lot of fic is written to satisfy the reader who wanted to see Harriet and Bud encourage Harm and Mac. It never really happened.     • I agree that McKenzie is an unlikely Native American name. Most often, when NAs took Western names, they used common first names, like the famous Chief Dan George. I don't know if that was a hard and fast rule though. What annoyed me about JAG was the casual mention of something important about a character's background or family, and then dropping it. e.g. Bud's (?) sister, Winnie.   Isn't that the best way to find things? I had never heard the word "trope" before, but apparently it's a literary term for something between a theme/motif and a cliche. There is a huge site dedicated to tropes in TV and other media. "JAG" even has its own page!

  I haven't been around here in a while and when I brought up the board today, I was amazed to see how busy and fun it still is. That's a testament to Araninda who has done a fabulous job. This board has been around since November 17, 2001 and it's still going strong. Of course the subject matter helps but it takes a special person to keep it going.

  Was listening to the radio today and heard an interview with Shane Osborn - the Navy pilot whose spy plane was shot at and he landed successfully in China. This was the real-life story that the two-part episode Dog Robber was based on.
  
  I never really knew that the episode was based on a real story, so to hear him introduced as that was a very cool surprise! Osborn is running for Senate in Nebraska. Thought some of you might want to read about him. Here's the link.
