Episode of the Week – War Stories -- Araninda, 01:36:47 10/09/09 Fri
Our EOTW is Season 4’s "War Stories”. When three U.N. peacekeepers are taken hostage in Kosovo, a SEAL team is sent to rescue them before the end of a 24-hour deadline set by the terrorists. But when heavy ground fog delays the SEAL team by 30 minutes, the hostages are found dead and the team leader, Commander Resnicki, is blamed for their deaths. Mac and Bud defend Resnicki, but the Commander has no confidence in Bud’s skills and wants him removed from the case. Meanwhile, AJ spends his vacation as technical advisor on a movie about the Navy and runs afoul of the Hollywood types who hired him. Harm serves as acting JAG in AJ’s absence.

1) How do you rate this episode and why?

2) Harriett and Bud comment on Harm’s performance as acting JAG, saying he "seems older, more experienced.” But in a confrontation with Mac over the case, she lashes at Harm and says: "Put you in a position of power and you become just as political as everyone else.”     If Harm were named as the permanent Judge Advocate General at some point in his career, what kind of leader would he be? Would he be able to play the political games? Would he personally be happy in this position? And, would the series have worked with Harm as the JAG in Season 10?

3) Harm says to Mac: "You had no intention of following my advice. Why’d you ask for it?” Then, at the end of this confrontation between Mac and Harm, she says "excuse me” and abruptly leaves Harm's office. Harm watches her leave, but doesn’t try to stop her.     Should Mac have been more respectful of Harm’s position as the acting JAG? Did she have a poor defense strategy in trying to shift the blame to Resnicki’s superior?     AJ later excuses Mac’s actions by saying to Harm that "the Major’s been through a fair amount of trauma in her life recently.” Did AJ hold Mac to a lesser work performance standard than other members of his staff? .

4) When Harm goes to AJ’s house for advice, he finds the movie actress there and says to AJ: "It’s a side of you I’m unfamiliar with.”     How did AJ relate to women? Was he aggressive or passive in pursuing women? Was he seeking companionship, a sexual relationship, a lasting commitment, all of these or none of these?

5) AJ tells Harm: "I support my people, the rest is up to them” and then gives Harm this advice: "You got to decide what’s in the best interest of the case: Defending your authority or the choices of those who defy it.”     How do these statements apply to AJ throughout the series, especially in the later seasons?

6) Questions I can’t help but wonder about this episode: Why didn’t AJ pursue worthwhile interests or visit his daughter during his vacation instead of moping around his house?     Why didn’t Bud & Harriett try to find out what AJ’s full name was before announcing plans to name the baby after him?     Harm suggested naming the baby after Naval heroes and rejected naming it Harmon. So, if Harm and his wife (whoever you believe that to be) had a son, would they name it after a military hero, would they name it after Harm, or would they name it something entirely different?

Just mention Paraguay and you can get a whole lot of discussion--some heated--going among any gathering of JAG fans. I believe I came up with a question that hasn't been hashed out yet:

Which was more shocking for long-term fans during the Paraguay fiasco: The Admiral's processing of Harm's resignation--and his comments in that infamous office scene--OR Mac's declaration that a relationship between the two of them would "Never" work out? And why was one more shocking over the other?

To get the discussion going: I think the professional writers thought Mac's declaration was probably more shocking simply because it was the cliffhanger ending for that one episode whereas the office scene in "Shifting Sands" (I think) was embedded in the actual episode.

Comments? Thoughts? Opinions?

Why: at that point, we knew HAE had signed a new contract (otherwise he would have been killed in the plane crash).     - Your CO is your leader, your manager; sometimes your supervisor and or your your mentor He may or may not be your personal "hero." He is NOT your friend or your dad. AJ fraternized with his staff, used and misused them, held them back from being competitive for promotion, and overall permitted a non-professional atmosphere.       - Part of it was "creative license", and part of it, I think, was AJ's desire for a family. He found the son he never had in Harm (I can imagine AJ saying "I used to be like you" to Harm, the same way Harm said it to Buxton), and I think AJ enjoyed being a part of all their lives.   - I don't see a lot of similarities with Mac leaving. Harm left because he wanted to do something that Chegwidden wouldn't let him do -- deliberately challenging his authority. Letting Harm come back and revoke his resignation like nothing had happened would have set an awful precedent for Chegwidden. Would Harm try to pull the same thing the next time they disagreed?       - Even though I didn't like parts of that season, it made sense to me as a path for his character. I think Harm was always intended to be a flawed hero (like the Greek heroes), but it took a long time for the consequences of his independent nature to catch up with him. (I always imagined that the series would end with his death, and that it would be justified.) - I was more shocked by the AJ storyline than by Mac's 'never'. It caricaturized the AJ/Harm relationship and brought the weakenesses of both characters, which the audience already knew and accepted, to extreme and disappointing levels. I felt that truly took away from the series and it smacked of 'background squabbles off set'. It all left a sour taste in my mouth, even after TPTB 'redeemed' it a bit with AJ re-instating Harm, etc. etc. Mac's never was a pain, but I knew they were still trying to drag out the HM storyline to ad nauseaum...inside -- mj, 04:43:38 10/05/09 Mon

- I'll admit the one that worried me the most was the Never-- while watching I felt a real pang of doubt that we would ever get anything meaningful again. With the AJ- I don't know why but it felt like another way to let Harm go be a hero in another venue-- and he was of course. But as several lska pointed out-- it was the writers that kept him heroic- and it was the writers that brought him back to JAG-- it didn't make sense for the main character-the hero- not to be where the rest of the regular characters lived for any amount of time.     - I really tried and still do to leave the behind the scenes stuff out of my reactions to the episodes. I watched for Harm and the ship-- but the show could go on-horribly, unbearably, boringly from my POV-- with Harm and Mac deciding things wouldn't work.   - I overall agree with Manette. I watched for the H&M ship, for the rest of the ensemble cast, for the plots -after all, it was my RL! Some of the cases portrayed were thinly disguised real life military or court-martial cases, either Navy or the other Services. I figured Harm would be back after his CIA detour, much as he was brought back after his return to 'flyboy;' and I figured the ebb and flow of the dance would resume. - I saw them May 2008 at Andrews AFB in Washington, DC - twice - it is an awsome show. Last spring we were in Pensacola when they were performing over the beach. We were too far away to see the show but were able to see the "set-up" and disban for each pass. That was almost as cool as the show. If you get a chance go see them! Episode of the Week – Chains of Command -- Araninda, 00:24:39 10/03/09 Sat
Sorry for the delay in posting the EOTW. This week we are focusing on Season 3’s "Chains of Command.” After an admitted mistake, a carrier air-traffic controller claims a sex-for-leniency offer was made by a superior, Master Chief Sullivan, from Season 2’s “Crossing the Line.” Harm and Mac prosecute Sullivan and are pitted against Mac’s boyfriend, Dalton Lowne. As the trial progresses, Mac discovers that Lowne has copied private information from her case file and she ends their relationship. The final scene, IMO, is one of the best scenes of the entire series, with Harm, Mac and Bud at McMurphy’s and singing “What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted”.

1) How do you rate this episode and why? Since Master Chief Sullivan had been involved with their sexual harassment investigation in "Crossing the Line”, why hadn’t Harm and Mac previously learned of Sullivan’s sex-for-leniency conduct? Was Mac prejudiced against Sullivan or was she truthful in telling him that she “had no axe to grind”?

2) Mac tries to reassure AJ that there will be no conflict between the case and her relationship with Dalton, saying: "Sir, I don’t share a pillow with Dalton Lowne and even if I did, I wouldn’t discuss the case.”     Yet she and Dalton clearly had been having a romantic and sexual relationship. So why did she make this statement?

3) Bud and Harriet snipe at each other throughout the episode. Harriet calls Bud a jerk and tells him not to be such a baby. Bud admonishes her not to say those things at work, tells her she dresses like his grandma and accuses her of spying on his case for Dalton. Bud tells Harm and Mac that Harriet should apologize to him. Who was right and who was wrong? Should Harriet have been more understanding of Bud’s law school pressures? Should Bud have acted more mature? Do you think Bud and Harriet really were right for each other?

4) Mac tells Dalton that she can’t believe he didn’t tell her what he was doing (in taking on Sullivan as a client). Being blindsided is a complaint that Mac will also voice to her later romantic partners, both Brumby and Webb. Why did Mac adamantly end her relationship with Dalton, yet continued to hang on with Brumby and Webb after they hurt her? Was Mac overly obsessed with her men keeping her informed about what they were doing? And, assuming you believe that Mac and Harm did marry, would this be a point of contention for them?

5) I love the scene at McMurphy’s. Harm is smoldering in this scene and Mac is incredibly beautiful. Mac: "You never liked him (Dalton).” Harm: "I just felt you could do better, Mac.” Then later Harm says the famous line: "You’re a good-lookin’ woman, Mac, smart. Of course you do have a tattoo.”     At this point Mac had ended her relationship with Dalton and Harm’s relationship with Annie was, by his own admission, “not looking real good.” So, is this the point in which Harm and Mac should have gotten together? Should they have ditched Bud and gone home together after that bar scene? Would their relationship have endured if it had begun that night?

6) Harm: "Bud, nothin’ with a woman is ever great all the time. Hell, you’re lucky if you get five good days a month.”    Why would Harm make this statement? Was that in fact what he believed? And would that change after he married?

- Definately a 5 for me. One of the episodes that really shows how deep the friendship between Mac and Harm ran, and to a lesser extent the relationship with Bud as well. I think they both had a lot of growing up to do before they were finally ready to commit to the point that they'd sacrifice anything to be together, which is what they finally did! Q: Will there ever be a JAG reunion?

A: Not likely. but don't blame creator Donald P. Bellisario. He wants one for all of the fans who kept JAG on the air for 10 years. Plus, "It would be great fun to work with the cast and crew of JAG again," he tells us. The real question, says Bellisario, is whether CBS Paramount, which owns the rights to the popular series, wants a reunion. And we couldn't get a definitive answer on that.

- I think that it would depend on a lot of factors. CBS, DB involvement, and whether or not the cast is receptive. Now, CBS does seem to like reunion shows, both CB & DJE have voiced an interest in a reunion movie (i.e., the script that CB's husband wrote and DJE saying that it might be a good time to visit JAG again), now from what shygirl says DB wouldn't object. - It might be "great fun" for DPB but not for the cast, from what we now know of "life on the set" for both the JAG and NCIS casts. I don't think DJE would do it unless DPB does NOT have control. More likely, DJE would want to be the director! Between the reruns and DVD sales, there's probably enough interest for CBS to be interested, but I think DPB's role may be the major issue. - Harm was defending in the court martial of Sandra Gilbert. Hers was a defenseless case, she had a problem with the chains of command resulting in clipped wings. But he would rise above and beyond the call of duty and defend her against all enemies. There was no imposter today with intent to die. Episode of the Week – Sightings -- Araninda, 09:57:49 09/24/09 Thu
This week we are discussing Season 1’s "Sightings,” in which Harm and Meg investigate the disappearance of a young girl on an abandoned Navy base. The disappearance has the earmarks of a UFO abduction or secret experiments by the Navy. Harm rescues Meg and the child who have been taken hostage by drug smugglers using the abandoned base to manufacture their drugs.

1) Using our ratings scale, 0 to 5 with 5 being great, how do you rate this episode and why? This episode was, like most of Season 1, heavy on action-adventure. Do you, in general, enjoy these type of JAG episodes, or do you prefer comedy or episodes which focus on character interaction?

2) Meg tells Harm that he is being close-minded about the possibilities of aliens on the base. Harm replies: "No, I just reserve believing in things until I actually see them.” Meg then says: "Which is what everyone who is close-minded says.” Was Harm close-minded or was he a realist? Was he ever close-minded in the series about things he couldn’t explain with his senses?

3) What was in Meg’s character that she believed in UFOs while Harm did not?

4) Harm throws a coin to see if the base fence is electrified. Meg retrieves and pockets the coin. Harm asks her for the coin back, and Meg comments: "I bet you go dutch on dates.” Now, in this case, Harm explains that he needs the coin to test the fence on the way out, but in general, do you think Harm was tight-fisted with money? How about on a date? Do you think he would be a cheap date or would he tend to be extravagant?

5) There are two things about this episode that bother me. Harm likely wore night vision goggles in combat flights. So why didn’t he figure out sooner that the aliens were in fact drug smugglers wearing these goggles? Secondly, why would a long abandoned base still have electrical power?

6) How would this episode have been different if Mac had been Harm’s partner rather than Meg?

- I'm not a fan of season 1, since I don't care for the heavy action-adventure stories. I prefer the ones where characters interact, and you find out about what they're thinking. I also like the occasional comedy (Yeah Baby and Wedding Bell Blues are favorites of mine), as long as it's not every episode. That said, this one wasn't a bad one for the season -- I'll give it a 4. Episode of the Week – Cowboys and Cossacks -- Araninda, 23:20:07 09/17/09 Thu
Our EOTW is Season 2’s "Cowboys and Cossacks.” Harm, Mac and Bud are assigned to be official observers during a joint war games exercise between U.S. and Russian naval forces, but the games take a deadly turn when the rival captains decide to make the battle real.

1) How do you rate this episode and why? If this episode didn’t have the soaking wet Harm scenes or Harm in his dress whites, what would your rating be?

2) Should Captain McNamara (the US ship commander) have been relieved of his command, reprimanded or faced charges for his actions prior to or during the war games? Should Mac have taken a stronger stand against McNamara? Should she have reported him for his conduct?

3) From the start, Harm suspected that the two captains were not going to play by the rules, noting that ten years ago they played "bumper cars with their ships.” Yet he didn’t try to stop the games, saying the Navy likes their captains to be aggressive. Was Harm wrong to keep silent and not report his suspicions?

4) How would this episode have been different if both Harm and Mac had gone to the Russian ship?

5) Mac says she’s surprised that Captain McNamara had the ship’s company salute during the Russian ship’s sinking. Harm responds: "Some men value their enemies more than their friends.” Mac: "Including you?” Harm: "Need you ask?” What did Harm mean by his last line? Did Mac at that point in their relationship know which he valued more? And did Harm in fact value his enemies more than his friends?

- 5 Stars and yummy yum! This is one of my favorite Harm episodes. He was gorgeous in every frame and every frame of the screen caps tells you why we all fell in love wth him. It would be the same.
