MSN has a story about the best and worst military TV shows, here is what they said about JAG:

"JAG"
Like its spin-off "NCIS," "JAG," ostensibly a legal drama, was really a means of portraying the military and warfare in a slightlyÂ removed format. Conservatively oriented, the series, which ran mostly on CBS for a decade, emphasized duty, honor and adherence to the Uniform Code of Military Justice without deviation and regardless of the cost. But the real reason viewers of all political stripes really watched the show was for Catherine Bell, the willowy, British-born, half-Iranian ex-model who played Lt. Col. Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie from the second season forward. One of dozens of British actors posing as Americans on network television, Bell's wry starchiness made the never-consummated, under-the-radar romance between her and series main character Capt. Harmon "Harm" Rabb (David James Elliott) an entertaining variation on a typical network clichÃ©. There was a place to print your opinions, I let them know that there were probably way more women watching than men and we were all watching for one reason....DJE

- Well, this was obviously a male writing this! LOL! I'm not discounting the fact that there probably were a whole lot of people who watched for CB, but you can't just make a blanket statement and say that's the real reason people watch the show. - I noticed that quite often people who write about TV shows have barely seen some episode. I think newspaper or websites should go searching information and explanation where does knowledge be.   - Well that was a good thought, but no - according to Wikepedia, the writer is born and raised in the US and the article was in honour of the US Memorial Day. I think it's just a man thing - all the men I know who watched JAG, watched it for CB (although I think this writer is questionable - he didn't think Hogan's Heroes was funny!!!   - I don't think there needs to be shame put on the writer. I thinks it's really nice that finally a writer acknowledges CB's contribution to Jag and that she was equally as popular and a key ingredient to the success of Jag. There have always been articles about Dje's importance to the show without acknowledging CB. - Yes, most of the articles have been about DJE. Add to that the contract dispute where Moonves of CBS wouldn't renew til DJE signed. Then then when he was "fired" from the show in season 10, the fans went nuts and it was cancelled. Even though I'm a Harm fan first, CB should be given credit because it was their chemistry that made the show work, even though DB kept kicking me off the ship. - Its obvious to me that this person who write this never actually watched the show. If he or she had followed or viewed the show when it was actually on would have seen CB talk on shows, etc, and see that she was not a british actress. I think he just looked her up on the web and came up wiht all of that, "british born / former model" thing. I just noticed something for the first time. I watched my new DVD of JAG - on Lifeline when Mac says "We are getting too good at saying goodbye", I just noticed she put her hand on Harm's right shoulder and he raises his hand to hers. It is slightly out of camera range (who was that masked director not getting a 'touch' on screen-HA HA). That was a moment between them, too.   - I noticed it also. When it was originally broadcast it was cut off if you were watching a regular TV instead of on a widescreen at that time. In 2001 when it originally aired not that many people had a widescreen TV. (NT) -- Jeanaz8, 10:04:41 05/22/08 Thu

  - Your right Manette, the clip was on ET just before Lifeline aired for the first time. It was still on their website until they updated it a couple years ago. - When the show was broadcast CBS had a notice in the bottom left corner that the show ws being broadcast in HDTV. That meant we were not seeing the whole picture on a regular TV. The black bars that show on the sides when the flashbacks are shown that were not filmed in widescreen give you an idea of what we were not seeing in the HDTV widescreen broadcast. No realized the difference until someone noticed Mac's hand on Harm's shoulder and him reach up to touch her hand which was on left side and not seen on a regular TV. That started this thread. If AJ had gone with Harm to rescue Mac, would it have changed the dynamics between Harm and Mac while they were in Paraguay?

I'm not asking about the intentions of TPTB, but how the characters would have reacted differently.

- I think it would have. AJ would have seen firsthand what was going on and been more sympathetic. Definitely less guilt-ridden because he wouldn't have left one of his men behind. He also would have been a buffer between Harm and Mac and Webb interferring with them. He had better control over Webb. Gunny couldn't really stop Webb, as Webb was his superior. - he probably would have broken Webbs nose again if the guy weren't already mostly broken- I think the fall out would have been more like after gypsy eyes than what we got - history tends to repeat itself and people tend to make the same mistakes - or in this case the same response.   - That's no take on the question, all that's saying is that it wouldn't have happened. How does that pertain to how his presence would have effected Harm and Mac?   - If AJ had been there, he would have sent Mac off with Gunny and Webb, and not allowed her to wander off on foot with Harm. He and Harm might have made the journey together, but I don't think AJ would have bombed the missiles. He still had the mental strength of a Navy seal, but he would have thought about the politicial ramifications of senior naval officers operating unofficially in a foreign country.     - By Mac's word she and Webb weren't "involved", so keeping them together while they were getting medical treatment wouldn't equal romance. Once Harm and AJ finished the mission, Harm could go to the hospital and talk to Mac about how he had to come, and why. AJ knew why Harm wanted to go, I could see him saying "I'm going with you, and when you get her out of there, what do you are going to do to keep her?" Harm would have that in his head.       - Having AJ go with Harm would have changed the story around so much that anything is possible. However, having both AJ and Harm coming down to look for her would have been more like business as usual, not a defining moment.         That's probably true. But I think there was a reason that AJ asked Harm what he would do to keep Mac once he found her. AJ knew why he was going to find her. Maybe it wouldn't have furthered the romance, but it would be in Harm's head. AJ had a way of keeping his people focused. No plane crash would mean no concussion for Harm as well so his actions would be different. - If AJ had gone with Harm, I'm assuming neither of them would have needed to resign? Harm's resignation and sacrifice was part of what put Mac's defenses up so high, so that might have made things easier between them. - Yes, in that they both would have been on active duty - on leave or "TAD." They would have operated as a team to complete the mission. However, I think that the single most important thing necessary to changing the dynamic was a hug and a few words at the time of the rescue; I'm convinced that it would have made all the difference. - This would have been so different. No Harm/Catherine "marriage" or kiss. No Mac/Webb kiss. No Harm/Mac bed scene (no tub scene either). No resignation from Harm and no guilt about it from Mac. Mac would not have felt abandoned,and AJ would have kept her mindful of just whose f***up the mission was. No jealousy from Harm. No Mac/Webb thing. And wonderful supportive dynamics from the seal to his people. I think AJ wanted to support Mac, but couldn't - and that caused all the problems down the line. - Oy, it's been going on for a couple of weeks now. They are not near enough to threaten where I live, but depending on how the winds are blowing, we are getting a lot of smoke. Episode of the Week – Family Secrets -- Araninda, 00:42:11 05/16/08 Fri
Our EOTW is Season 6’s "Family Secrets.” This was the Season 6 Christmas episode, although there were not many Yuletide scenes. Webb tells Harm that Sergei is missing in Chechnya. Harriet's obstetrician is brought up on charges for the death of baby Sarah. Mac prosecutes and tries to keep Bud from interfering in the case. Mic resigns from his civilian law firm rather than defend the obstetrician. Harm rushes to California to tell his mom about Sergei before a newspaper article appears about Sergei’s parentage. Harm is intent on resigning his commission to find Sergei. Mac and Mic become engaged in the last scene of this episode.

1) How do you rate this episode and why? The obstetrician was found not guilty primarily because of problems Harriett had during a teenage pregnancy which she did not reveal to the doctor. Do you think the verdict was correct, or do you think the doctor should have received punishment for his conduct?

2) How do you think Trish felt on hearing the news that her husband had fathered Sergei? What motivated Harm to rush across country to tell her in person rather than telephone her? Do you think Trish and Sergei ever met? Do you think she ever accepted Sergei?

3) When Mac finds Harm at the Wall contemplating his resignation, she tells him that Renee called her. Why would Renee call Mac? Was she admitting, at least to herself, that Mac could reach Harm better than she? Why would Renee care that Harm planned to resign his commission?

4) What would have happened if Harm had resigned? Would he have found Sergei? Would AJ have allowed Harm to come back to Jag? Would Harm have wanted to come back? Would Renee have waited for Harm? Would Mac and Mic have gotten married?

5) Did Mic pressure Mac to become engaged? Or do you agree with Mic that, after 10 months of wearing his ring on her right hand, it was time for Mac to make a decision? Was Mic “calling her bluff” in saying that he was going back to Australia or do you think he really intended to leave? When Mic said he was leaving, did Mac then realize that she loved him and didn’t want to lose him? If not, then why did she agree to become engaged?

Oh, yes, one of the awful lines of this episode was when Harm and Renee were decorating the Christmas tree and she asks him: "Would you rather have me naughty or nice?" Yuck! Ok, please post your thoughts.

- Just a short comment , since I don't have much time now. I don't think Harm's relationship to Renee would have survived if he had resigned his commision. Renee was more in love with the idea of having a Navy boyfriend than she was in love with Harm. I'm sure she liked him well enough, but his biggest plus factors were his gold wings and dress whites and of course his good looks. But did she respect his complex personality ? I'm not sure ...     - She wasn't engaged or married,so it's not the same. Also, Harm made it clear he wasn't interested, and that in itself, does a lot to kill romantic feelings. Let's face it, how insulted would you feel if the guy you'd been dating for a year, couldn't remember you? She had known Cyrus for years, and though we don't know when the engagement happened, we do know it was 4-5 months after her father died. If she and Harm had been in a committed relationship, I'd say that was too soon. But there is no use harbouring feelings for someone who never loved you or wanted to marry you.         I agree Lska. While I think there are similarities with Renee's and Mac's situations, Harm never gave Renee any real hope. I think we humans, react to how people treat us, and I believe ultimately, Renee faced the truth about Harm and went gladly to Cyrus. It would have to be real with him. If you recall, Renee started out with Harm as the poster guy for the Navy...literally. If Cyrus was the poster guy for anything, it would have been for the funeral industry.         I think she realized she wasn't loved and the relationship wasn't going anywhere long before HArm's dunk in the drink. She was always unsure about where she stood with Harm. She was always jealous of his relationship with Mac. She was always pressuring him to let her in. I think his memory loss was not at all when she had "just realized" all that.         I completely agree. Harm told Mac that it had been over for a while with Renee'. Renee' knew it for a long time. Him forgetting her really drove it home that nothing was ever going to change. She didn't leave him on the spot, because he was injured and she did still love him, but she knew they were never walking down the isle. - This one's a 4. I think the doctor could be guilty of some negligence. Especially since he was out test driving cars and not really available. Yes, Harriet should have disclosed her entire medical history, but things can go wrong in seemingly normal pregnancies all the time, so I think the doctor needed to be held at least a little bit accountable.   - I sway back and forth with Mic. He himself, admitted that he pursued Mac relentlessly. Not that Mac couldn't think for herself, but I do feel Mic, knowing how she felt about Harm, treated her as if she were the moon and stars. That kind of adoration is hard to resist, particularly if you are feeling rejected by the person you really love. Mic always knew Harm was a threat, which is why he and Harm didn't get along. A few questions on Sturgis -- Theresa, 15:02:58 05/12/08 Mon
How close were Harm and Sturgis really? Were they friends because of mutual interests, or because of the shared experience of the Academy?

Sturgis knew Diane. Should he have been more shocked to see Mac in the elevator as she was the clone of a friend of his who had passed away?

Was Sturgis bitter toward Harm for whatever reasons, as Harm said? And if so, what would those reasons be?

What exactly triggered that stick up Sturgis' hind end in the latter seasons? It seemed to come out of nowhere?

I'd like to focus on what the actual character motivations were, rather than just "TPTB threw that in because they were being morons again" as that can be the answer for anything that happened on the show.

- We dont always choose friends who are exactly like us. Harm and Sturgis were a great example of that. I remember when Harm saw that Sturgis had come aboard,(in Adm. Chegwidden's office) He seemed really glad to see him, and they indicated that they'd at least tried to stay in touch. Until the last season, I liked Sturgis and Harm's friendship and the beginning of the friendship he had with Mac, he had his feet on the ground and was the voice of reason, for both of them. He helped the man rebuild his classic car - he gave him a finishing touch of a top as gift - they played basketball, when he was confused with how to handle Mac he called Harm - the total change in behavior can not be attributed to a character arc but a forced shift to save a salary. One really stupid question?

Why do you think season two changed Harm's apartment?

I know they changed from NBC to CBS but they filmed on paramount studios - and how hard could it have been to recreat that small set? After all they had to build his new set. And they did go to the trouble later on to create a McMurphy's set.

Was there a deeper reason for making him fix up his own loft?

I can't remember which) to the two story brick building in "Falls Church." Maybe once they found the Red Cross building and McMurphy's in Pasadena, they realized they could use one of the buildings in that alleyway as the exterior of Harm's apartment and quit using the stock footage of that brownstone. I have a story idea and need some information.

I know that married people can't work in the same office, and involved people can't be partnered up on cases etc. But what if they're in the same office and they're not married nor partnered up, but they are involved? Are there rules to their involvement? Can they live together, sleep together, have children together, split a mortgage and cars etc, without being legally married so they won't be split up? Could they only live that way for so long before someone made them do something else, or could they live in a "common law marriage" for as long as they wanted without anyone bothering them about it, or changing their billets because they're in the same office?

- The Deptartment of Defense doesn't recognize common law marriages - I'm sure it's DOD, not just Navy. Even if you come on active duty from a state that recognized your common law marriage, you have to marry your common law spouse or you can't get dependents' benefits. If a command finds out that two officers are in a committed relationship one will be transferred. If they are officers, even in today's society, their service reputations may suffer. With Voy being Oy last week, we missed having our Rerun EOTW. So let's do it this week and next week we'll resume our regular rotation. Our Rerun EOTW is Season 4’s "The Black Jet.” A Navy pilot and Harm’s former Naval Academy roommate, Lt. Commander Jack Keeter, is charged with espionage in Iran after his jet crashes. But when Harm and Mac find out the plane is intact, Harm is tapped by the CIA to fly the plane out of the country.

1) How do you rate this episode and why? Is it among your favorite episodes? What scene did you enjoy the most? Are there scenes in this episode that you wish had been longer or scenes that we didn't see at all that we should have?

2) Bud to Webb: "Commander Rabb lives by a creed, his duty to his country and his loyalty to his friends. You’re forcing him to choose between them. No man should have to do that.” Do you think that Webb intended to rescue Keeter all along, or did he decide to do so only after Bud’s plea? Did Webb live by the same creed as Harm? Does Bud’s statement apply to what would happen later in Paraguay?

3) Do you wish Keeter had appeared in more episodes? How would Keeter have made a difference if he had been a part of other storylines, for example, the Paraguay storyline or Harm’s stint in the CIA? If Keeter had been present more often, would he have brought Harm and Mac together sooner? Would Keeter’s presence have made Harm more fun-loving and carefree?

4) Why did Mac offer herself as collateral to the Bedouins? Was she, as Harm suggested, trying to punish herself for her actions in "People v. Mac”?

5) Mic assures Bud and Webb that Mac will return safely, saying "I promised I’d take her skiing.” How involved were Mac and Mic at this point? On a different point, what was the significance of the hugs that Harm and Mac gave each other? Also, Webb expressed concern about Mac’s safety and survival in this episode. Was this episode the start of his feelings for her?

6) Mac to Keeter, referring to Harm: "Is he always this cocky?” Keeter: "Only around women.” What kinds of activities do you think were in Harm’s past that would prompt this comment from Keeter? And why did Keeter not remark about Mac’s resemblance to Diane?

- at work so I only have a few minutes - I just want to mention the fun trivia about this ep for me is that line about paying for her actions - where mac says she'll pay at her article 32 hearing - that was looped the original dialogue was different. Apparently after ple vs mac aired the Commandant of the Marine Corps (I think that's the title for the head honcho) called bellasario and said - you can't do that! - I rate it a 5, good story, well acted, sweet connection between Harm and Mac. 2.Bud idolized Harm, none of Harm's actions or reasons could ever been anything but honorable to Bud. Webb, in his sane moments before his life went FUBAR did his best to help the people he cared about. I think bitterness toward Harm was a factor in Webb taking Mac to Paraguay, because he was stuck there for helping Harm during the Angel Shark case. Inside... -- Theresa, 15:10:45 05/09/08 Fri

- OMG will you just LOOK at that picture!! BJ is one of my faves because Harm looks even more amazing, the episode involved adventure, Harm had a close friend, we learnt that Harm makes loyalty to country and friends a priority, and that fabulous hug at the end. - It´s 10 to me because there are shippers moments, Keeter is a character I love and the plot is interesting. It´s an icon ep. I would like to see suprise in Keeter´s face when he met Mac because he was at the Academy with Diane too. - This is definitely a 5 for me, one of my all time favorites. I would have loved to see more of Keeter, I think it would have allowed Harm to be a little wild & crazy sometimes (of course the gorilla probably wouldn't have allowed that either). - This was an excellent episode, all the elements for a good story, I'd give it a 7. It is one of my favs, we got shipper, we got a good story and we had good interactions among the characters. I'm watching an old Frank Sinatra Tony Curtis WWII movie.

A Colonel tells Sinatra to take it easy on Curtis - he can't help it he's a college grad.

I thought all college grads became officers?

Anyone care to explain it to me?
