• Some comments on today's airing of an episode that's usually in the top twenty, if not top ten -- TH, 20:10:32 06/11/09 Thu
  USA aired Webb of Lies today, and because of the summer activities of my sons (one has a real job and the other has football "betterbethereoryouwontplay" activities) I am now up really early in the mornings. Watching Harm makes it worth it.
  
  Anyway, one of the reasons I was so vexed in JAG Seasons 8,9 & 10 when TPTB inexplicably paired Mac with Webb goes back to this episode. When Clark Palmer threatens Jordan, Harm tells Webb to give him the semi-conductor, and Webb responds, "She could be my girlfriend, and I wouldn't give it to him." This was quintessential Webb, the job/the mission/his career came first. Sadly, we saw that happen (and I have to give points to the writers for keeping Webb in character) when Webb callously risked Mac's life with Simon.
  
  The other thing that happens in this episode is that Mac refers to Webb as "cute" but I've always taken her comment to mean that, although she and Harm knew that Webb took all kinds of risks, there was something endearing about him. I never took it to mean that she found him attractive in the least. I could argue that Mac showed more interest in Mark Falcon than she did in Webb. So why was Mac interested in Webb? Was it all a part of her PTSD? Is this in keeping with the description of Mac as being ready to go the minute somebody shows interest?
  
  I'm asking if you think that Webb and Mac each stayed true to their characters as drawn early on in the series or if their relationship came out of the blue as a contract negotiation / 500 lb gorilla / UST curse of the waning years of JAG?
  
  Oh, of course the other reasons that this episode is so great is that Harm's make out session with Jordan is smokin' and the smoke becomes FIRE when Harm hops out of bed wearing nothin' but those boxers. That is just about male perfection walking out from behind the wavy wall, ladies. Sigh. I wish I could articulate how well this show used to be written and filmed and how much I adored the character of Harmon Rabb. Sigh again.

  • I pretty much agree, Cece. I've always felt that after Paraguay, after the unresponded-to messages, Mac felt that Harm was gone from her life, probably permanently. Lonely and despairing, she would never have been interested in Webb but for that and the horrific experience they had shared. In a way, she may have felt that he was all she deserved. I also think that she knew the relationship would never go anywhere and she would have broken it off long before she did, but for not wanting yet another failed relationship on her plate.     • Mac was definitely working out her issues with Harm through her relationship with Webb. The line that stands out to me is at the end of TILAM, when she says to Webb, "If you push me away one more time when I say I need you," or something along those lines. That was all about her history with Harm. She needed someone to be there, and for reasons both his fault and hers, Harm just wasn't there at the time. He could do the hero thing to save her, but he couldn't be there for her as her man. For all of Webb's issues, he could. -- lska, 16:37:23 06/12/09 Fri

        • Webb certainly wasn't the love of her life, but then again, how many sex scenes did we see with Harm and women who weren't the love of his life? How many would you call sleazy? I'm not saying I thought she and Webb were in a healthy relationship, but even in unhealthy relationships, there's often a lot of caring.           • I can't recall seeing many Harm sex scenes except with women he loved: Annie and Jordan. I just never believed Mac loved Webb. But even that wouldn't have mattered.             • I don't think it's Mac bashing, just different POVs. Harm/Jordan in particular wasn't any deeper a relationship than Webb/Mac IMO, although it wasn't as screwed up. There were also a few sex scenes with Renee -- can't remember how many because it's been so long, lol.               • Oh I know...though imo, there weren't enough sexy scenes. I guess you could say that Mac and Webb were dating, but the relationship was joyless and manipulative and made neither of them happy. They were chasms apart. Mac and Mic were engaged. Harm dated Jordan for about 6 months and really seemed to care for her. Jordan was in love with, but not sure of, Harm. Renee dated Harm for about 1 1/2 yrs, and Harm had loved Annie before she married his bf. They were real relationships. (NT) -- Cece, 22:37:23 06/12/09 Fri
                • Did we actually ever see Harm in bed with a woman? I still shudder when I think about Webbs pasty chest with his one chest hair. LOL IMO that relationship was born out of a desperate need to connect with someone, anyone after a horrible event. There was nothing sweet or romantic about it. It was about two totally emotionally (at the time) disfunctional people who shared a tragic experience. I think that relationship was used to point out that Mac was suffering from something deep down and it was huge red flag tha she needed help.                   • I don't think we ever saw Harm in bed with a woman. Annie was hinted at in Someone to Watch Over Annie and that was in really poor taste as her son was sleeping on the couch and Harm only had those louvers between there and the bedroom. Jordan was shown in a nightgown or robe a few times at Harm's place but never actually in bed with him.                 • IA that Harm loved Annie. IMO he cared about Jordan and Renee, but didn't really love either. I have an especially hard time calling his relationship with Renee functional. He enjoyed her on some levels, but he'd backed into the relationship and got stuck. There were periods of time when I felt like he was using her.   • I've not seen WoL, yet, but to me Webb was such a peripheral character that when he was made a meaty love/sex interest for Mac, I found it painful. I had guessed they had to use an inside character to go with the storyline of keeping Harm and Mac apart, instead of bringing in someone new so late in the shows running. inside -- mj, 11:07:19 06/12/09 Fri
    • When Webb started out in JAG, he was portrayed as a Mama's boy from the start, and a slightly humorous mess-up CIA pencil pusher. His mother once said he was like his father, and that wasn't a compliment. To me, Webb was always an unpleasant type, with a few bursts of good character. In the end, he made me sick. I even thought, at one point, that TPTB may have been desperate when they finally hired the guy who played Vukovic to be Mac's new love interest if the series should go on.         • Thats what got me about that whole arc. Up until that point there had been NO inkling of any kind of chemistry between Webb and Mac at ALL. Then all of the sudden he is in love with her. Really? It was so contived and very hard to beleive. I understand Macs need to have someone...but Webb just wasnt believable...mostly because of the canon we had been following all of the years.         • I do not think Vukovic was ever intended to be a love interest for Mac. I'm sorry, but I never saw it that way. I think Vukovic just had a big macho attitude problem.. If the series had gone on to an 11th season with him, I believe Mac would have played a role much like the Admiral did, with Vukovic and someone else playing more the Harm/Mac roles.   • I don't think we were really given enough about CG to form much of an opinion about Harm's attraction to her. I remember feeling angry with the fake wedding. Coming when it did, when DB was open about his disdain for shippers, it felt like a huge slap in the face. The kiss, which we'd all been longing to see between Harm and Mac, was shown as tender, sexy, and lingering, with soft focus and full ochestra. It was as if DB was saying "You wanted a kiss.   • During Angelshark, she was just one of the CIA lawyers - I don't recall if she was even credited with the guest role. I didn't give her another thought. As the Paraguay arc got underway, I thought Harm was just using her as a means to get what he wanted - Mac's whereabouts - the fake wedding was his "gotta-be-the-hero personality at work, the kiss - DPB's throwing it in our faces and rubbing it in that it wasn't H&M (note - no hug or kiss in Paraguay !). • Just watched a re-run of 'San Diego' -- I HATED this episode -- it was dismal and annoying and the pits and I hated everyone in it, except for Harm who was sad and lonely but as hunky as ever.   • I hated that Harm was going through all the trauma of Mattie accident virtually alone. I hated that he and Mac couldnt connect. It was awful...Vukovic was especially smarmy.   Do you think Harm's obsession with finding his father was realistic given the age Harm was when his dad disappeared? I'm not sure that a 5 or 6 year old wouldn't just move on with his life and accept things as they were told to him. What do you think?

  • Because Harm Sr was MIA, I believe that it was impossible for Harm not to develop an obsessive desire to find him, as he grew older. (Inside.) -- Cece, 18:27:21 06/03/09 Wed

  • I think his obsession with finding his father was completely believable. It bears keeping in mind that while he was 5 or 6 when his dad was shot down, he was about 11 or 12 when the war ended and the POWs that came home go home. So that is really the more realistic date for when Harm might have accepted that his dad was dead - but he wasn't listed as KIA.   • I totally agree with all the reasons above, but, also, the fact that Harm followed in his father's footsteps career-wise and had the whole Navy jet legacy thing going on further fuelled his obsession with his father -- finding him, not easily getting over his death, feeling he was alive and not 'letting go', continuing his resentment of his mother and stepfather even after he 'matured', and continuing connections with contempories of his father (Admiral Boone).   • I think the fact that the war wasn't popular was a factor. Defending his father honour as well as those who served would have had a big impact on him.   • I agree with the most of the other posters, it was realistic for Little Harm to grow into a young man obsessed with finding his father. Not all children connect with thier fathers at a young age, but some do. My brothers oldest son was only 2 when he left for Vietnam and that little guy pined for his Dad for the year he was away, and I think if he hadnt come home(and Thank God he did)Danny would have moved heaven and earth to find him, they were just that connected.   • We know it's been talked about to death and everybody has their own opinions, but the last 7.5 mins was the worst for me. I mean we went years with nothing and then teasers and then nothing again. Then it was wham bam thank you ma'am, we're engaged.   • For me the most painful scene was the Paraguay Hotel.   • I found the scenes from the Admiral's Dining Out very hard to watch. Harm was so ready to really open up and let go and take Mac in his arms (maybe more figurative than literally at first, but I DO think it would've been so great had they started 'them' then) and it was one thing after another -- her endometriosis, Webb's 'death' then NOT, and the scene when she said "I can't" to Harm with his begging-eyes -- well, I had to get up and walk away and I almost stopped watching the rest of the episodes!!!   • Two scenes that bothered me were Mac's drunk scene in The Stalker. I hated her accusing tone toward Harm. For some reason I always find myself wondering if, in her drunken state, all inhibitions were removed and that was how she really felt. The other scene that bothers me so much is from Measure of Men.   • The taxi cab scene in Paraguay. For me, it was so painful. Both were hurting, and both hurt each other. A close second would be the scene at the wall when Mac says she has a date with Webb.   • The scene that I thought was the worst took place in a hanger with Harm and Mac standing there, looking out at the rain when Beth O'Neil was on trial, and Harm is trying to convince Mac not to be so judgemental.   • Most frustrating - so many to choose from - echo about all of the above - but I found particularly frustrating the scenes in Jaggle Bells- Mac so obviously wanted to spend Christmas with Harm and he was so oblivious - fawning over Jordan. Most painful - every scene H&M were in together in the entire Paraguay arc! Second place in the painful was the scene where Mac should have but didn't rip Vuk a new six.   • At the Roberts party when Mac is a judge and they had Harm acting like a 2 year old. I never felt how he acted was in character and it was so uncomfortable to watch. There they were,alone in a hotel room,, Harm is not in the Navy, so no work issues, no significant others, no possibe interuptions, they were in bed for Pete's sake, and they were.... fighting? saying things to each other that had me stunned.   We've discussed this before on the board, but the shipper scenes below make me wonder again:
  
  We all know the ending of "Adrift 2", the "come to me, you know the reason" lines, and Mac arriving at Harm's apartment to find Rene there, her father having just died.
  
  Here's my question: Assuming Rene's father had not died, and Mac had "come to Harm" with just the two of them in the apartment, how would she and Harm have interacted? Would they have declared their love for each other? Would they have had HMS? Or would they have simply talked? Would Harm have ditched Rene at that point and would Mac have let him? In short, based on their characters, not what we wished for, what do you think would have happened that night if Rene had not been there?

  • I don't think that Harm was in any physical condition for HMS at that point. However, I do think that he may have been ready to open up and divulge how he was feeling. Mac may have at least been able to feel better about everything that had happened because she would have an idea that Harm felt more than friendship for her. Mac was still hurting at this point, but I think maybe Harm was ready to make the first move towards moving the relationship forward. I can see them talking and him holding her while she cried, etc. I would have to agree that HMS was probably not physically possible for Harm at this point, nor would Mac necessarily have wanted to go there yet. I think however if they had gotten together at that point, they're relationship might have been alot more fragile and might have fallen apart at some point in the future. • I'm confused - I always thought Rabb was a German name but everyplace I look says it's Scottish. Also MacKenzie is listed as a Scottish surname, it's not Irish?   • I don't think we ever heard anything about Harm's heritage. MacKenzie is a Scottish surname, but there are Irish MacKenzies as well. It's possible that they were originally Scots who migrated to Ireland at some point centuries ago. Rab or Rabb as a first name is usually a Scottish nickname for Robert.     • Oh - forgot to mention this. People used to say that names that begin with "Mc" were Irish and those that begin with "Mac" were Scottish.     • Harmon comes from the German "Hermann" and (latin: Arminius), and there´s a huge statue near Detmold. Hermann the Cherusk (?) is a famous soldier that lead a bunch of Germanic tribes into battle with the Romans - and drove them out of what is now Germany. (They came back about 100 years later). It´s a rather famous battle. There are a lot of Raabs around over here, Rabbs not so many. I suppose, both names derive from the same origin, though. "Rabe" indeed means "raven".   • I would have liked Harm to come out with his feelings when he went to Mac's apartment in FWFS (you know, when he talked more about real estate) -- to have put his strong arms around her THEN, kissed her sensless, and 'so on' and get things rollin' a bit sooner than the measly 12 hours which ended up being, in screen time, 7.5 minutes, which ended up being a darn shame for them, us, and the show. I can't get over how the entire script was written with one objective - keep them sparring and distant so it would make sense they walk away at the end.   • I also liked the scene when Harm drove 75 miles from Pax River to get Mac's opinion about a case and they were sitting in her apartment with the fire going, her in her silk pjs, Harm in his winter blues and looking fine.   • I just finished watching 'Camp Delta'. Altho there was nothing shippery about it -- Mac was so hard-nosed in this -- Harm was so mellow and I loved him in this and it showed how well they complemented each other -- they were so perfect for each other.   • I can go on here forever and I can remember the days of angst and the urges of throwing stuff at my TV(tho I rather throw them at DB)remember the hotel in Russia? more hotel rooms in Paraguay,Iran especially in the shippery episode Black Jet. They camped out together in Full Engagement episode and so many things we have not seen.The episode Mac was sleeping in Harm's living room,the time both went car shopping because Harm preferred Mac over Jordie. I know Mac wasn't ready to jump into another relationship and had to deal with the endometriosis issue but she could have leaned on Harm for some support & gave him some hope.   all those young men and women who have so recently given years or given their lives or their health in the many places where our service men and women are now serving and fighting. And let us not forget those veterans of previous conflicts and wars who were killed in service or who came back to serve their communities and their nation in so many capacities or who came back injured in mind, body, and spirit and may still be recovering from the days they spent in service of our country. On this Memorial Day, as on all days, I give thanks for all those who have done or are doing what I did not do, was not asked to do, and perhaps could not have done. Their stories have been told in stories from JAG, in other TV shows and movies, in drama, song, poetry and art. Let us please take time to remember, and to salute, and to thank for all that they did and all that they gave in order that we have the freedom to exchange greetings and thoughts on boards such as this (and my father and cousins--WWII veterans and not particularly internet savvy--would just be shaking their heads about all that is going on in today's world after all the effort they made to keep us safe and build a better life for their children!). As our flags fly this weekend, let us remember and give thanks and hold them in our hearts and our thoughts and our prayers.

I got off the plane this am on the east coast (I took a redeye from San Diego) and a soldier in uniform was met by his family - they'd gotten permission somehow to come to the gate. They had ballonns etc and there was a little girl of perhaps 3 in miniature desert digies and hat to match her dad's. I smiled as I followed them towards baggage claim. They were all so young.
