  • Harm's proposal -- Theresa, 20:40:37 08/27/08 Wed
I know we talked about this before, but I can't remember the responses.

We all have our ideas about what the ideal proposal is. And those ideas may differ from what we know of Harm and his penchant for being romantic (or not). So, if Harm had it in his head to propose to Mac without the prompting from her, or the pressure of their job changes, but just because he thought it was bloody well time, how would he do it?

Would he keep it simple? Would he showboat for her, strut around and show his pretty feathers (so to speak) with sky writing? Would he do a little of both?

Would he be nervous or confident?

What do you think, know Harm as we do?

Am I the only one who only recognizes by title - barely - three out of the 9 episodes listed below from the Season 7 EotW voting? I knew the first one, Guilt, had to do with Mac in Indonesia, and I knew that Defending His Honor was about Captain/Judge Sebring and some car accident, and I remember Hero Worship only because it was one of the most boring. Other than that, I couldn't have told you anything about the other eps based on their titles to save my LIFE!

And this was a season I watched "with" the HB!!! Episodes were discussed and analyzed and re-hashed and dissected, and I was part of it. Why don't I remember these anywhere near as well as eps from Seasons 1 - 5?

*sigh* I dunno. I guess either I'm having mental blockage and need to take more ginko, or there was just something about S7 that still makes me go, "huh?"

Hello! A very kind person suggested I write my request here, so here goes...

I'm trying to find the exact words from the episode 'Capital Crime' (s7) when Sturgis is talking to Harm (who is at sea) about Mac - Harm mentions something about 'agreeing' with Mac. I've already found one quote on JagReview, but it's not the one I'm looking for.

Any and all replies welcome! Thanks in advance - Jaggie

I meant to get this up in time for Araninda's EOTW discussion and didnt quite make it. Its an overview of the episode.

I'm sure she wont mind if you contribute to the discussion today if you are so inclined.

(I didnt include Bud and Harriets storyline. Their story needs a much sadder song.)

  • Episode of the Week – A Separate Peace (Parts 1 & 2) -- Araninda, 23:08:08 08/22/08 Fri
Wow, looks like we need to perk up the board! This is a good two-part Season 6 episode to do just that. Our EOTW is "A Separate Peace.” In Part 1, Admiral Tom Boone, nominated as commander of the Navy’s Sixth Fleet, is accused of taking part in a civilian massacre during the Vietnam War. In Part 2, Mac prosecutes and Harm defends Boone. In the B storyline, Harriet and Bud cope in different ways with the death of their baby.

    1) How do you rate this two-part episode and why?

    2) Harm gets Bobbi Latham to put pressure on Webb for classified information about the massacre. In a flirtatious lunch scene, Bobbi tells Harm that he’ll be in her debt and he responds that he can "handle anything she throws at him.”    How intimate were Harm and Bobbi at this point? Were they spending time together?

    3) After learning that Harm will be defending Boone, the SecNav says to Harm: "I don’t doubt your skills as a lawyer, Rabb. I don’t trust your judgment outside the courtroom.” He further admonishes Harm to at all times consider the good of the Navy.     Did the SecNav have valid grounds for his opinions about Harm?

    4) Harm to Mac: "Why are you bringing charges against Admiral Boone? Mac: "Because it’s what the law requires.” Harm: "Or, given your dislike of Admiral Boone, it’s what you require.”     Was Harm right or was his statement off the mark? Why was there animosity between Mac and Boone? Assuming that Harm and Mac did marry, would she and Boone have become friends?

    5) Boone to Harm, talking about Mac prosecuting the case: "I underestimated her, Harm. She’d cut your throat on a dark night and not think twice about it.” Harm replies: "She’d think twice, then she’d do it.”    What does this exchange tell you about each man’s opinion of Mac?

    6) In the scene of Harriet coming to Harm’s apartment, why did she choose to go to Harm? Why not go to Mac? Would you characterize Harm and Harriet as having a close relationship?

Because we recently discussed this on the board, I’m not asking about the Harm and Bud scene in which Harm says "I don’t know what it’s like to lose a child, but I do know what it’s like to lose the woman you love.” But feel free to comment on this line if you’d like to do so.

Some interesting notes about this 2-parter – 1) The fish tank in Webb’s office looks like the same one in the restaurant scenes in "What If”. 2) During the scene in Webb’s CIA office, he tells Harm: "You’re paranoid enough to work here” which of course Harm will do later in the series. 3) Singer says that she knows Stuart Dunston and gets valuable information from him for the case, which led some fans in a later season to suggest that Dunston was the father of Singer’s child.

Please share your thoughts and let's get some posts going on the board!

  • Rerun Episode of the Week – Critical Condition -- Araninda, 01:35:41 08/15/08 Fri
Our Rerun EOTW is the premiere episode of Season 8, "Critical Condition.” Harm, Mac and Sturgis unite aboard an aircraft carrier following their successful thwarting of a terrorist plot, only to receive word that Bud is in critical condition after a land mine accident. Back at Jag headquarters, AJ breaks the news to Harriet. Mac and Harm disobey orders to remain aboard the carrier and rush to the shipboard hospital to be by Bud's side.

    1) How do you rate this episode and why? Did you find the "psychic baby” scene (Little AJ says "Daddy” and Bud comes back to life) moving or did you think it was trite?

    2) Lots of powerful emotions in this episode. Which character’s actions and/or feelings were the most poignant?

    3) In the famous underwear scene, Mac says she’s changing and through the closed door, Harm says "I can help with that too.” Mac responds: "You get on a carrier and you turn into. . .” She opens the door, sees Harm holding a flight vest and goggles, and says "a considerate gentleman.”     But how do you think she was originally going to finish her sentence? Did she think Harm was flirting with her?

    4) In the "who stays, who goes” scene aboard the carrier, Mac suggests she and Harm flip a coin, but Harm refuses. Both are protective of each other, with Harm saying he doesn’t want Mac to throw away her career by disobeying an order, and Mac saying she doesn’t want Harm to play the superhero this time. How does this scene compare with FWFS, where they do decide to flip a coin and they each seem to want to save their own career?

    5) If Bud had died, how would that have affected Harm, Mac and AJ? Would it have brought Harm and Mac closer together? How would Harriet have coped with Bud’s death? What emotions would Coates have felt and would she still have been transferred to JAG headquarters?

    6) When this episode first aired, fans believed that this was the start of a season in which Harm and Mac’s relationship would deepen. Looking back now, in hindsight, do you think this episode should have been the start of a closer relationship between Harm and Mac? Would Harm at this point in the series have been ready to "let go” and pursue a romance with her?

  • Harmyboard Emmys - An Announcement & A Request -- Araninda, 18:11:57 08/18/08 Mon
With the primetime television Emmy Awards scheduled in September, it’s time to plan our annual Harmyboard Emmy Awards as well. Our Emmy Awards are, of course, limited to JAG, and all of us have the opportunity to nominate and vote within each award category. CatMom has done an understanding job each year spearheading the Harmyboard Emmys, together with her formidable cat accounting firm. Sadly, however, she is unable to organize the effort this year, so I have volunteered.

But I need your help to make this activity a success. First, I need volunteers willing to assist me in finalizing the categories. We can do that by exchanging ideas through e-mail and anyone who would like to help with this is welcome. Second, I need volunteers to help write the awards ceremonies (we generally announce the awards on the board in multiple postings). I know there are clever writers on this board, so please volunteer. (CM, I hope you will have time to lend us a hand in the awards ceremony writing.)

If you interested in helping in organizing the process and/or in writing the ceremonies, please click on my name above and e-mail me.

Our annual HB Emmy Awards have always been a hilariously fun activity. Hopefully, with your help, we can carry on the tradition and make it a success again this year. The nomination process will open soon, so keep watching the board for more details.

One of the questions asked about Harm and Singer and how they would work together. What I'm wondering is how the show would have been if Singer had been Harm's partner. With her personality the same as it was when we saw her. And Harm the same as well. Do partners on a show have to be the heroes? If we had Mac in there just as much as Harm's friend and love interest and fellow lawyer (especially in the latter seasons they weren't always teamed up on cases), could they make it work in an interesting way to have Singer there as the thorn in his side, while he tries to make it work with Mac on both the personal and professional level?

This may have been brought up before. I'm not a regular on this board so I don't know but I've just read the umpteenth fanfic which talks about how Harm's bank account was totally depleted by the trip to Paraquay. This makes absolutly no sense to me. A round trip ticket is about $1,500. Up until he resigned he had to be making more than $100,000, even if he wasn't a lawyer. Yes, he keeps a plane and yes he lives in an expenseive city and yes his insurance rates for vet, SUV and plane must be high. Yet still, I earn quit a bit less and I can come up with $1,500 on the spur of the moment and it would not put me into bankrupcy even if I had to charge it.
I just don't see how a single guy making that type of money who does not go out on spending binges could not have squirrelled more than a couple thousand dollars away.

  • Court System, etc. (inside, please) -- highplainswoman, 12:30:43 08/08/08 Fri
Not to move any of the interesting discussions down, but Theresa mentioned how "confusing" the system can be to those who don't know it. Couldn't let that pass without a comment or two.

First, not bashing anyone or anything--not everyone has the same interest and to the same degree as I do about philosophy and justice as opposed to legal procedures, etc. My intent is to hopefully educate here. And an attorney like Janlaw should really chime in here.

What Theresa is referring to is called "the fruit of the poisonous tree", I think--and Mac made reference to that in one of the episodes. There are exceptions to the rule, like what's called "inevitable discovery"--in other words, if the evidence in question would have or could have been discovered in some other fashion than through "illegal" means/actions on the part of the government, then it is allowed. However, the reason there are limitations on what the government can/can't do is to limit the power of said government; after all, especially in high profile cases, the government has unlimited resources to bring to bear on a case, whereas a defendent is more than likely handicapped by a lack of funds--unless you're extremely wealthy. Historically, this notion of a "level playing field" comes down to us from medieval Europe and the idea of "good" prevailing over "evil", specifically in the tournaments of knights, etc. This ideas obviously has its limitations--the case of the Salem witch trials is a prime example of the extreme application of "good" is more powerful than "evil".

In addition, if the government gains evidence through unethical and/or illegal means in one case, what is to prevent that same government from doing the same in any other given case? The idea of the "slippery slope" is tenuous; however, there's enough "truth" in the concept to make one wary of even beginning down that path!!

And, finally, historically, a case can be made the founding fathers purposefully devised a system of government that was limited in scope and function. When they wrote the Constitution, they were something like seven years out from the end of the Revolutionary War and a relatively bad experience with a strong, centralized government, and disgusted with a very weak decentralized government as set up by the Articles of Confederation. It was so weak it could barely function. So they crafted a compromise that, down through the years, has been tweaked and fiddled with to meet each generation's specific needs and idealism. Part of that has included expanding the franchise to vote from white property-owning men in the late 1700s to pretty much universal "sufferage", as it now stands. Linking this to the legal system, as society has grown both bigger and more diverse, it has adjusted accordingly. But the idea remains the same: a strong government, regardless of ruling party, has the potential to abuse it's own citizens; therefore, limits, both legal and ethical, have to be placed on the officials acting in our behalf.

Besides, there's more than enough evidence, especially with the development of DNA evidence, to demonstrate the government, even in recent years, and especially in Illinois, still tends to act "improperly" and "unfairly", i.e. the number of "inmates" who were proven innocent via DNA evidence who were waiting on Death Row, of all places!!

All "food for thought", if one is so inclined. I suspect Janlaw might want to contribute to this "discussion" as well. (P.S. I gained the historical information through my undergraduate "Constitutional Law I" and Constitutional Law II" classes. As thorough as they were, I'm positive they weren't nearly as informative as law school classes are.)

And I hope I didn't sound too "preachy" or even too "professorial"--although eventually I hope to become a history prof down the road!!
