Would it kill you to breathe easy?
Only seventeen miles lay between you and me
I could make it if I have to

Much to her dismay - to her total, disapproving, uncooperative dismay - she had ended up spending the majority of her summer in Hawaii with her parents and other random family members who either lived there, lived there part-time, or who were there like her and her parents just on vacation. Considering that she had moved out to RD just a few months before having to finish up her school year at boarding school, she had really been praying on being able to at least spend her summer there in an attempt to get to know the area. Of course her number one reason for wanting to stick around was for him - their time together had been far too constrained and limited, and they had had all sorts of plans of how they would spend their summer together - two months of freedom, no having to cut classes, or smuggle him into her dorm at school no too-short weekend visits. So, her parents' announcement that they would be returning to Hawaii for the last six weeks of summer had, not surprisingly, not gone over too well. She had little say in the matter though, and had been whisked off back to the land of sun and surf where she had been raised. She had made an effort to stay in touch with Cole over the month and half, but with them both being so young and so inexperienced in the workings of a real relationship, they had never made any declarations or set out any guidelines or anything like that - expectations, in her opinion, just would lead to disappoint. So, she had just settled for constantly reminding him that she was missing him, and for counting down the days till she was back. Finally though, summer vacation was over and she was being given a second chance at trying to make life work over here on the mainland. With both Kesi's and her cousin Kali's weddings approaching and plans overwhelming their lives, an excuse to get away from the drama of day-to-day life had been fabricated: a back-to-reality bonfire on the beach as an excuse to have some drinks, light a big fire, enjoy probably one of the last clear nights of the fall, and catch up with everyone who had been away on vacations or busy with work or whatever. The crowd was mostly older than she was - more of Kalia and Kesi's friends and the boys' friends really - but she was old for her age and got along famously with almost anyone, so it was all good. The glam-girl had gone casual for the night on the beach - faded skinny jeans with bare feet despite the chilly sand and a black and silver-patterned hoodie, zipped all the way up, the hood bunched around her neck to ward of the breeze - and a Corona in one hand doing its part to keep her warm. Somewhere she had left a vest and some socks and shoes in a beachbag, but it was dark now and she wasn't exactly sure where she had left it... She had called him earlier that day but it had gone straight to voicemail so she had just left him a brief message requesting he get his butt down there a.s.a.p., and then she had called Chad and also gotten his voicemail, left another message, and so now was on her own apparently to entertain herself. There were enough people around though that before long she was sitting on a driftwood log with her back to the fire in light-hearted conversation with her cousin's fiancé and some friend of his...
