Am I the only one that thinks that making the girls pay $50.00 for a dinner in their honor is a bit tacky? And then on top of that, making them bring silent auction items to raise more money? I thought this was about "the girls"? $50.00 is alot for a dinner that most the girls will not be eating anyway. But, you have to attend, and bring your parents, "add another $100.00. OK, parents and LED's make sure you bid on your girl's auction item so it will look like she raised a alot of money. Now, tell me, "is this about the girls"? or is this about making money? Where does the money go?????

Nothing new in SC. And I'm referring to the incessant drivel that appears on this board. There are a bunch of Know-It-Alls out there who are, in reality, CLUELESS! What rock (or tire-less Camaro on cinder blocks in front of a trailer) have you been living under? You complain that the line-up is rigged when - HELLO! - the girls' names were drawn at random and the girls themselves chose the spot they want to be in. Much fairer than the strategic placements done by the previous directorship.
You only fall back on the "this is a scholarship competition" when, in reality, many of the girls are on major scholarships to college already. Yes, the scholarships are a part of the program. But as noted by the more reasonable/logical crowd on here, there are many more less expensive ways to win scholarships. This is a PAGEANT! And the scholarships are only a part of the prize package. And if a girl wants to use it for a drivers' ed course or a doctorate, you are you to question it. Oh, I forgot....you're a know it all.
Another year and we have the same angst directed against a girl who did well in preliminary competition. Nothing new there. When are you folks gonna accept that prelim wins only means that a girl happened to have the highest scores in THAT group on THAT night in THAT competition only after the high & low scores were dropped? Once you factor in the Top 5 vote of the judges who's scores were dropped in preliminaries, you can have a different overall winner. Remember Danielle Browder being a double-preliminary winner in 1999 and not making Top 10? Remember Lindsey ? (Golden Corner) as double-preliminary winner being 1st runner-up to Miss SC Danielle Davis who won no preliminary awards?
Then there are those who claim that on final night, the girl with the most points should win and the Top 5 ballot should be tossed out. BREAKING NEWS (not really breaking new for those who actually know the system) - the Miss America guidelines state that final night scoring is from 6 - 10 only and the question is "Can this girl fulfil all the duties & handle the requirements of the job of Miss SC?" Scores are awarded in answering that question: 6=No, 7=Probably not, 8=Maybe, 9=Probably yes, and 10=Definitely Yes. And those scores ONLY determine who gets into Top 5. At that point, judges rank the Top 5 by who they think is the best choice, the next best, etc. BEFORE this procedure, you had judges trying to manipulate scores to insure their pick won.

I am curious about how much money the administrator's and top staff rake in for their positions in this non-profit organization. I know the Sander's were able to maintain a pretty good lifestyle off the pageant. What is the ratio between administrative cost vs awards to contestant's/charitable organizations? Nicki Haley just justified defunding the SC Arts Commission because 30% of its operating budget went for administrative costs. The amount of scholarships (and I am not talking about those hypothetical college offers IF you attend the school) amounts to how much exactly? Available scholarships have nothing to do with ACTUAL money given toward contestants' educations. Quoting phantom statistics sounds very good for a program's reputation but I would like to see the actual money that is put in the winners hands vs administrative/production costs. No administrator, IMO, should be able to live the high life off a non-profit. Reimbursement for expenses is fine. However, holding another job and pocketing big bucks off your volunteerism is not.JMHO...

Subject: Actually she will have to be enrolled in school by September. But I have to agree I don't think we want to send our local nail tech to represent us at MIss America. I do think we should be looking at the bigger picture. The judges job should be to look for the the best all around contestant. Former MIss SC's have included doctors, national tv host, opera singers on braodway and dozens of other high successful careers. I have to agree I don't think SC wants to send our local nail techn

Clemson and Greenville Scottish Games were like an oasis in a pageant desert. BRAVO to both of you. The showmanship of both contestants was superb. And Greater Greer from last night belongs right up there with them! The best three talents in the Miss Division the entire week.

Subject: Please someone explain,I do not understand !!!! Why did they not give all awards for the competitions that were done last night.? Do they only give certain ones each night,if so that is just dang crazy if you ask me. I did not attend the pageant but sure enjoyed watching it online. We had great feed and I will continue to watch all week even though we are not big pageant goers. The Miss winners I will say were right on but what they heck went on with the teens. Well I should correct myself,Rebecca was beautiful and her gown was stunning,so you go girl. BUT the talent was a shock. Not that the girl who won was bad,just didnt see it being winner material. The girl with the red dress who danced and sang was by far the best talent and most entertaining.

Subject: Miss talent was very competitive last night. There were 5 or 6 girls that could have won talent: Anderson, Capital City, Greater Mauldin, Greater Hartsville and Laurens. Teen talent was very weak which did surprise me since there are some amazing teen talents this year. Normally the girls with the strongest talents choose to perform talent first to define themselves early on to the judges. Tonight's talent in Miss and Teen will be great. Look for Greater Greer, Easley and Spartanburg in Miss and Greater Greer, Anderson and Greater Mauldin in teen. I liked all preliminary winners last night, but honestly, it could have gone so many different ways. Greater Greer, Easley , Lyman, Columbia or Spartanburg also could have won swimsuit. Capital City was my winner in teen gown and OSQ. I think it's a very competitive year and have no idea of who the winners will be.

Did any of you think the lighting was too dark? I could hardly see Jane and the contestants never seemed to be in "hot" lighted spots on the stage. I took stage lighting in college while getting a degree in theater and I do not know how the Township audience even saw well, much less the live stream audience. After talent performances, they blacked out the contestants so quickly most of them were bowing in the dark. Honestly!

This weather is too hot to have these young ladies standing out in the SUN for hours. Our Princess was sick all night from the heat yesterday and the mother of one of the Teens on our hotel floor said her daughter was still having a headache from almost passing out today. Columbia is a wonderful place, but it is too HOT to have the girls out in the heat. PARENTS, bring water, go buy some umbrellas and hats, do what you have to to protect your daughters from heat stroke.
