Hi Syntarsus,

Wow! That really is a Madhouse! I don't know if I was a parent that I would encourage a friendship between a 9 year-old and a 14 year-old. Five years difference isn't so big in the adult world, but at those ages it's HUGE. And this kid shows a propensity towards violence and lying, and has at least one ineffectual parental unit that through wimpy neglegence reinforces his self-centered, demanding behaviors. And it sounds like his mother doesn't like having him around any more than you do!

As far as your own parents not seeing the situation clearly, there's an old saying - "Denial ain't just a river in Africa."

Watch your back, Syntarsus - and keep focusing on what you need to do to get out of that Madhouse. I lived in such a place while I was growing up, and it gave me a perverted, inaccurate view of the "outside" world - so much so that I stayed in the madhouse much too long because I was afraid. I mean, if my own family was this dangerous and bizarre, it scared me to imagine what the unknown, great-big-world outside my front door would be like. I finally did make it out and was pleasantly suprised to discover a beautiful world with some beautiful souls inhabiting it. There is ugliness and some real shitheads too, but without the bad we just take the good for granted. My only regret was in not doing it sooner.
