"He WAS the central office, for all intents and purposes, while he was alive."

I believe that Paramahansaji is still alive. The guru is not limited by having, or not having a body.

"personalized instruction cannot be generalized to all of us who come after"

No it can't. Just as Guruji's advice to some disciples about the organization cannot be generalized to all of us who come after. He gave different advice to different disciples. The relationship to the Guru is individual. Lahiri Mahasayaji even had different disciples practicing kriya slightly differently, I understand.

"Yoganandaji also taught a few disciples kechari mudra, but it was not part of his general kriya instruction."

Exactly. Just as he had a few disciples working outside the official office.

"I am sure during his lifetime, Yoganandaji gave permission for many to initiate. But it certainly did not imply that they should spread his message in ways which conflicted with the very organization he set up to carry his teaching forward into the future."

I don't believe that other teachers who are disciples of Yogananda, teaching Kriya, are in conflict with SRF- except to the extent that SRF chooses to make it a conflict. In India there are many Lahiri Mahasaya lineages. There is mutual respect and harmony among several of them. Those who choose to make it a conflict do so. Those who don't, don't.

"Well... there are two elements to initiation - the teaching of a method, and the transfer of spiritual power."

I agree. If disciples of only one kriya path had spiritual power, and none else had any power, then that would be proof that the power comes from the one organization. But I've met people from AT LEAST FOUR kriya lineages that have true spiritual power. That's because the power (and the authority) comes from our blessed line of Gurus, not from an organization. The power that comes through SRF also comes from the Gurus- not from the organization.
