Reading some of the arguments, I feel this can go on forever as everybody seem to have some good points. The difficulty is how you define the finalists of, say intermediate being at the right level.
Control experiment would be having a hit of the inter finalists vs those knocked out 1st round of the advanced. If any of those finalists beat some one from advanced, would you then argue the intermediate finalists danced at the wrong level?
Ideal situation would be, say the best 20 couples in the room do adv. the next 20 do inter...so on. What we are doing then is, in terms of dancing quality, to award the best 6 couples, ignore the next 14, and award the following 6 couples at the top end of intermediate, then again ignore the rest in intermediate...
I understand the resoning of the novice/inter/adv system is the recognition of the very bests, the intermediately bests, and and novicely bests. Is that fair to those, say not good enough for advanced final, but better dancers than the intermediate people? or they're just unlucky to be in between?
To be fair to everybody, you really can't have the novice/inter/adv format but to enter everybody in one event, and to place the top 1st to 18th couples. Now that's ridiculous...
I don't have answers, any comments from anyone?
