Goes back to the greeks. Plato distinguishes between killing greeks (bad) and killing foriegners (good). This scenario breaks down as the world gets smaller and smaller. We are interconnected now. We have the insight to be able to connect our neighbor's happiness with our own. I agree that this is basically the case, albeit a sub-concious understanding for most. I do think that it is also very simplistic - not your answer, but the reasoning itself. Why are we not beyond this kind of thing? Why does it take humanity so long to change it's collective ideas? I think this is an even more interesting question (although the one posed is a fine question.)

Maybe it is just me, but when a plane crashes, I don't need to know how many people died. Not only do I not need a body-count, but I certainly don't need to know how many Americans died. Furthermore, I am discouraged by the distinction - as if American lives are more important - to me, to you. It's crap. People are people. It doesn't matter which side of some arbitrary line they live on (excuse the grammar.)

Now I will go off on a tangent: What is pride in country? Where does this come from. I personally believe that one should only be proud of their own personal convictions and accomplishments, and perhaps those of thier progeny which are, in a way, their product. But pride in country? Anscestry? If you take pride in certain aspects of your country, then other aspects must fill you with shame. The same with your anscestry. If you are going to take pride in certain deeds of your anscestors, you must feel shame for others. I say, take pride only in your own actions. It makes sense and it is les complicated. It's also less likely to lead to aggression towards those who are "different."
