At the time there was a perfectly reasonable opinion being put forward that Spike's evil was checked only by his chip and his desire for Buffy. Actions were compared with internal motivation and systems of control to no small amount of philosophical chewy goodness. In fairness the 'Spike is EVIL' POV is largely supported by what Spike himself says, but as I've said in another post it seems to me that this is posturing and that there is more of William in Spike than many people conceed.

There was a whole Spike vs Angel thing going on which is probably best forgotten because of the disagreements it caused, so much so in fact that many, myself included, tried to remain neutral rather than having an actual opinion. Both characters were excessively lauded and overly criticised in various ways.

There's more to say but look in the archives, I'm not in any way trying to revive this although it may have a life of its own beyond my control.

(I was just saying!)
