'Spike is EVIL' POV is largely supported by what Spike himself says, but as I've said in another post it seems to me that this is posturing and that there is more of William in Spike than many people conceed.

I think it is partially posturing (As Spike himself says in Becoming Part II – “We like to talk big, vampires do. “I’m going to destroy the world”. It’s just tough guy talk. Struttin’ around with your friends over a pint of blood.”) but I also think Spike is trying to convince himself not that he is necessarily evil but that he even knows who he is (horrible sentence construction but you get the idea I hope). I think Spike has been having an identity crisis, certainly since being chipped, but I think even farther back when he lost Dru. I think there is definitely a lot of William in Spike and I believe that was made clear (in my opinion) from the start. When we first meet Spike, he shows a true tenderness for Dru – whenever he talks to her he switches out of vamp face. He shows a sensitivity to others, especially Willow, that does not seem to be a part of the standard vampire personality. We see the same thing in season 3 of Angel with James and Elisabeth. I think that ME sent a mixed message about how much of the human is left in the vampire. Giles and Buffy definitely believe that the vampire is not the person vamped but time and time again, we see the human peeking through in Spike, James, even Harmony. Darla told Angel that everything that you were informs what you are. Dru told Buffy that vampires can love well if not wisely. Spike had a genuine regard for Joyce, completely independent of his feelings for Buffy (additional examples available upon request). I always objected to what I refer to as soulism. I see why they did this – otherwise some really unpleasant questions about the morality of all Buffy’s staking would need to be addressed.
