Now that I've had a couple of days to relax from the results of Saturday’s contest, I would like to touch on a few things.

One: I am obviously VERY new at this Pipe Major thing, so I will take all of the responsibility for Saturday's results. It is my job to have the band ready at a competing level, and quite frankly, the mistakes that were made Saturday were those of a Grade V band, and that's my fault. Jim and Frank are correct - we have a lot of new members, and these mistakes can be understood. But that really has to be the end of it. The grace period is now over. No early E's. No unsteady blowing. No pushing the tempos. I don't want to cut anybody - that's not fun, but traveling 110 miles to come in last is even less fun (I hope you all agree). If I cut you, please understand it is not personal. Just play well enough where I can't cut you.

Two: Please come down to practice Wednesday with a clean chanter. Remove all of the tape from all of the holes. We are starting new. Also, make sure every single stock you own is tight. Borrow hemp. Steal Teflon. I don't care what you have to do, but ALL of our instruments need to be in competition shape. What happened Saturday was unfortunate, but the fact that it happened to only one of our players is simply luck. There were many more instruments whose tuning pins were not tight, and whose base or tenor drone could have slid. You need to know your instruments. Simple as that.

Three: Learn the music. I didn't say "learn the notes," I said learn the music. There are very distinct points in both sets where our expression is poor. EVERYONE has some part in these sets where they can improve, and we have six weeks before Rockland.

Four: Don't get discouraged. I've heard a "lipstick on a pig" comment regarding Jim and Frank's statements. Unfortunately, neither of them were there, so they can't really tell what happened to us. Those of you who were there know what happened. And you ALL know we are a much better pipe band that what we showed on Saturday. We just didn't play like it. Every single one of our pipers can play this march set, so do everything you can possibly do to improve on how you play it.

Trust me. No one is more embarrassed by what happened on Saturday than me. We have never finished last before. This was out first contest EVER without Jim. I heard late Saturday: "poor American Celtic. Jim left and his brother just can't run that band." Quite frankly, I don't want to hear that again. Ever. Like I said, I am taking responsibility for Saturday. The rest of you need to FORGET WHAT HAPPENED. But be ready to play at the Grade IV level starting Wednesday.

Finally - some comments from the judges:

John Wassman - Piping:
1. "Chanter Pitch too high (too much playing in the sun)" - standing around for ten minutes waiting for the judges to get their acts together didn't help either.

2. "Drones very distracting. Didn’t help performance. Bring tempos down" - We can never guess where he would have put us if not for the drone issue.

Joe Brady - Piping:
1. "Drones unsteady from the start"
2. "Top hand needs to be better set" - the sun and my fault (tuning)

June Hanley - Ensemble:
1. "Someone’s drone is not struck in correctly"
2. "No variation in bass beat" - again, that's my fault. Something we'll have corrected for Rockland.
3. "Nice snare part here" referring to the last tune... I have nothing to do with that comment, unfortunately.
4. "Sound hurt you today."

Just some high(lo)lights. Thankfully, nobody wrote "nice try." Basically, we'll never know what we could have done with better tuning/instruments. These mistakes won't be made at Rockland, so that should be encouraging.

I have a lot of faith in this band and our players. I know we are much better than what we've shown. We need to be ready to stomp people at Rockland.

Sorry if this is harsh. I want to have fun doing this.

See you Wednesday.
Pat.

Results from Bonnie Brae - (not good)There were 10 bands in Grade IV, and alas, we came in tenth. The two piping judges both gave us 10th, the Ensemble Judge gave us a 10th, and the Drummers gave us an 8th.... (yay drummers!)

The Band has been working their collective buns off to get ready for this event. The effort shows. We were sounding pretty tight on Wednesday, including the Bass. It's time to show the field that we are a contendor this year. Comments from several people that I have run accross lately all express the same theme: "That American Celtic Pipe Band is really a pretty sharp outfit. They have a good sound and are getting better all the time." Only we know what things we have to work on. Attitude is a very big part of how we play. Play with attitude. God knows we have been putting in the practice. If we look like we know exactly what we want to do, then most likely we will do exctly that. Regretably, I will not be with you all this time, I can't get out of my National Guard drill this weekend like I did last time, this my wife's birthday (notice that's my second excuse) so I'll be traveling from Long Island to Albany and back to Long Island on Saturday and Sunday. If you win a prize don't blame me for not winning last time. Cutch, here's your chance to shine. As they say in show Biz: "Break a Leg", but be careful where you are walking so no one really gets hurt. Good Luck. Tara, don't forget to call me with the results.

I contacted Chris Hamilton about doing a workshop for us a couple of weekends in the future, and about purchasing ash plugs. First, we can get 10 plugs for $230 (plus S/H).
The workshops cost $300, plus travel. I think that, usually, workshop tutors stay with one of the members of the band (right Snoop?). If that's not feasable, we'd have to put him up in a hotel room.

Chris is the Pipe Sergeant at City of Washington, and has been competing with them for over a decade... he was on the team that won the World's the same year Jim did. He's definitely a great option for us if we're serious about doing a workshop. It would likely be on a Saturday for a few hours.

Let me know what kind of feedback you all have on this.

I also updated the Web site a little to say goodbye to Snoop.

I just got 10 sets of ash plugs for the pipers. They should be relatively easy to put in, especially for those with Ross bags. You'll get a set tonight, and try to get them in ASAP so you can get used to them.

This should REALLY help with our starts and stops. See everyone tonmight.

If you have a leather bag, DO NOT USE THESE PLUGS.

Insert the plugs into the bottom of your drone stocks. You will probably need to hemp them for a snug fit. You can adjust the rubber washer at the base of the plug to set the tensiono of the thread. A looser thread means less pressure is required to operate the valve (usefule for a lighter setup). A tighter thread requires more pressure - ie, a stronger chanter reed.

I hope these work out well. Again, if you have a bag that requires seasoning, DO NOT USE THESE PLUGS.

See you all on Monday....

I would like to find out if anyone is interested in practicing on Sunday. So far, Tim and Jack Meehan have expressed an interest, but I've not heard from anyone else. I don't know how many of you utilize this forum, but if you read this, please let me know what your thoughts are. I would call each person individually, but I don't have a band phone list (suprise!)

Jack has offered his house for Sunday. We've practiced there MANY, MANY times in the past, and it is usually very productive. We used to have these practices from 10am - Noon, but I'd like to do it for 2 hours from 9 or 9:30 (obviously up for discussion).

Also, Frank Riggio has indicated we may be able to use the firing range in Brentwood(?) for Sunday's, which might not be a bad idea since Marty says it may rain. Frank, is that offer still out there? Is ANYONE interested in practicing this Sunday? If you'd rather respond via email, please do, but it would be best if everyone had a chance to see how many people were supporting this idea on the forum...

Hope to get some feedback soon... I know it's short notice, but if we can sneak one more in before next Saturday, it would certainly be helpful.

I would like to keep everyone informed on what I think each week's practice should cover. I will try to do this every week, but given this is the first one, I can't gaurantee that I'll be as ambitious in the future....

We have a Parade on Memorial Day and Contest on June 1. This week, I would like to get on pipes to go over band/parade music from 8:00 - 9:00 (including tuning). At 9:00, we will go over the March set for the June 1 contest on CHANTERS and PADS ONLY for 1/2 hour - 45 minutes (depending on progress).

Keep in mind, we are planning to practice this Sunday at 9:00am. At that practice, we will go over the MEDLEY AND MARCH sets on PIPES and DRUMS ONLY. Frank - can you bring directions to the Brentwood Road Armory this Wendesday for Sunday's practice?

Last - but certainly not least - I haven't tuned the entire pipe section on my own since the Montauk Parade. That worked out well because we had been playing for a whole season. At practice, it would go a lot quicker if everyone played their pipes during the week. I will give new reeds to those who need them this Wednesday, but your help during the week will make Wednesday and Sunday practices go much smoother. I would love for everyone to play 2-3 times per week, but at the VERY LEAST, please try to play your pipes for 15 minutes on Tuesday and tune them as best you can. This will help out tremendously.

Snoop's departure will be a significant adjustment for all of us, but I'm hoping you'll all bear with me during this transistion. Things will be done a little differently (and may change week to week, depending on what works), but I think once we establish a patern, we can expect some good results.

Last, Frank is working very hard on getting our students up to speed, but I would like to break them down into groups so that their progress can continue at the proper levels. This may require some people to help with individual students at some times. The contest band will be best served if Frank can be finished with students in time to join us for our contest work from the start.

As always, please let me know if you cannot make it to practice on Wednesday nights, either through this message board or by phone.

I hope these little notes will help establish the proper expectations for Wednesday practices.

Well, as already mentioned, the results weren't that great. To correct a little inacuracy - we beat Inis Fada, not Rosin Dubh. Still counts as a local band with Grade IV experience. Although we took 8th overall out of 9, I think everyone should be proud of their performances. There was some concern as to whether or not we'd be ready, but I think - as Frank said - we didn't see anything on the score sheets we didn't already know, and we were ready.

I WILL say that there was NOT a lot of mention of note mistakes, and the primary problem was tuning and tempos - EASILY fixable. What that says to me is that we all know the tunes, but we're just not playing them together.... I think once we get the tempos in a manageable spot, we'll be in much better shape.

The next two contests are for the March Setting. Be prepared to come down Wednesday to work on those four tunes (Okay Snoop - you may not have to) - if you don't know them, they are Mairie's Wedding, Green Hills of Tyrol, When the Battle's O'er, and Roddy McCorley. I think we'll have about 12 pipes for those two contests, so if we can get the tuning spot on, we should be able to do well.

My only concerns about the March contests are the Bass and Tenor section. I REALLY think we need to get a Tenor instructor down ASAP, but I can’t necessarily identify one. I don't know ANYTHING about tenor drumming, and I think - in order for the tenor drummers to productive and add to the ensemble score - we need someone to show them the way. And I believe we need a Bass Drummer (surprise!) becuase Cutch is playing in the pipe section for the March contests. Any thoughts?

Last – but certainly not least – I would like to see about getting a Piping instructor for the contest band. NOT SEAMUS! And not necessarily on a regular basis. What I’m thinking, and I’ve discussed it with Snoop, is getting Chris Hamilton from City of Washington, or John Wassman from Monahan down to give us a workshop – maybe on a weekend morning… I’d like to get everyone’s feedback on this.

I think if we focus on the March sets on Wednesday nights, and keep the Medley set fresh with a Weekend practice every other weekend until Mid July (more frequently thereafter), we’ll be on schedule to have a great performance at Hunter and still do well at Bonnie Brae and Rockland. And I’d like to get that instructor – whoever it may be – down at least 3 times between now and Hunter. I haven’t looked into cost – but I think, for the betterment of the band and in light of recent developments, we should seriously consider it.

I also want to congratulate Jack Rush, Damien, Frank, and Tara on their first contest with us. A little nerve- racking, a little lengthy, but you all did a great job and have added so much to the direction and future of the band. And the 4:40 step-off time for competition probably didn’t help much either…. Oh, and thanks for the tent, Tara (no NASCAR signs, in case anyone was curious).

I've known him since I was a kid (I hope he remembers I've gotten a little better since then. I call it the "McThirsty syndrom"), and he is a solid bass player.

Please do what you can to make him feel welcome. He's doing us a favor as much as we're helping him get back into something he loves to do.

As I'd mentioned in a prior post, the entire tenor score is completed. Again, it is a work in progress, but I think it adds without being too busy.

I've taken the liberty of putting the entire score on TAPE for the tenor drummers. The tape consists of each tune individually played (by me) on pipes with the tenor accompaniment as banged out by me with some old snare drum sticks on the desk. Then, for the grand finale, I played the entire set, start to finish, with the tenor accompaniment.

This should help get the tenors up to speed by Round Hill. Sorry about the delay. Listening to it now as I dub the recordings, my tenor playing sounds a lot better with the entire set than with each tune. I was kinda feeling around for the beats from the tape of me playing. Anyway, you will have it on Wednesday.

We had a great practice Wednesday, and it looks like we'll be on target for Monmouth. It's only 15 days (2 Wednesday practices)away though, so if you're having trouble with any tunes, you should put it into overdrive right about now. The March and Strathspey's sounded pretty clean at times, but work needs to be done on the Reel and two Jigs. Espcially the parts in the Jigs where the pipers are playing by themselves... that's make-or-break stuff there.

Also, I know the Tenor Drummers have expressed an interest in competing, and I know it's too late for Monmouth, but is there any chance of getting an instructor down for them to write appropriate music? If they can get up to the point where they'd be adding to our ensemble score, I definitely think it would be worth it, but only a strong Tenor Drum instructor would be able to make that determination.

The next one after Monmouth is a MARCH ONLY contest, and I think it would be great if we could have them for that, but someone has to write a score and work with them on the set.

Thoughts?

I have pretty much all the drums at my house so the lack of actual drums is my fault! I have been working on them and getting them up to speed for the contest season but they need lots of TLC which means we need to order some parts what I need is: 4 Top Heads 4 Bottom heads 4 Bottom snares and 2 internal snares this might be a bit costly but this is what its gonna take to have the drums sounding up to par! So how do I go on about getting these items agian I am sorry I will not be at practice!

Saturday was one for the ages as far as I am concerned. I've been in warmer parades, I've been in longer and shorter parades. To me, it wasn't about the parade. For me it was the EXPERIENCE of the whole day. I didn't play very well yesterday - thanks Jim for playing each set only once! I think everyone took home a souvenier from the Alaskan band, too.

I never thought I would get to hear a homeless person play the bagpipes, at least I ASSUME he was homeless. He probably never thought he would get to play with Scottish Power, either. He's one up on me! Did he make any of the papers?

Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome back into the band. It was great to see all of the tenured members as well as meet new friends. I forgot what it was like to march 2 1/2 miles in full battle array. My legs are killing me!

Good luck this competition season. If you are going to Round Hill, I'll see you there.

That's 16 definites and 3 maybes. Cutch, I suppose if you were going to miss a job, this would be the one to do it, from a "bodies" perspective.

If you haven't done so yet, I highly recommend going to the Tunes of Glory website. There's a link from the band website. Read the forum. Lots of messages from people from all over the world already here, looking for things to do, parties, etc...It's verrrry exciting.

I e-mailed John Wassman about after parade activities. I figure if anyone will know what's going on, it would be him. He's the P/M of Monahan PB. They're playing the concert tomorrow night with Scottish Power PB.

By the way, if anyone gets a chance to hear Scottish Power, do it. Some of you have been fortunate enough to hear SFU in one of their appearances around here. It's truly inspiring to hear a top flight Grade I band.

I was with Tim Dunn last night. He genuinely seems interested in returning to the band, but I sensed he felt a little embarrassed about coming back. I am optimistic that I have him convinced to return to the fold. He said he has more free time and will be able to get down to practice.

For those who don't know, Tim started out as a student with us a few years ago, got up to playing pipes, played in a few parades, but had other obligations that caused him to stop playing. I'm sure he can scrape the rust off and get back out there. He's also a really fun guy!!!!!! (That's for you Tara)

Lets get those chanters Snoop.

Unfortunately I can't make it tonight.

However, I did want all to know that I got the entry form for the Monmouth Games, which I will be sending in this week. The contest is MAY 4. That means counting tonight we have 5 practices left. Crunch Time.

Marty

P.S. If anything of any logistical significance re saturday is discussed tonight, such as times, locations, etc., I'd appreciate an email/call tomorrow. Thanks.

Excellent practice last night. I think I heard something last night that I couldn't quite put my finger on. I know I've heard it in the past, but it hasn't been for a while. I think it's called 'PROGRESS'!!! Keep it up.

Farwell, get in contact with me. Use either this forum or my e-mail.

Sean, get off the fence and come down to practice.

Damien and Jack, work hard and get these tunes off the ground.

We had 6 last night and were missing Tara M and Brendan. With the four of you, that would make 12. That would be a sizeable pipe corps, but I'm not sure we could sustain it. I would like to go out with 10 for the selection, but I need everyone to put in the time. Otherwise, we'll probably end up going out with less.

Keep it up, tho. Last night was very encouraging for me.

What are our plans for Tartan Day (Tunes of Glory)? I don't recall if we're getting a bus or not. If not, how we're getting in to the city. If we are, when are we leaving to go in and when are we returning.

Do we have any info on the logistics of this? Where are we lining up? What time? etc.....

I have been Noticing the Shape that out current snare drums are in and its not very good. The ideal thing would be to buy a new set of drums but that can be very costly! But I think I have found the answer! Mark Humphry in Penn. Has found a simple way in which He takes the exsiting drum shell and strips it down to its orignal wood. This is what SFU has been doing to there drums in the last few years! removing the plastic coating and glue gives the drum a very bright sound!! after he does this He stains the wood you can choose from 60 colors I am thinking a red would be nice! The cost is $60.00 a shell and takes a bout 2 weeks so we would have to move soon! Then once we got the shells back I would like to give the drums a once over with new heads and whatever else might be needed! Just curious to what everyone thinks!

I would really like to make sometime to go over the contest set as a band tonight if possible. I Know we have the big game this weekend but if we could make time that would be great!! We havent gone over it on the floor in two weeks. Remeber when we sat down and disscussed the contest's we wanted to play and I made my point that march is a wash. This is what I meant. I am not blaming anyone at all and am not trying to sound mean. I would just like to go over it a bit tonight! The more practice we put in now the better our chances are to place at contests!! And any word or ideas for a bass drummer for the contest season??

Let's have a good showing Wednesday, and please make them feel welcome. The first time at any new band practice can be filled with apprehension.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on what happened with this gig.

Apparently... Christ the King called to book us, we sent them a contract, and they never signed the contract and sent it back. I'm guessing (and this was Snoop's original thought about what likely happened) that CTK received the contract and said "woohoo! Got a band!" and didn't think they had to send it back.

Since we never got the contract, we never booked the gig and it never made the schedule... just an FYI.

I would like to get the band website updated. Pat has done such an incredible job keeping it fresh, but I would like to get others involved in that project. Would someone be willing to write a round table update? Topics that come to mind are:

First Parade
First Dance
We're getting a new tent
Congrats to Tara, first job with the band
Tim Dunn
Miscellaneous personal tidbits

In my opinion, we also need new/more photos of the band. Claire Patton was busy snapping away this past weekend. Maybe we can get her photos and get them up on the site.

At the last parade many commented that the Wantagh band had slightly larger and much nicer flags on their pipes. Based on discussions that day and last night I was dispatched to find similar flags. I found them. They are nylon and will not be affected by weather. They are 8"x12" and trimmed with gold. The list price is $15 per flag but we can get them for $12 if we buy 20. They will put 2 grommets on the end of the flag to attach to the pipes. If I call back today I can have them tomorrow and we'll have them for this weekend. I have already spoken to Lane and Snoop who are for it, as am I. I know this is short notice, but unless anyone strongly objects, I'm going to order them later today. Anyone who wants to respond can post a reply, email me or call me today at 516-378-1700. Thanks.

I had alluded to this in an earlier post, but I'm pretty sure I've confirmed it. I want to keep everyone informed about what's going on with the band.

We will be getting two more pipers in the pipe corps after the St. Pat's season. They are both ex-Tara Pipe Band players and are both very good players.

I spoke with one of them last night, who advised me he wanted to join a band he could be proud to say he is a member of, and our band is one he could say that about. Needless to say, that felt pretty good.

Let's all try to keep the band's sound up where we've had it. We can easily improve it by playing our pipes at least twice a week. "Good things happen when you play your pipes".

Hopefully, we can continue to get more players who want to be part of a band they can be proud of. Keep up the good work, everyone.

With the departure of Bill Krumholz we are left with a void in the contest band tent department. The old tents we have are basically shot and would need new tarps and several new pieces of hardware. You may also remember how much easier Bill's tent was to put up and take down. It also seemed to be a bit more sturdy. I recall hearing that he got it at Costco. I'm going to try to price one tonight or tomorrow and have the info for tomorrow night. If it's not too pricey I'm going to propose that we get one.

It may be useful (and it may not, I don't know) to have as many hyperlinks as possible. If you're name isn't hyperlinked, it means A) I don't have your email address, and/or B) I wasn't sure if you'd want to be linked. If you wouldn't mind having a hyperlink to your name on the band site, please let me know and I'll set you up right away. And if you don't have an email, I can still set you with and americanceltic.org email address....

Cutch told me the other day he needs a new jacket. I'm going to try to switch with him to see if my jacket fits him. But it brings up a good point.

CHECK OUT ALL YOUR GEAR BEFORE THE FIRST PARADE! Your kilt may have shrunk (=-), or you jacket may have as well. Your hose may have moth holes, or you ghillies may need to be re-soled. Your patches on your shirt may have faded.

If you need a NEW something, please contact Jack Meehan (you can even use this forum). If it's something the band provides, and we have a spare, you'll get it. The band does not provide cords for the pipes, ghillies, shirts or bagpipes. Everything else is pretty much covered. Do you need a raincape (Tara Meany)? Double check everything.

Oh man, this is great!!! Now we can stop using up bandwidth on our band message board. It's also a great place to get more timely feedback on decisions the band may need to make. I'll start us off.

We may be able to acquire two more Shepherd, Mark II Chanters. I think we have 5 to spare and that everyone except Mike Farwell now has one. That would leave us with 4. Do we think 4 is ample? If we were to get 2 new bagpipers in the near future, we'd have 2 spare. Then you've got Paul Pearo coming on board soon, and we're down to 1 spare. I think I should contact Loch Norman and inquire as to the status of these other two chanters.
