• Texas Pro Stock Association -- John Harrison, 22:16:24 10/04/02 Fri [2]
  Well, we're getting closer to the next event. As you probably know, it's October 26th at Sealy running in conjunction with the Texas Pro Mod Championships.
  
  We are done with the rules for this event, and I thought you all might like to know what they will be.
  
  This class is for the tube car type chassis cars that a lot of you have put away after getting tired of bracket racing.
  
  1. The basic car will be at 2450# with a big block engine, one carburetor, cast intake, a standard deck block, and conventional Chevy valve configuration. The reasoning for the standard deck height is that it limits the cubic inches to a max of about 580. At this time and for this race, there will be no pro stock-type valve arrangement heads allowed. A 2 carb. arrangement will be allowed at a 100# penalty. Any tunnel ram intake will be at a 50# penalty. A tall deck block will be allowed this race at a 100# penalty. Reason being, we have had several inquiries about the block deal, and we won't P&G at this event, and this makes the possible extra cubic inches a penalty. Alcohol fuel will carry 50# penalty.
  
  2. Basic small blocks will be allowed to run a conventional 23 degree head, any carbs, any manifold, and any fuel at 2200#.
  
  3. Any other inline valve small block head will be penalized 50# for head design, 50# for any tunnel ram manifold, and 50# for 2 carbs., and 50# for alcohol. The canted valve heads will not be allowed to run at this race.
  
  4. Any automatic transmission will be allowed. No clutches, Brunos, or other type aftermarket trans. will be allowed.
  
  5. Any size tires allowed.
  
  What we are trying to do here is even the field at a pounds per horsepower figure of about 2.7 pounds/ HP. We figure that a conventional valve BBC with the 1 carb and cast intake will be limited to how much horsepower it can make because of the limited air flow of that type head/manifold combo. We have looked at quite a few combinations and have come up with this as a way to level the table. This race is designed to see how it works out, and for next year, we will make the perminant rules based upon what we see the 26th.
  
  This class is being put on for the benefit of the racers, and your response will determine the future of the class. The 2 guys who dreamed this up are fundingthis out of pocket, and are getting no return whatsoever.This is not a scheme to make a bunch of money, it is designed to make heads up, no breakout racing more popular here in South Texas.
  
  We pay a full purse regardless of car count as was evidenced at the first race. As I said... this depends on your participation to succeed. You will have to support this or it won't be worthwhile for Glen at Sealy or any other track owner to have us come. Car count and spectator appeal is what the tracks live for, and if we make a good show, we will be in demand. At the first event, when the cars came up to run, the people came to the stands to watch... every round. If they hadn't liked what they saw the first qualifier, they wouldn't have come back to watch more. The cars were really even at 5.38 best to a 5.54 worst. More than 1 race was decided by reaction time. The spectators couldn't pick a winner til the light came on. We want this to be a driver's / tuner's race series.
  
  Drag your car out and bring it. We will make every effort to get you into the program. Just don't expect us to let you run a combination that we have said won't be allowed. We won't make exception.

    • john you know i have the utmost respect for you but like i've said before my friend in corpus has gone 5.0's with unported heads & 13 to1 at 557 in. & easily goes low 5.20's with 1 1/2 sec on the controller with ported heads & intake & shaving the heads a little engine systems has told him he should pick up another 75 to 100 h.p from his already 880 h.p ..so what about the 1000 plus h.p motors which is easy to get all it takes is $$$ for 20,000 sonny can give me 1050 easy maybe 1075 i just don't have 20,000 (NT) -- jeff rytter, 18:21:50 10/07/02 Mon

  Jeff, been reading some of your posts. Here's my thoughts. A short deck BB, cast intake, conventional heads, single four, is still limited anywhere you slice it. I'm sure someone could throw a bunch of money at one but the gains would be minimal. You seem to forget that chassis setup and driving skills are a very big part of this equation. Now if someone was cheating, that's a different story and I can assure you that anyone caught would never race with us again. Cheating requires a criminal mind and we don't have the time for people like that. And if you're worried someone will dominate this thing, not a problem. As I stated before, this is a dictatorship not a democracy and the first racer that wins twice in a row will be shot on sight. Problem solved.

    • Jeff, everybody needs to realize that we still have a long way to go before we set the rules for next year. But we have to have some rules to start with and go from there. Remember, we still haven't had a BIG BB down the track yet (got some comin) and we still have more questions than answers.   Well, Bucky called and told me the obvious... I lowered the minimum for the 23 degree motors and didn't think (duh) about the implications of lowering the 2300 to 2200 on the adds for the other inline valve combos...
  
  My intent is to lower the 23 degree weight to 2200# but leave the adds like Bucky has at 2450 for now.
  
  Sorry for the confusion... (Bucky was happy thinking he got a 100# plum!) Sorry Bucky. We will review everything after this race and should have a better feel for it all.

  Ok We have some rules that look firm. Lets race off of them and see what happens.
  Small block guys. Looks like this winter max. bore & stroke will be required. Why would anyone want to have 23 degree heads when the others are about the same cost? Get rid of outdated stuff. Everyone will have to spend some. Heads up never will be cheap but still should be affordable to most.
  To all super racers. This is heads up! No more opening up the stop to go faster. Max bore/stroke, cam, and compression if you want to be a player. There a few cars that are already ahead now and should show up. So when they do, thats where everyone needs to be in performance.

  I would like to add a couple of comments to what John had been saying. If you want to race, please say so. We originally had not planned to race this year at all. Glen offered a couple of dates and after some discussion we felt it would be a good thing even though we felt ill prepared. So if we seem a little anxious, it's because we have a real opportunity to fine tune a lot of issues and we can start next year with some experience. Now here's the big picture. This next race is perfect for us to showcase the cars in a big show. Pro Mods, Big Dogs, and lots of spectators. We have invited some potential sponsors to this event in hopes of securing a committment for next year. Obviously, we need a good turnout. If you truly want this program to succeed, then you need to participate. A sponsor committment means purse money and exposure. We need both. By the time this next race comes around I figure Mike and I will have sunk about 4 grand in this deal. We ordered windshield decals, comp.numbers, t-shirts, golf shirts, banners, advertising and the list goes on. I suppose we could have built a couple of cars and raced each other, but we'd have gotten tired of that. So here we are. We want to have a professional organization with good purse money, a points race, a big year end dinner and some great racing with some great people. We have a fantastic opportunity here.   For this next race, we are not going to let these heads run. I still am waiting for an answer to how many names you can come up with who would race if we let them run. Send me e-mails and let me know if you REALLY would like to race with us and REALLY have a car with these heads that would fit the rules. I haven't had EVEN ONE call or e-mail in this regard.
  
  I want as many cars as possible to come out and try us on. If we can show a good response, Glen will make a place for us in his next year's plan. Now this is on you. If you are holding out, all you are doing is making sure that there is no place for these types of cars to run heads up.

You refer to car count, but I seem to recall that the pro gas guys started to fall out after the "comp motors" showed up. We are looking at every option for next year, and will try to come up with a plan for all. Just don't want to exclude a bunch to al;low a few... see what I mean?   John I am not trying to hurt anyone or make this thing fail. I was responding to your post asking if you allowed the splayed valve to run. Who would show up. I was telling you what I was told. I talked to Robert thursday night about IHRA Modified being cancelled and mentioned this deal and he told me flat out NO. SO if he said something different to you then he either cant make his mind up or he is lying to one of us. I havent given you any "grief." I called you and asked you what your idea of "close" was and that was the only time I have contacted you. I like the rules as they are. I have tried helping this thing get off the ground. I forwarded Mark my contact list for the Pro Gas guys with e mails and phone #'s I even gave him the pay out structure we used to use. We are busting our ass to try and get a motor that can hang together for the 26th. Also quit refering that pro gas failed due to me or any other 1 one individual. I cant believe that me saying scott and faerman were not going to race was derogitory to the club? Hell I was just answering your question. Truth be known I do not want the splayed valve motors in this deal. I know first hand what they are capable of.   Jeff. Your post is in direct contradiction to what Robert Faerman was asking us to do at the last event. This is a good example of why things like what we are trying to do are so difficult to pull off. NO RACER COOPERATION! IT's a "you either make my car a winner or I'll boycott!" We are trying to get something together for the good of the racers, and some of you are trying to hurt it...to keep it from succeeding... why would you do that? We are needing you racers to help us make this work, not tear it down with all the negative bullshit. It seems to me that the Pro Gas deal didn't work the way it was structured, and since we are trying something different, you want it to fail too. If you have some POSITIVE suggestions... MAKE 'EM! Give it up with the negatives. We have made concessions to allow you to have more freedom with the combination YOU me have... and still you give us grief... I don't get it!

  I realize that we only had 6 cars at the first race. We rushed the first event so we could get 2 tune-up races in before the end of the season, and a lot of the racers say they didn't get the word or they would have come.
  
  What we are asking is that if you know someone who has a car that fits, tell 'em! Ask them to come and run this event so we can get a feel for what will fly for next year.
  
  Some of you don't fully realize that if this works, you will have another venue to run your car and have some fun.
  
  We are not excluding anyone. Read the above post about the rules, and you will understand why we are doing it this way. The problem is to try anjd get as many combinations as possible at weights that are realistic. A 632" Big Chief motor would have to weigh about 3200# to run anywhere close to a 23 degree small block at any weight.
  
  We are asking for cooperation...

  As I said... I do feel that the 23 degree cars need to be lighter, but can they get there? If I said... "OK, all you 23 degree guys can run at 1500#", what difference would it make? I will drop the minimum for the 23 degree heads to 2200# with a single cast intake if it will make any difference.
  
  When this all started, this was gonna be a strictly Big Block class...Now we have let several small block combos in and are still getting blasted for being discriminatory! Damn... they said this was gonna be tough! I shudda listened!
  
  Hear this again... I am talking as loud as I can...SUBMIT YOUR RATIONAL SUGGESTIONS TO US AND WE WILL LISTEN AND CONSIDER THEM ALL! We are looking for car count, but we will not make exception to gain one car and lose two or more.
  
  Help us! We are doing this to make more places for more cars to race. This is for your benefit... the more cooperation we get, the smoother things will go. You will have to make some compromises here. We can't do it all for you. There are just so many ways we can even this thing. You will have to make your stuff fit.

  Since I am the tech guy, I guess I should answer the points that have been raised so far.
  
  As to teching of the cars more closely, all the cars that we had at the first race were known to us, and the racers aren’t known to cheat or punish the rules, so we just let it wing itself. We made sure the engines and carburetors (and 1 injector) were what they were supposed to be and that the weights were correct for the combination.
  
  We will look at the cars more closely at the October race and will check for power adders, and fuel irregularities. (Alcohol will be allowed with a small weight penalty)
  
  We have had a number of inquiries since the race as to what we are going to allow in the future. Every racer has a slightly different combination than the next, and it will be a real challenge to make parity for all.
  
  Let me explain how we came up with the first set of rules... I have a concept that I call running against a brick wall. What that means as simply as I can explain it is that with the stock valve configuration, a cast intake, and a single carburetor, you can only flow so much air. It takes air flow to make horsepower, and with these restrictions, there is just so much power you can make. The point of the low deck block is to limit the cubic inches to a maximum of 582. This makes it to where nobody can have a real engine advantage. We tried to make a class where the average motor makes about 900-925 horsepower, and weighs 2450#. I know there are exceptions to this premise, but most will fall here somewhere.
  
  We decided to let the small block guys join us, and gave them a 150# advantage with the same restrictions since they are horsepower challenged. (We could have made them lighter, but how many cars are there that will get that light?) We allowed any inline valve head at a 50# penalty, a second carburetor with a 50 # penalty, and any tunnel ram intake with a 50# penalty. This combination at about 400-434 cubic inches will make between 875 and 925 horsepower at 2450#... see where this is going?
  
  Conrad has some suggestions that would bring some more cars, but when you allow more head freedom, you have the problem of how to keep it even. The general answer is weight/inch... However, that makes it harder to police. That means P&G at every race, and sealed engines, and more opportunities for stretching the rules for an unfair advantage. What I asked him was how many cars would this add to the show, and how many would not come if we opened up the head rule? I need an answer to this!
  
  I still feel like the simpler the rules, the fairer the parity for all, and this makes closer races which makes the spectators stay interested, and makes a better show. I still feel like the factory valve arrangement is the best way to accomplish this, but I could be wrong.

  • I think your punishing the smallblocks kinda hard. The baddest smallblock I have ever heard of is hard pressed to make 1000 hp. Most of your 18 degree stuff makes about 750 to 850 anything above that and its grenade time ask Salsberry :) Sorry Mark.. A big block can be made to make 12 to 1300 hp fairly easily just call shaffroff with your visa.   Just to remind John and everyone involved. I still think the cast manifold small block still needs a better weight break in order to compete. REMEMBER Danny only has a 468 in his car and Bucky was running right with him with a 420+ ci 18 degree with a sheet metal manifold and 2 carbs. Yes I realize Bucky was at 2450 # but what do you think is going to happen when a BIG motor shows up??? I think the 2 carb sheet metal manifold small block is pretty close but the ones with a cast manifold dont stand a chance in hell when the big motors start rolling out. I am not bitching or whining Just stating what I feel is going to happen. I will try and be there for the 2nd race.

  Just how many of the cars that showed were paid to be there? Know 1 was and need to make expense journal entry. Ya'll have a chance to get a good deal going again, just make it fair and most important - AFFORDABLE, put some weight on the "not so affordable" combos, give the poor 23 degree small blocks more weight break and you might not have to get out the checkbook again. Use the two cars that were in the final and see how many more mid 5.30 to 5.40 combos you can come up with - if you build it, they will come!

  The race cars that showed up for sat.race(9-28)did not have to take apart their cars during tech. Know one was looking for the NOS setups or any other power maker. Tech should be done better than it was. It should go a little further than a chassis cert. and weight. And maybe as far as checking fuel. Over-all, the show on sat.went pretty well.   I'd like to echo what Mike said and thank all the guys who helped make our first effort a great one. The racing was better than I could have hoped for. Especially the second round when Danny Liebham (5.42) holeshot Rick Hanson (5.41)for the win and then Bucky ran the bye with another 5.42. In the finals, Bucky had a problem on the line. Danny cut a .449 and ran a 5.41 and Bucky chased him with a 5.38. Hated to see Bucky have a problem and I can assure you he was itchin' for a rematch. Thanks also to Mike Stallings for bringin the Mustang (new car on the way), Jonathan Johnson, and Donald "Duck" Hughes for stepping up and giving us a great show. I was watching the spectators when the cars came up to run and you could see the stands get fuller and the intensity go up. Fans just love heads up racing. It was very cool. Also need to thank "Big John" Harrison and Bobby Humphrey for keeping it all straight. And last, but not least, Glen & Dee Brabham and all the staff at Lone Star for letting us come play in their backyard. Now we need to get back to work and get ready for the Oct. 26th race. Pro Mods, Big Dogs, and Texas Pro Stocks. It's a heads up weekend, so get your hot rod ready and come race with us. It's all good, kids!

• TPSA inaugural race -- John Harrison, 08:09:10 09/29/02 Sun [2]
  Well, the inaugural TPSA race at Lone Star Raceway in Sealy is in the books. We would like to thank those of you who came to race and those who made the trip to see what we are all about. We had a good show with some quality cars. Would have liked a few more cars for the first race, but the cars that made the trip put on a good showing.
  
  The times ranged between 5.38 and 5.54 for each car's best ET. This made for good, close racing and at least two races were won on hole shots.
  
  The final came down to Danny Liebham and Bucky Allison and was won by Danny with a 5.42. Bucky ran a faster but later 5.38.
  
  We hope this event will display our intent to further heads-up racing in the South Texas area, and show the others with our type cars that they can come and compete with us.
  
  The next event is the weekend ofOctober 26th, and will run in conjunction with the Texas Pro Mod Championship race at Sealy.

  I am the competition director for the TPSA and I want first to state some simple facts.
  
  1. We want to make this organization friendly to as many cars as possible. Unfortunately, with only one class, there is just no way to make everyone absolutely equal. It will require some cooperation from owners to make some small adjustments so we can include as many of you as possible. We can't possibly make an absolutely level playing field with as many different combinations as there are out there. Somebody will have to make some allowances.
  
  2. We want to include the small block cars as well, but we are still trying to figure out a way to make them competitive without making a couple of them dominant. I am leaning towards an inline valve rule for the small block cars, and that will exclude the ex-PSTruck motors and the $35,000 comp engines. I realize that the 18-14 degree heads will have an advantage over the 23 degree stuff, and will probably carry a weight penalty. (still thinking on that one) Also, there are a lot of SB guys with a 2-carb set-up, and it would cost a bunch for them to change to a 1-carb. May do a weight thing for them too.
  
  3. As to the big block guys, this is a whole 'nother can of worms. 1 carb, 2 carb, heads, cubic inches, wow! it's mind boggling to try to level this one. To P&G everyone would be time prohibitive, and that's why we came up with the short deck thing to limit inches. Have you got any idea how long it would take to P&G lets say 20 cars? Bad idea. I feel like the factory valve angle thing is good to level the cost of the upper end, but we will consider any suggestions after this first event. We are looking for any RATIONAL suggestions that are not just intended to be inflamatory in nature. If you ain't got something constructive to say.... keep it to yourself. We are looking for the racers to help us with this if they want it to succeed.
  
  4. We also realize there is no way we won't exclude some cars... there's just no way you can make them all fit into 1 class. We don't mean to hurt anyone's feelers here... just how it shapes up.
  
  Again, I say: We welcome all RATIONAL suggestions. If you haven't got anything constructive to say....keep it to yourself and save the web space.
  
  Bottom line here is... if you have a car that is CLOSE to meeting the rules, bring it to this first event and we will try to get you in the show. If you chose to stay home and not participate, how can we determine if you have a place with us of not? We will try to work with everybody, (except for the Big Chief head deal) and will assess weight penalties to those of you who are close. Just bring some ballast with you if you think your situation is workable. Come race with us and lets have a good time... this is a hobby, and is supposed to be fun!

  HEY guy, get your facts straight, I'm not "you guys". Never read anywhere that acussed TPSA of getting rich. Only seen where a few questions were asked. I did see where others read things that were not there and thought it. Please read questions as they are.
  Being unable to attend the short notice meeting and not living around the corner my "doggin" was my meeting. Some of us have this avenue to express our thoughts/ideas. Hell ain't this America ?
  We are seeing some of our ideas in todays message by John.
  As for "counting me out" (of the race) I most surely said that and had no reason to race when I could not make the existing rules. Why show up and support when I can't play.(under existing rules)
  I'm for fair and equal rules. Today, 9/25 John opened up the rules and also talked about several things, If you were close bring it on. (maybe a little weight added)
  If I had known that a week or so in advance my answer probably would have been different. No way to finish in two days. If it works out I'll be there in OCT. and will support/race as long as the rules don't phase me out.
  SO PLEASE read carefully and don't include me in what others say. Come on over after the races and have a cold one on me, I don't care who racer x is.

  TPSA Update - Ok boys and girls, almost time to go have some fun at the track. (If the storm doesn’t rain on our parade) Anyway, here’s some new info. Payout will be as follows: $1,500.00 Purse. First round winners - $50.00 Semi’s - $100.00 Runner-up - $200.00 Winner - $500.00 Also, winner receives a weekend trip to Vegas with Pamela Anderson. If for some unknown reason Pamela is unable to attend, then the winner and runner up will receive a nice trophy for the mantle. Not a bad deal. I’d just like to let everyone know that Mike and myself and all the rest of us are committed to seeing this program work.   Read both your posts, and I'd like to clarify a few things. First, I'm really happy with the bb rules and I really believe they're as fair and as simple as we could have come up with. I'm sure I dumped some cars with the "short deck" rule, but my goal is long term not just one race and I wanted to firm it up because I've heard from a bunch of guys that want to build cars during the offseason. That being said, the small block rules were put together by a bunch of guys with rat motors. I realize the meeting was short notice, but one of the reasons for having it was to try and do something for the sb guys. Obviously, our first attempt was not embraced by our viewers. Like I stated earlier, bb are set and for the sb it's a start. Instead of picking up your toys and going home, why not come to the race and talk to us. We're not sb guys and I've asked several times if someone is interested in helping out with this thing and get some sb rules together. So far all I've heard is the sb rules are crap and we ain't comin. Well, get involved and do something about it. Even if your car fits the rules and you don't think it will hang, who cares? Don't have a car ready yet, come on out and meet us and support this thing. This is just to have some fun and pay out some money and meet some new people that want to see this program succeed.   The discussions hear started as constructive criticism and have now turned to a lobby effort. I see no "whining" - just stating facts by the teacher. I was one of the original 12 members that started the Texas Pro Gas Assoc. From the start it was doomed. That group had the same basic idea - heads up and affordable. We had some great races in the beginning, however anyone could see it would be short lived. The cars were running 6.0's to 5.50's the first year. The best headed small block at that time was Matt Tolberts '67 vette, it had an 18 degree, single carb combo and ran high 5.50's to consistent 5.60's. Then others started out to top that. I lobbied after the first year to outlaw 18 degree and better heads. No one listened, they lobbied for what fit "their" budget and combo. Then came along a C altered Comp car - legal to the bone. (no one looked at the national records to see what was possible to run given the rules). The ole' 358 splayed valve headed, 2 carb, sheet metal intake - 5 teen running dyno mule - Kicked Ass and took names. Then people stepped up again + there goes the affordable and no one wanted to "outlaw" anything for fear of making somebody mad or they were building it already! What I'm saying is:
  
  Work on COMPETIVE sets of rules. Its a very difficult chore, I've been there, but my ideas where never heard. I did not come to the meeting because I've been to enough of them and this board can serve the same purpose, from the comforts of my home. I have a car, my partner has a better car, we have some decent parts, but could never hang with current rules, so we'll stick to comp plans for next year.
  
  If things change we would love to come play and the money is not a big deal either, if we have a chance at going a few rounds. The teacher has some valid points and those who keep referring to the SB cars being "whiners" will get a dose of the same experience some experienced in Pro Gas - death to a good idea! PRO MOD around here was the Texas OUTLAW Pro Stock Assoc. - it too got out of hand and became a non-affordable class to the average racer. Good Luck and I wish ya'll the best of luck, I'd rather run locally this weekend than have to pack up and go to Ennis and breakout race, but we have a chance at going rounds.   Yes, Your rules committee can set your rules and people can either race or not. I don't see people winning, but people just trying to make a little sense. Either small or big block people are making alot of common sense. No one seems to care about the majority of racers. I think along down the road you may listen, hopefully it won't be too late. I sure would be interested in the amount of people not racing as to who is a racin'. Maybe if you guys also knew that it could change one's mind. Good Luck Anyway, But Count Me Out

  Reher and Morrison advertise thier super series 555 to make 910 hp. Well lets do the math kids. 2450 min wt for BBC divided by 910 HP = 2.69 pounds per horse power.
  With the current rules on the small blocks to make the same 2.69 punds per horse power a small block with a cast manifold and single carb will have to make 855 horse power.
  Remember this is supposed to be "affordable" try making 855 hp out of a smallblock with a cast manifold and make it affordable!!!! My guess on a small block with a cast manifold and single carb is 750 -800 hp if you are lucky. That is probably an OVERESTIMATE!! but lets use those #s anyways. 2300/750 hp = 3.06 pounds per hp or in other words FIRST ROUND DUCK!!! 2300/800hp = 2.875 still a duck. THE EASIEST SOLUTION IS EITHER ALLOW SHEET METAL INTAKES AND 2 FOURS ON THE SMALL BLOCKS @ 2300 OR LOWER THE WEIGHT BREAK TO EITHER 2150 OR 2200 BEFORE YOU SAY I AM CRAZY DO THE MATH AND YOU WILL SEE.
  Lets do some more math. 910 hp divided by 555 =1.64 horsepower per inch on the big block. Now lets look at the small block. 855 hp divided by 434 = 2 hp per inch. I have built a 434 before had over $12,000 in the shortblock alone. Had pontiac alum heads sheet metal intake single dominator it made 760 hp / 605 ft lbs torque. The bigger the motor the less per inch it will make typically. I know of a 396 ci buick headed small block w/ sheet metal intake 2 carbs made 835 hp thats 2.10 per inch on the buick. Now take the manifold off and put a cast manifold single 4 on it How much power do you think he will lose by doing this??? A hell of a lot more than .10 per inch I can promise you that.
  Speaking of affordability. Whats the $100.00 membership fee for? Whats it going to be used for exactly? Are you buying scales? or other equipment? Going to a points fund?

  Would love to race this but the small block is at a big time disadvantage. I doubt it will ever be equal without going to weight per inch but at least get it close. I was hoping for small blocks with a bigger wt break. I dont want to bitch too much just giving my opinion. Like Marvin stated the small blocks are at least a pound or more per inch heavier than the rat motors are?????? Where did yall get the 2300 from?? did anyone put some thought into this or was it just a number that was blurted out? I also dont agree with the alcohol. At least everyone should run the same fuel even if we run different combo's With different fuel types you will NEVER get control of this thing. Need to limit the variables.   TPSA UPDATE - Had a great meeting last night and the turnout was better than expected. No bitchin or whining. Just some good input and some real progress. After all kids, this is just a hobby. What it really comes down to is just trying to have a little fun and not mortgage the house to do it. We did manage to get the rules revised to where we feel the goals of the association and everyone’s feedback was addressed. Number one. For the big blocks the only change is to allow “Short Deck Blocks Only”. The reason being is that it’s simple to police and it limit’s the cubic inch. We feel it’s the very best combination we can run that is, like our motto says, Fair - Competitive - Affordable. For the small blocks, we arrived at this combination. Single carb, cast intake, any cylinder head or cubic inch and 2300# minimum weight. All other rules still apply. If anyone has a Ford or Mopar combo, let us know so we can forward it to the rules committee. For the small blocks, it’s a start. For the big blocks, we’re done. I do not foresee any major changes other than some weight adjustments. Also decided was to have a yearly membership fee of $100.00 per year and a points series starting in 2003. Race entry fee will stay at $50.00. Check the website as we finish adding all the new information. With this behind us, we need to move forward with our program and get these two races done this year. If anyone knows they will be able to attend, please email or call and thanks to everyone that came out.

  Looks like you all made some progress on some issues.
  Sure do not expect small blocks to show up! I know it's a start as stated but WOW !!! Don't let them take advantage of yall. A 555 cubic inch @ 2450 lbs is 4.41 lbs per inch while a 434 inch (BIG small block) @ 2300 lbs is 5.30 lbs per inch. Go figure!
  Even @ 2100 lbs this is 4.84 lbs per inch, but this would be closer due to the head rule. Did any small block racers show up at the meeting? If they did ,are they going to show for the race? I surely don't want to miss that small block that can compete with yall . Don't want to bitch, but as stated by you FAIR IS FIRST ON YOUR LIST. Can't see it even close here. Thanks anyway.

  I was led to believe that most of you guys wanted tube frame chassis type cars with reasonable engines. I can see this but can't see the reasons behind some rules. What difference does the block have in cost. Most racers try to buy dependable parts and assemble it the most reliable way.
  You killed alot of guys on the blocks. As far as heads, it will cost more to modify OEM heads than aftermarket DARTS or BRODIX, ect. Watch your guys doing this after you run for a while. (that is if you get any cars to survive) Remeber this is heads up not S.G. People will modify more to get faster. What difference does a trans make as long as it is auto? Most anyone with tube frame cars can afford reliable equipment and have been there with inferior parts. Rules are rules but give this a thought. Alot of guys can't show that were very interested. Is this a $100.00 membership for 02 or just entry fee? Cannot see paying $100.00 for something that can change on not make it two races. How many cars will show as of now? (with existing rules) Please look at the big pictere here THE ABOVE IS AFFORDABLE TO ANY GUY/GAL WITH TUBE TYPE/SUPER GAS CARS What's wrong with P&G for size? (maybe the old PRO GAS can help here. YOU ARE GOING TO NEED ALOT OF CARS FOR A GOOD SHOW. IS THIS ALL RUN OR WHAT? More home work is needed here

  • The rules state OEM or aftermarket conventional head. The cost of the block is not the issue. It forces the ci limit and is easier to police. Entry fee is $50.00 each for the two races this year.   1 WE all have one thing in common , that's weight. Drag racing before bracket racing was always based weight to cubic inches to get everyone on the same equal field.
  2 Are a set of conventional heads that are welded up, rolled over to change valve angle, and max ported any cheaper than Big Chiefs?
  3 Gasoline only
  4 One class for all (Small/big blocks with weight breaks)
  
  This will take longer to check all cars at first but will get shorter as everyone is checked for inches at the begining. After checking everyone this can be shortened to only checking The first and second place winners

  TPSA UPDATE - It’s time to have a meeting of the minds. Anyone interested in this program is welcome to join us on Sunday evening at 7pm. The meeting will be held at Outlaw Race Cars, 10815 Warwana, Suite 303, Houston, Texas. The general area is Beltway 8 @ Hammerly. We will be posting directions and you can also call. The consensus is that in order for these two scheduled races to be productive, we need as much input as possible and as many cars as possible to attend. We have a great opportunity to use these races to fine tune the rules and setup the association so when the 2003 season starts we’ll be ready to go. At this point, we are open to any constructive suggestions and everything will be on the table for discussion from small blocks to big heads and whatever else is on your mind. So, if anyone wants to be heard, this is the time. In addition to any rules discussions, we also need to get this deal better structured. A committee needs to formed and anyone wanting to donate their time and help make this program succeed is certainly welcome. Their will be an agenda we will follow and once a topic has been discussed, we will move on to the next. This will not be an all night bitch session. The meeting will start promptly at 7pm and end at 10pm. So, get your momma to give a you a hall pass and come on out.

  Just to let you know. I have already invested the above and dont care to do it again. When I first got involved with the texas pro gas association. I started the web site for them. Went to all the races took pictures. Reported on the races. Then I went arround to several places in houston and texas and secured about $2,500 per race in sponsorship money. I also talked to several tracks. Had races scheduled all over texas. I even had a deal working on a Texas versus Louisiana shootout. I did all this on my own. Everyone in the club was relly pumped up over it all. The funny thing is when it came to the week before a scheduled race I and a few others would call around to get a car count. All we got was excuses. From little league to garage sale you name it we heard it. Then I had the joy to call the tracks and expain to them why we only had 3 cars show up at sealy. Not long after that I resigned as president of the texas pro gas association. For the record texas pro gas did not really die because of the rules. They definately hurt it but that is not what killed it. What happened is everyone broke or crashed thier cars the within about 6 months.
  1st Marvin Phillips crashed his car at Temple.
  2nd Donald Hughes crashed his at Houston.
  3rd Tracy Stapp blew his up in pre season testing.
  4th Eddie Conrad blew his up at 1st race of the year
  5th Mark Salsberry's new car was still being completed.
  6th Scott Benham was in a NHRA points battle and did not have time to run that year.
  7th John Clegg hurt his at the 1st race of the year also.
  8th Too many people to count were "no shows" including the mustang in your picture section.
  so this basically left Robert Faerman, Danny Liebham and Jeff storrs as the sole surviving cars after only 2 races so we had no choice but to fold. So as far as someone stepping up with free money and time to add a "B" team to your roster... Well dont hold your breath. Plus there is not enough cars to warrant separate classes. THE END.

  .Hey TPSA I like your concept but don't like the rules???? I know what your thinking, well here we go again another cry baby that wants you change the rules to fit there car , but please here me out !!!!! I have and have 5 other fellow gassers that have cars that weigh aprox 2350# , no NOS , auto/glides , BUT WE HAVE 555, 565, 572" BBs WITH BIG CHIEF HEADS we would love to take of the throttle stops and come do some heads up racing with you guys. We can't justify/and are not going to change our cylinder heads/motors to race in your assocociation. We appreciate your intentions in trying to create and affordable style of headsup racing and I think your on the right track with No Nitrous , NO Blowers , No Turbos , No Lenco , No Clutches , No Small Block X Pro Stock Truck Motors this takes out alot of the high dollar high maintence issues (like the KOTH guys, those NOS motors are out after every race and if you dont have a bruno you cant hang). LIKE I SAID WE LIKE YOUR CONCEPT !! I don't know what your issue is with big chief style heads ? You can buy 18 deg's from Shafiroff and some others for $4500. ported and ready to go and guys are going to spend $3000./$3500.plus on a set of maxed 355s. HERES AND IDEA; Why dont you let big cheifs in but limit them to SHORT DECK BLOCKS and single four (cast manifold) this would limit them to 565/572 max and let the conventional style BB cylinder headed guys run UNLIMITED cubic inch and maybe 2 - 4s on a cast tunnle ram , this should create equal horsepower and level playing field and you also don't have to deal with pumping the motors all you have to do is weigh the cars. You also might think of dropping the weight to 2350# (like the pro stocks) almost all the super class tube frame cars can meet that weight and it just makes the cars a little faster. This should put the cars down in the 4s in the 1/8 & 7s in the 1/4. I/WE THINK THIS WOULD OPEN YOUR FORMAT UP TO ALOT MORE RACERS. You will have alot more cars per event and you should have alot more SPECTATORS. I think your right about one thing spectators want to see heads up racing, but they want to see FAST heads up racing and if you get the cars in the 4s/7s the spectators will come out and support your program. Thanks for hearing my opinion and I wish you guys luck with your effort, I hope I can race in your program???

  • Affordability is relative I suppose. This class was designed for tube cars and rat motors. Lightweight & big hp. Any venue needs spectators and they wont hang to watch cars go high 5's or low 6's. Run low 5's or high 4's and they'll hang. When you figure the big bucks it takes to run "heads up" with KOTH or 10five, the costs are miles apart.   Ok kids, got a new post on our board that I think warrants some clarification on our part. First of all, I want everyone to understand that only a few of the rules are set in stone at this point. The transmission, no nitrous or any power adder, no sb vs. bb, no sheet metal intakes, and door slammers only are a done deal. The motor combos and car weights are an issue still to be resolved. That is the purpose of the two races this year and why it is so important that people show up with or without cars that are interested in seeing this program succeed. It is very possible we will modify the rules from the first race to the second, just so we can have more information. Without feedback from the track, it would be extremely difficult to make a competitive set of rules. So, if you want to be heard, show up and lets have a good time with this thing. Our plan is and always has been to run these races and during the off season, get the rules finalized and everyone will have plenty of time to make any changes to run a full season in 2003. I’d also like to state that this program is strictly non-profit. All monies received from sponsors, membership dues, cookie sales, etc. goes right back into the deal for promotional materials and purse money. We have no interest in making a dime off this thing. We just want to race. So, call us, email us, or send smoke signals. Let us know what you think or better yet, SHOW UP!

  Bracket racing is still a great affordable option for a lot of racers and it basically keeps the tracks open. If all a person has is a stock Mustang, then bracket racing is about all you can do. With our class, a used Super Gas car with a glide and a decently built rat motor can be competitive. If anyone thinks this class is expensive, go build a KOTH car and try to hang with those boys. I think any heads up deal is not immune to having money thrown at it, but I believe we've held out a lot of high dollar pieces and I can assure anyone reading this that if we see a way to revise the rules that 1) makes it more competitive or 2) helps keep it affordable, that's what will be done.

  The texas pro stock assn. has a great idea, kinda like the texas pro gas assn. had, just like everyone's ideas about class racing. Very few in general can afford to build a class, heads-up race car. If, in fact they do, it usually won't last long, a la texas pro gas assn. Now with all the griping and complaining about bb vs sb, etc., etc., it won't work for long either. Now the only racing everyone on this forum CAN do with what they currently own or will own in the future is BRACKET RACING. Yeah, it might not be as glamorous, but what the hell, you will be in competition, you will be racing down the track, and you don't have to have as deep of pockets as the next guy to win. If anything, I would like to see (1)larger bracket purses (2) dragsters/altereds vs dragsters/altereds and door cars vs door cars until final round or semis. Well, I've aired my thoughts on the subject. You all have a nice day.

Granted from a racers point of view this is a grest idea, but from a fans prospective this just won't fly. I and other race fans I know, go to see cars they can only dream about one day owning.   Just wanted to thank everyone who’s stopped by the TPSA message board and we appreciate all comments, good, bad, or indifferent. I did notice that after I posted about someone stepping up with the time and money to organize a small block class that it got very quiet. It’s still an option if anyone is interested. I also would like to encourage everyone to show up at Sealy on Saturday for the Texas Black Gold ShootOut. This is the first big money outlaw race in our neck of the woods and a big turnout helps all of us that enjoy racing around here. It’s really going to be a great show and what you may not realize, their will also be over 100 Autorama quality show cars there. That’s worth 15 bucks by itself. I’ll be there Friday night and Saturday if anyone wants to quiz me about Texas Pro Stock so look me up. So get a group together and come on out. You won’t be disappointed.

  You mentioned affordable racing. If you don't limit the size of the motors, you are opening the door to unaffordable racing to only a few. I would limit the motors in size and leave open the size of the tires. Stock front end suspension should also be considered.

  • Thanks for the post. Feel like we have more positive response than not. Would like to have Lone Star as our home track and as we get better established, take some road trips to some other tracks.   Hey guys, I think the rules are fair for anyone wanting to run a heads up class without all the rule skirting i see going on in the koth races.Stick to the rules, tech the cars at every race and it should be great! For all the small block guys out there get enough of your own kind together and these guys wont be able to say no to a small block class.

  Thanks for all the great response. Heard from a lot of people and looking forward to meeting all of you at the first race on Sept. 28th. Man, you small block guys are wearing me out. Here’s the deal. Number one. I have no objection to having a separate class for small blocks, but I cannot run big blocks and small blocks together. (Jeff, you know all the reasons why) Number two. To have a small block class we need two things. A set of rules and some sponsors to supplement the purse. Number three. That being said, I’d be happy to talk with anyone wanting to tackle that project and we’ll work with you. I’d also like to add that the purse money for these two races is being funded by entry fees and the rest is coming out of our pockets. We believe that this can be a great program and we’re not shy about sinking our own money into it. Not to mention the costs of the website and promotional materials. So, who wants to step up and invest their time and money to start up a small block class? Any takers?

  DAMN...any time you put up some rules, everybody bitches....hell give me enough weight out and you can run with anything,,,how bout just letting the smallblocks run a turbo or nitrous...hell,make the big blocks weigh 8000 lbs , just to make it fair for the small block owners whos cars wont turn the number.If you cant run within the rules, get another motor, or go run brackets.

  Ya'll are on the right track with rules. Maybe should say no "Back Halfs" Chassis cars only! LOL. If you can find a way to include the small blocks it will greatly improve your chances of good car counts. Texas Pro Gas got out of control from the start with rules allowing high dolar pieces. There are more old chassis cars around than one might think and they need a place to run. Reference Econo modified IHRA rules for some ideas on getting even combos with regard to cubic inches and weight - this is a cast intake class. Another big HINT - dont try and "headline" and event until you are sure you can put fans in stands by yourself - if you dont, tracks will cut you off. All would agree that this is a better filler in a KOTH or Pro Mod event than Test N Tune or a bracket race. My 3 cents.

  What are yall going to do about a small block combo? There is no way a cast manifold single 4 small block can hang w/ a 560 in rat. I dont care what heads are on the small block it wont do it. A 560 bbc should easily make 850 or better small block wont come close to that with a cast manifold and single 4. Either allow a BIG weight break or allow sheet metal intakes and 2 4's on the small blocks. Other wise it will just be the texas super gas off the stop association. Just my opinion. I got a 312 and a 406 ci buick headed small block just itchin to play.

  Sounds good to me. I just hope that it dosent turnout like the texasprogas class did where the big money and prostock truckmoters. I would like to see sheetmetal intakes and two carbs added dont think it would get to out of control as you keep the moter size and head desine down as well the class should be running around 5.60 to 6.00. Ihave talked to several peopl about the class and they are just as fired up as I amso lets go racing. ALL THROTELL and no BOTTEL
