I agree. I never really understood why the writers felt a need to use the drug addict metaphor. Willow had had a long history of abusing her powers for her own personal gain, from creating a spell so she and Xander would not be attracted in season 3 to initially looking to a spell to handle the Willow/Oz/Veruca triangle in season 4. The whole "there is always a price to pay for magic" paradigm was well established as well as Willows whole lack of self confidence theme. The only thing I can think of for a reason was that they were sending Willow to a dark place to do some not so nice things and if they didn’t use an addiction as a cause they were going to have a hard time bringing her back. I mean, if you’re an ass because that is just your nature, then where can you go but if you’re an ass because your really a nice person but you were just addicted to something, then all we need is the appropriate 12 step program and bingo – your back in good graces.
I really liked season 6 as the whole “What am I, why am I here, what is my purpose – oh screw it let’s just have some hot sex” theme was delicious. I actually started watching Buffy in reruns towards the end of season 5 (The Gift was the first episode that I watched from beginning to end) and the scene in Afterlife where Buffy confides in Spike that she was pulled out of heaven and was miserable was what convinced me that BtVS was no simple show about a hot chick kicking ass but was actually a quite daring examination of some of the basic issues of human existence. However, I thought the writers made some dubious plot decisions (Willow’s addiction, Spike attempting to rape Buffy and Spike getting a soul back) in the season that while I kind of understand, I still think they were basically mistakes.
