I have two daughters, ages 3 and 5. My neighbours have entered their four-year-old in pageants and say that she had a great time. My husband and I would like to enter our girls in full glitz pageants but have no idea how to get started. If you have any names of pageants we could enter, photographers or clothes/dress makers to purchase pageant outfits from please respond.
Any advice is welcome and appreciated!

Hey yall! I am 15 years old and I am just now gettin started in pageants. My first one is this Sunday. I am uncertain how to do my hair. I have thick hair that is shoulder length, it is manageable ( I wear it down every day ). My mom suggests I wear it down because my hair is firey red! I didn't know what to do. To describe my dress- strapless with beads across the chest area ( diamonds ) and then it is not form fitting, and touches the ground. * white * thank you for any help. Pictures or links to pageant hair do's will be much appreciated!

Girls your age tend to wear their hair down in a simple "barbie" (brushed over from a side part and either turned under on the ends or flipped out on the ends depending on which looks best on you and your hair). Older girls (16 or 17 and up) often wear their hair slicked back in a tight chignon on the nape of the neck but only do this if your face is fabulous and perfectly shaped. You might want to roll your hair briefly on large hot rollers, tease lightly all over and then brush out almost all of the teasing to give your hair some "body" or volume if it is very flat. Otherwise, I think you are on the right track! Just do not wear very dark or red lipstick (like you would in a theatre play) because it is very unflattering. Stick to a pretty pink or coral shade that looks good with your complexion. (Go to Walk slowly and elegantly with your very best posture. Maintain eye contact with the judges and smile, smile, smile! Look like you are having the time of your life and congratulate everyone else - win or lose! Good luck!

Try doing a banner "campaign",on california pageant boards and on the bravo board. Get some good quality banners, maybe 3 different ones and advertise on the boards. Start a website and offer guestbook drawings for fees off, do photo contests for fees off and this will get people entering. After they have enbtered the contest they will probably come anyway. Make the pageant attractive to people all over the country for maximum contestant numbers and remember, make it fair with no COI and give good prizes. People will learn that yous is a good pageant by word of mouth after a while and they will try it and if it ood, they will come back and bring friends with them. Giood luck I hope I heled some!! Hi, I too am a new pageant director from Northern Maine. This is a remote area with little opportunity for girls to compete without traveling at least three hours. I had to cancel my first pageant in February and now have only four entries thus far for May. I have done advertising by making posters that hold brochures and posting at the malls, grocery stores and any other place that has a public bulletin board. I have created a website (www.geocities.com/pinetreepageantry) and have done banner campaigns on New England message boards. Also, since my granddaughter and neice are both very involved in pageants (and we are tired of traveling, LOL) I have created a pageant email list from other pageants who send mass emails to advertise and email possible contestants about once a month or when deadlines are approaching. I always make sure to include something that allows them to be removed from the list, but have been lucky and had only 1 out of approximately 100 who asked to be removed. Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Hi,

I found your site, and it is wonderful! I just have a question.... you gave wonderful instructions on how to do "pageant hair", unfortunately, I didn't understand them much, LOL! So, I'm going to my hairdresser and asking for help in that aspect. Also, do you have any info on how to fix my daughter's hair if she has a hair piece? We just got one, and we're not sure on how to do it. Also, I was hoping for more specific make up information, like how to apply eyeshadow and eyeliner to make that "smoky" outside corner of the eye thing....

I know I'm clueless, but any help you would be able to give me (even if it's directing me to another site) would be wonderful!

Here are a few suggestions... as for the "fall", you roll it and style it the night before - just like you would if it were on her head. I do believe you need to wash it first so that it will take curl but check with the person that you bought it from before you do that just in case. You can roll her real hair lightly to give fullness to her hairdo and to make sure that it doesn't stick out underneath the fall. Roll the front just like you usually would for a pouf. Make a small sprout-like ponytail right behind the pouf - this provides an anchor for the comb of the fall to stick into so it won't fall off. Put on the fall, comb out and style the pouf blending some of her real hair over the fall so that you can't see where the real hair ends and the fall begins. As to doing a pouf, makeup, etc.... I still say the best way to learn is to pay someone one time and watch everything that they do. Many good H/M people go to prelims or other smaller pageants where they don't charge so much. You can get a good look at the products that they use as well as the way they do the makeup and hair. Then take a few closeup pictures of the completed "look". You can practice on your own at home. There used to be a board where you could ask questions to a H/M artist and I learned a whole lot there including makeup brands, colors, etc. I am pretty sure it no longer exists, though.... too bad - it was so helpful!

Hi! I have a couple of questions. I am going to be participating in a local pageant in February of 2004. The girls who normally participate in this pageant always have what I call a 'made up' look - which is what I need for on stage. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions for good foundations (long-lasting), and other products that will be great for stage makeup. Thanks so much. We are new to the pageant world and need lots of help. I downloaded the handbook and plan to highlight well within the margins tonight! :o) We are entered into our first competion Sunshine Productions--does anyone have information on this competition? I have emailed with the director several times - she is VERY attentive and helpful, but I am looking to talk to mothers that have entered this competition before. Should I be leary that since there was no competition in my area, I pd. my state fee and was named as my state delegate and now we are going to Nationals in Sept.? This will be our first competition and now I am afraid that I have gotten my daugther and myself in over our heads. It is a natural competition--no sequins, no rhinstones, no make-up for our group.....I bought two dresses for her (almost like Easter dresses - one is white and ankle length and the other peach and knee length) - she has blond hair and blue eyes. What do you recommend I go with? - and it does not have to be the ones that I bought...

Also - she is a ham to the family, but I am afraid that she will have stage fright on the day of - I am allowed to go on stage with her, any recommendations for that day and in preparation of the pageant? She will be 2 on June 19..

We are also entering swim wear and casual wear...any rule of thumbs for entering this categories?

Thank you for all your help! :o)

For her coloring, I would go with "bright pastels" like hot pink or bright peach or turquoise. Try to find a pageant dress shop or a bridal salon with glitz dresses, or check out eBay or online pageant consignment to find a gown. Easter dresses will not work. I hate to tell you, but you jumped headfirst into one of the highest glitz pageants in the USA, for a newbie. Also, what state are you in that you were given the state title for the fee, and asked to go to Nationals?

So it seems that the purchase of a glitz dress is unavoidable. I believe that Sunburst is the organization that will be holding the competition at our state fair in MO in August - would it be considered glitz at that level too?

What sort of prices am I looking at for a glitz dress?

My view is, the sooner you invest in one, the sooner you start getting the great dress scores. You can find them second hand for $200 and up, new and custom for $500 and up. Shop around, and ask pageant moms you meet where thay get theirs.

Not with our experience! I did Sunburst a decade ago and
won with mild glitz at state level. My daughter and son just did it this past weekend along with my cousin's
child. My kids were glitz dressed. The winners in all 3 age groups we competed in were in at best sunday dress. The one that won my daughter's group was in a plaid and velvet dress that I see kids wearing to school! We're STILL confused as to HOW the judges were judging. The kids won the extras but none placed higher than 2nd.

Most moms don't like hats because they mess up the hair. I think they can be cute if they are used the right way. Make sure you are ready to go against the grain in your first pageants. I'm not trying to discourage you from the hat, but the judges will either love the originality or hate the non-conformity.

So even if the Sunburst director is telling me that most of the girls wear party dresses or Sunday dresses to the state fair pageant, you would still put her in glitz and makeup?

I loved some of the dresses listed on the Pageant Shoppe and of course the one that I liked the most I was told has been in the circuit for about 5 years and always a winner in white, but it is full of sequins and beading (pearls)...I heard this is out of style and we could be penalized for the dress...is this true?

However, pearls are outdated now. It may be a good starter dress, but if you have been told you could be penalized for the decor, you very well could be. Try to find out from the salesperson or a professional pageant wear designer if there is a way to change the decorations or something. Sometimes those things can come off easily and be replaced.

I paid my granddaughter's entry fee to the same pageant system. I asked specific questions before entering her, like the policy on make up (I won't put make up on a 3-year old)and clothing. I was told that small children are not allowed to wear make up (yeah!)and no pageant dresses (no flashy ones with stones). The Director seemed very helpful and answered my emails promptly.

If you will be entering any Sunburst pageants, they are high glitz. My granddaughter won at the local level, was runner up at the state level and attended the Nationals last year. Lots of makeup on the little ones and very glitzy clothing at Nationals. The only exception was the day care wear. Also, a lot of the children were wearing hairpieces. The state and local competitions are a little less glitzy.

I have never done this system before but let me give you some sound advise on any system, especially if you are new to pageants. Call the director and ask if you can buy either last years national pageant tape or a state tape. It wont be free but it is a wise investment because it will give you an idea of the level of competition and the attire you should expect would work best. Better to spend the extra 10.00-60.00 then to get there and have any suprises.

Also, take a look at the pictures on the web site (if there are any) and see what girls were wearing last year.

I wanted to give you all an update. We competed in our first natural pageant the weekend of July 17....there were 11 girls competing in the 19-35 month age group....and we took 3rd! We are so excited...needless to say it was not Queen (and that is ok) but we now have the BUG!!!! If anyone can recommend some pageant systems (as close to MO as possible) - prefer natural but at this point would also consider some exposure to light/med. glitz....no where ready for the highrollers yet! LOL

My concern is this...take for example photogenic...the girl who won (same as the one that took queen) had an enhanced/retouched photo - make up and all...so I agree with the other mom...why can exceptions be made for some and not others...my luck - we would have done it and would have been DQ. So do we take our chances with doing this at nationals?

Congratulations! I have a 4yr old and we have done high-gliz and natural pageants. Have you heard of Our Little Miss?It is a wonderful pageant system. They give scholarships and are more family oriented. They were very little makeup on the little ones and they don't like the hair falls unless their not noticeable. The pics are not enhanced.Oh,the dresses. They can be gliz or no gliz.I've seen winners wear either.I've seen a sunday dress win over a national dress. But you can't have a opening in the back of the dress below the shoulder blades. If so,it has to be covered up with a piece of material. They like the children to look like children. Here's my advice.Try to do as many of the small pageants as you can.The more experience she has on-stage the better. I AM MAKING THE DRESS THAT IS AQUA/BLUE WITH SILVER GLITZ, BUT WAS THINKING ABOUT PUTTING SOME AQUA/BLUE TASSLE BEADS AROUND THE CUFF OF THE WHITE SOCKS. DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA OR SHOULD THEY JUST BE WHITE. THE ONES I HAVE NOW ALREADY HAVE A LACY/RIBBON RUFFLE, BUT IT'S NOT VERY FANCY OR BIG. I'M A NEWBIE AT THIS. PLEASE ADVISE IF YOU CAN. THANKS. S.

Honestly I have never heard of plucking a little child's eyebrows. Maybe moms do it and don't talk about it? I've never heard of it before.
Most kids don't really have hairy brows anyway...maybe it only LOOKS like they've been plucked?
I wouldn't do it if I were you. I know you want her to have better chances, but it just sounds...painful. I mean it hurts for us adults tweezing our eyebrows, I can't imagine a child, especially a toddler, having their eyebrows done. Ouch, that would hurt.
So, I would not do it if I were you. Even if the other moms are. But honestly, I have NEVER heard of any child in pageants having their eyebrows plucked.

Please do not pluck your little girl's eyebrows.

When I was seven, my coach set me up with this really mean h/m artist. She plucked my eyebrows and I had no idea what she was doing, but it hurt and I screamed! She snapped at me to hold still.

I wouldn't let anyone come near me with tweesers until about a year ago. I'm eighteen now and I still get a little shaky when I need to have a hair or two pulled out. (I prefer wax.)

My daughter is 15 months and actively participates in local pageants. Nothing major yet! We have such a fun time but there are several mothers at a local pageant that we do that ALWAYS have something smart to say. (after reading this handbook I guess it doesn't happen to only me.lol)The last paeant that we done ther my daughter placed 1st runner-up, prettiest smile,runner-up most photogenic. I was very pleased because we had a good time. When the pageant was over and we were getting ready to leave another pageant mom approaches me and says "You have a pretty little girl and she would have won if you wouldn't have put gloves on her!" Boy was I one-hot-mom. At the time I thought she was being rude but on the way home I got to thinking about it and I have never seen any other kids at that pageant wear Gloves either. So my question is when is it ok to where gloves? The gloves matched perfect with the dress. I have also heard this about hats. Note these are local pageant but some of the girls here do where state and national level dresses.
Oh yeah I have to brag- Oct.4 my daughter brought home her first Queen title at The Sunburst pageant along with prettiest eyes in the same dress but we didn't use the gloves!!! Did this have something to do with it?
Thank you- Justice's Pageant Mom- Virginia

I have never seen gloves in beauty - only sportswear or westernwear. Possibly the judges would have deducted for them so, unfortunately, the mom with the comments may have been right.

I really haven't seen gloves on anyone either, except for talent or costume event. I wouldn't use the gloves. Also, I know that mom sounded really rude, but on the other hand...you know this pageant handbook? Where would we be if people didn't tell us these things? She was probably just trying to help, after all you said she told "your daughter would have won..." so obviously she thinks very highly of your daughter, she was just probably trying to give you a tip so that next time your daughter would win! That's what I think anyway. To be honest, even though it does sound offensive, I would rather somebody tell me these things than just keep wondering why I lost. But, yeah, no gloves, and good luck to you and your little girl!! :-)

First I'd like to say your site is amazing!! Very informative. My daughter is 2 yrs old (29 months) and my husband and I would love for her to enter the wonderful world of pageants. The only problem is we are stationed overseas in Germany. I've seen the websites that allow you to compete over the internet, but I don't know how trustworthy they are or how to begin. We aren't scheduled to return to the USA until 2007 and I would like to get started way before then. Any advise you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Nicole

I know about lots of mail-in pageants, but I don't know what the websites are. You will have to search for them on the web to find them. But I will give you a list of websites of mail-in pageants to look for.
Many are only for America people but technically you ARE an American so it should be fine. Also, many of them offer international mail-in contest so if you can't enter for the US title, you can atleast enter as an international contestant.

AMERICA'S PAMPERED PRINCE AND PRINCESS...This is a photo contest only and it is just for babies and very young children like toddlers. I think it held once a month. I have never entered and I don't know anyone who has, so I can't really give you an opinion on it. However it seems okay, I mean it has been running for about eight years and it looks pretty big, so it's probably okay.

MISS AMERICAN ROSE/MISS WORLD ROSE... (if they won't let you enter Miss American Rose because you're overseas, they also have Miss World Rose so you can enter that instead). This website should be pretty easy to find because it is an established, well known mail-in pageant with lots of entries. I have not done this one but my friend did and her prizes were nice, and as I said this pageant has tons of entries, it is a very popular mail-in pageant. I am going to enter this next year because my friend liked it so much.

MISS ROYAL BEAUTY AND MISS ROYAL STAR...Royal Beauty is basically judged on your child's photo only and Royal Star is more of an interview type of thing. They are two seperate contests but are run by the same director. I haven't done this one but I plan to maybe next year or so. I think it looks nice. Oh, and they also run several contests throughout the year with "themes", like valentines day or halloween pictures, etc. I think this pageant is newer so it is not as established however it looks pretty nice I think.

AMERICAN ROYALTY I.Q. PAGEANT...I'm not sure if you would be allowed to enter this or not because you're overseas, however if you explain to her that you are an American stationed overseas, maybe she'd let you enter because technically you are still a US citizen so I think it should be fine.
This one is different from other mail-in pageants because you don't really "compete" in anyhting, what you will be doing is earning points and the girl with the most points is the national queen. Here's what you do: you pay a fee, they mail you a state crown and sash, then you have to go out and do appearances wearing your crown and sash. It can be anything- parades, volunteer work, meeting important people, etc. You earn points by doing appearances and you can also get extra points by having your own website, getting you picture in the news, etc. If you get the most points, you will be the national queen and get a bigger crown and sash and prizes.
I have done this pageant and even though I didn't win nationals, one of my friends won nationals and she deserved it. I did the pageant in like 2000 or 2001 so it may have changed since then but my crown and sash were really nicely made like ones you'd get at a state pageant.

AMERICA'S IDEAL MISS...this is a live pageant but they also offer mail-in pageant too. You could probably enter the mail-in pageant they offer. Now this pageant, I don't know anything about. All I know is you pay a fee and they give you your crown and sash, but I have no idea what you have to do to compete in it. You would probably atleast need a photo or something. I really don't know anything about it. I think the point of it is that if you don't live where they have a live pageant, you can enter the mail-in, and that qualifies you to attend their national pageant live. So obviously you would not be able to go to their live national pageant, but you could still enter their mail-in pageant anyway if you wanted to.

PAGEANT GALS...They offer many mail-in pageants, and I'm pretty sure babies and toddlers can enter too. I have not enterred their pageants so I don't know how great they are however they have pictures of the winners on their website and the crowns and sahses look very nice.

MISS AMERICAN CORONET...I am listing this one although I think it is just for teens and adults, so don't get your hopes up. You can check it out yourself and see what you think about it. I know it is a good one though because several girls I know how enterred and won, so no worries there. But I think your daughter might be too young to enter. Not sure of the age limits.

I'm sure I know of others....I remember one that has pink sashes but I can't remember the name of it...something with hearts...heart of america maybe? I can't remember at the moment...I will post later if I remember more. Good luck looking for pageants! Post again if you have more questions or you can email me at:

Hello there! My daughter won her age division in her very first pageant...a Cover Miss prelim. I immediately joined a yahoo group, and they have been immensely helpful. Someone also posted the link to this page, and it has been invaluable! Anyhow, she is 2 1/2, and we are doing some glitz pageants now. Here is my list of questions. If anyone has anything helpful to offer, please feel free to drop me an e-mail!

#1. Mommy hair and makeup...I recently got my daughter hh piggies and a maxi wiglet. I will be getting her a fall before her first big pageant. What tips can you all offer in styling the hairpieces? I know how to roll the hair, but I can't seem to get the curls to lay right.
Also, any tips on how to get her to sit still for makeup application?

#2. We have a Fabulous Faces prelim next Saturday, and a photo shoot immediately prior. Should I leave the makeup and hair like it was for the shoot for her to compete in? Or should I do something different?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Nearly every word in both post was spelled incorrectly.Although it was supposed to be a helpful post, both posters started going back and forth telling one another what they had spelled wrong. I thought it was posted as a joke. Funniest thing I have read in quite some time! If you are going to be helpful~ leave the spelling grades to the English teachers.

Hello! I was really glad to stumble across this page! My daughter is 18mos and is about to compete in her 5th pageant. We have only done local level. I wouldn't dream of going up any further, I don't have the time, energy, money, or will to...haha...Anyway.. Here is my question....

**1**Does anyone have any tips for competing at the local level? We are in a small town. Of course there is always that underlying unspoken thought that these pageants are political and it's about who knows who blah blah blah.
There are only 4 girls in her division. We had 5 in Christmas pageant and took first alternate. We have not yet won a crown out of 5 pageants, we always get 1st runner up.

**2** What do the judges look for? I've heard personality and keep them happy on stage even if she doesn't hit all the marks.

**3**Does the dress have a lot to do with it at this level? Before we have competed in $40 generic "tulle" and "sequin" dresses or OTR Dillards dress. I have seen full glitz "national" dresses even at this local level, so this time I bought a beautiful med-high glitz "national" level dress and it looks good on her. She has fair skin, blue eyes, blond hair.

**4**What are some tricks for keeping them happy on stage?

**5**Is it okay to let them carry a small unnoticable toy with them on stage or even a few pieces of cereal or something to eat?

**6**Does the number they go in have anything to do with how they are scored? We always seem to draw the dreaded number one and the director herself told me that they score #1 the lowest...could that be why we are not winning?

***If anyone has any tips on competing at the local level, please throw them at me! Our pageant is a week from Sat. I would love to hear your advice!! Thanks!!***

It took us 5 pageants before my granddaughter won a title. After each pageant we would ask the director for her scores and find out where she was lacking. It was fustrating at times but the number one reason was her dress it was an "older style" with beads and appliques. We did not have a lot of money so we had someone make the shell of the dress and we have been designing with stones (crytal onyl) since then. We just order more and then apply and when we get more money we get more stones. The first time she wore the dress she won and it won best dress at the last pageant. So my advice is get her a good dress and go from there. Good luck

Hi I am so glad to find this board!! I am a grandmother with a 19 mth old GD and me and her Mom love placing her in pageants! So far we have only placed her in locals and she has either won queen or placed in all that she has been in and also in every one she has walked away with prettiest eyes and prettiest eyes and she has also won photogenic in all the pageants she has been in and then 3 non pageant related events. Do i sound like i am bragging you bet'ya!! lol No seriously i could never be a judge cause to me they are all beautiful!
We are now wanting to spread our wings and go for the next level State and National. I plan on designing and making her dress(something i used to do years ago) but styles and techniques have changed so much that i am lost!! My question is where can i go to find information like are the stones glued or tacked on? Where is the best place to purchase the stones and what is the techniques using the apple barrel paints?
Anyway some of you may already know the answers and if not maybe you can tell me where to find the answers. Thank you so much for all the info i have learned on here and it is so refreshing to finally see a board without all the bashing and hateful stuff!

This handbook is great! I wish I would have read it before we went to Nationals this summer!

My 3 1/2yr old entered her first pageant at the State level and won, our family is very low-income but we managed to get enough sponsors to send her to nationals with high hopes, we even put in our rent money to get her there, we felt she had a very good chance of winning, it was a "natural" pageant.

When we got to the hotel and lined up for registration and I saw how the other girls and moms were dressed just to register I about died, I knew right then we were way out of our league.

I had a fairly nice glitz dress I bought used and really added to it with more rhinestones, we got all her pro-am stuff at Wal-Mart. She did really well in the Pro-Am, and won best dress overall at nationals with her secondhand dress I had added on to, BUT we were still way way way out of our league!

I had no idea you had to have a portfolio to have any chance of making top ten, because the rules say it is not "required". After talking to other moms at the pageant, I learned that the rules might say it is not required, but no one has ever advanced without one.... we had no professional photos at all and I didn't even have a professional headshot for the program. Now I know better, but it was a costly way to learn!

At one point during the competition I was in tears and near complete meltdown because we were so unprepared, I was just thinking it would be different than it really was. Many of the toddlers did have really big hair and makeup and custom dresses, which I was not expecting and could have preapred for had I known. Talking to their moms I discovered some of them spent like $700 and up on their dresses, we had spent about $150 on ours. I was also very underdressed, because even the other pageant moms who went onstage with their toddlers were very well dressed, I was dressed typical rural midwest WalMart. (I don't think I have even owned an item of clothing that didn't come from Walmart in years).

Looking back it was a good experience overall but at the time I was so stressed out about the fact we were spending thousands of dollars we didn't have because we thought she actully had a chance... and dealing with the emotional pain of realizing she didn't stand a chance....so I didn't enjoy the moment when I should have because of feeling so far outclassed, outspent, outexperienced and outprepared.

I wish looking back that I had known just a little bit more and we would have arrived a little more prepared emotionally, as well as clothes-wise and would have just enjoyed the whole process and event that much more!

I had more than one really really hurtful comment from other pageant moms who were more Southern Glitz oriented that kind of made me feel like the dumb country hick in the big city, or at least feeling like that was how they viewed us. I also met some really really wonderufl, nice helpful pageant moms who gave me great advice about how to improve in the future. So if you are a newbie, just smile and be friendly to everyone, and if one mom is mean to you, shake it off and smile at the next mom, she just might be more friendly! Don't be afraid to let other moms know this is your first National, some of them will really help you out with suggestions and where you are supposed to be/go etc...

I decided after that experience to compete at the State level for a few years until she is older and has more experience, and we can gradually afford to invest more in pageants if she continues to love it.

The good news is that the Nationals we went to had enough extra-curricular activities that we both loved that made the whole event fun even with the realization we were out of our league.

My advice for new pageant moms:

If you are going to Nationals as a "newbie", fresh from winning your first State pageant, only do so considering it a "vacation" with a pageant as one focus rather than the pageant "being" the whole trip, that way if you don't win you will still have a great memory and experience and the money you spent won't seem so bad or stressful.

If you are on a budget or struglling financially, don't even try Nationals, it will be way to stressful on you, stick with the State pageants for a while where you can compete, have fun, spend a lot less, win a crown, make friends and feel like you are on a fair competition level, then you can always go to a National later on. Some pageants REQUIRE you to go on to the next level or you forfeit the crown, though so check ahead of time.

Check out consignment and auctions for good dresses that you can add on to or adjust if needed, we did very well with ours, and spent less than $150 on her National dress that way.

Pageants are supposed to be fun fun fun, so if you get in over your head it will take away from the fun (as I learned). Go slowly and make sure that you are totally prepared for Nationals when you go so that you can have a great time, and win or lose, know that you did so fairly and were competing with the same level of clothing, photos, experience and H/M and had a fair chance. It just makes it so much more enjoyable! We are now happily looking forward to State competitions and my daughter is LOVING pageants.

Usually, at that age legs dont need shaving but you could try a gentle hair removal cream because you do NOT want fuzz under the stage lights LOL I know it sounds extreme but almost everyone does it, it is not unusual. Yes, pluck her eyebrows and fill in with matching eyebrow pencil (h/m artists will do that). But if she is very fair with "see-thru" eyebrows don't pluck or she will look bald-foreheaded. Darker haired girls usually have thicker eyebrows so if she is dark then pluck. Use facial hair removal cream if it is too painful, or one of those mini razors for eyebrows. Use a great h/m artist if you can;t do her all that well yourself and if she hasn;t had coaching you might wanna invest in a couple of lessons, but hse sounds like she pretty much knows what shes doing. Remeber, great clothes are A MUST so get her some nat'l level, custom designed things if you don;t already have some. www.thelookpc.com/consignments is a great site for barely used national level clothes if you don;t want to wait for and pay for brand new national clohtes. For that Joan and Joyce, Angie Payne, KRO are all great

Anyone may email me if they like with comments etc. I love the site and this board first and foremost!!! Great that someone out there tells it like it is.
I would also like the "sewing" link :-)

Now for my questions... First on photos - we are in the South and the "glitz" photos always win yet we cannot afford glitz photos. I have one excellent headshot that might be retouchable but I would need to ask the person doing the retouching if that would be possible. Has this ever been done - using a studio headshot that has been retouched and recieving good scores - or are we destined to have terrible scores unless we get the pro shots at 500 or more per session?

Second - and this is a hair question. My hubby is not liking the pageants so we need to do something as glamorous as possible without using anything fake. My daughter is 2 and her hair is very wavy/curly and the shortest part is 2 to 3 inches and the longest is 4 to 5 inches long. It frizzes badly (gets all knotted because of the curls/waves). It is also somehwat thin. What type of hairdo should I do for her?

Third - this is a makeup ?? What salons out there will let you bring in a baby and show you how to do makeup for that child? I do not hardly ever wear makeup (last time was when I got married almost 4 years ago and occasionally a little blush/eyeshadow/mascara) and I would really like to have the best colors for her and learn this myself since we will probably only be doing local/state level pageants.

And lastly - her dress. I have a dress I "like" but not love. I am getting another shell made and I love the colors and it will be made "for" my daughter. I am using a seamstress who looked over a pageant dress and says she can do it but she has only ever made wedding and wedding party dresses. She has been sewing for a very long time and I totally trust her. We are not talking much that I will be out if it goes wrong but do you think that a woman with over 40 years of seamstress experience could make a pageant dress shell and do a good enough job on it? I have seen her "regular" clothes she has made and they are awesome!!!!!

Okay I know this is long enough and want to thank all in advance.

First of all, I'd like to say that this is really a wonderful handbook! My daughter is 4 years old and we just started her in some local pageants, and some of your tips have been very helpful! She has done 11 local pageants so far and has placed fairly well in all of them. Even if she didn't win queen every time, her modeling and personality were very good onstage. For that reason I've been thinking about taking her to compete on the state and national level. It won't happen right away, we need to prepare more and purchase some national outfits, but I came to this site seeking advice for when we do decide to move up a level. There are many things I've been wondering about some of these national pageants, and I'd appreciate any help that you would like to offer.

First of all, we've never attended a national pageant to watch but I've seen videos and pictures of some of the girls who participate. They have these huge hairstyles loaded with cans of hairspray and extensions. My daughter wears her hair about the same way for some of these locals, but she only wears one hairstyle for the entire pageant. When I see these photos and videos I notice that some of the girls have different hairstyles for every competiton, beauty, sportswear, and westernwear etc. I've looked at national pageant schedules and in some of these, the entire competition for a certain age group takes place within a 5 hour period. So my question is, how in the world do these girls have time to get their hair and make-up done and compete, then take out the hairstyle which has been basically glued to their heads, and change it over and over again for every competition and still make it look good all within a 5 hour period? It must be messed up after they pull out all of those extensions since there is so much hairspray and glue, so how do they get it out and get it to look good again all within a short period of time? I'm sorry if I seem clueless, I've just been wondering the trick to all of this.

Also, my mother is able to make my daughter’s westernwear and sportswear, but we choose to have the dresses professionally made. I’ve just been wondering where people get the hats and the boots for the westernwear? Does someone make them or do they buy and customize them? I’m not sure we’re able to actually make a pair of boots lol, so I’d like to know where they get these items.

Ok, I won’t make this any longer lol. I’d appreciate any help from anyone who would like to offer it. The sooner these questions are answered then the sooner my daughter will be able to move up a level and she really can’t wait! Thank you all very much!

Believe it or not, a professional H/M can do multiple hair style changes on many girls and still have them out on time! They do not take out extensions between changes, though. If a child uses extensions and wants two ponytails, then the extensions are put on in a way that would allow the back of the hair to be parted. (extensions on each side of the part) Also, many of the girls wear falls for beauty, and hats for sw and westernwear so that covers up a lot. The fact that the H/M can do multiple style changes quickly and they still look great is, unfortunately, why H/M are so popular and expensive. Try paying a good one at a national and then watching very carefully and practice later at home. As to boots and hats, they are purchased "normally" and then covered with superstretch to match the outfit. It is really not too hard to do - you just cut large pieces, glue on and cover seams with stones and decorations.

Thank you so much for your help! Now my problem with the westernwear has been solved, we know we can make her outfits now without having to worry about where to get fancy boots and a hat. Do you have any idea where I could purchase a regular pair of boots and a hat for my daughter? Right now that's my problem with understanding some of these details. I understand exactly what it is that I need, I just don't quite know how to get it yet lol.

Your information about the hairstyles was very helpful. We'll probably end up hiring someone for most of her national pageants, but I just needed to know how it was done so that I can get what she needs for her hair. So if
I'm correct, I bring the extensions to the pageant and give them to the H/M artist who will style her hair? Can any of the extensions be reused for another pageant(since they can get expensive)? Do you have any idea of a good site/store that I'd be able to buy the appropriate falls/extensions for pageants? Also, during your post you noted that the hats and falls can cover some of the areas that got "messed-up" from taking previous styles out. So if my daughter competed in sportswear first and wore her hair up, then after that competition we'd just take her hair down and cover it with a fall to cover the messed-up areas so she can compete in beauty? Approximately how much time will we have between competitions to make these switches?

As you can see, we've got a long way to go! But like I said, I won't be taking her to that level for awhile and I need all the time I can get to prepare her(and me!). I appreciate your help with these questions, and anything else you have to offer would be great!

I got my daughter's hat and boots from a westernwear store - just make sure she can model in them. As to extensions... there are places that sell falls (Farrah's, Sydneys, etc.) that I see on the voy boards. They may sell extensions, too. We bought my daughter's extensions (the one time that she wore them) at an asian store that sells lots of human hair. There is one of these in practically every town. Go on on one of the bigger boards and ask where people get them. You need to make sure and wash it first or it won't hold curl. Then many use the hair glue that you buy there to glue one strip to another to make it double thick. You part your child's hair across the back. You then use the extension glue to glue them onto your child's scalp making rows down the back that are a few inches apart. You will remove the extensions after the pageant by soaking them with the extension glue remover stuff or just saturate her hair in conditioner and let her lay in a tub of water or even just let her go swimming. You must have the extensions in before you go to the H/M though. I have even seen kids with them in the night before because of early H/M times. You can wash them and use them again. Like I said, my daughter only used them once - she has really thick hair and didn't need them so I am not an expert on them. I do know that it seems like everyone is using falls these days. You take it rolled to the H/M the night before. As to hairstyle changes, beauty is always the first event because the hair gets messed up after that. It is usually beauty, swimwear and then proam events.

Last year when we did our first big national pageant, we hired a big name hair and make up person. He did about 20 girls in one weekend, we all had schedules on when to be there, he changed their hair and touched up their make up for each event. These people that you can hire are pros and they can do a hair style in seconds.

It also took all the stress off me, after the first time I hired a h/m person, I refused to ever do a pageant again where they did not have them available. They do cost but they are well worth it.

My advice would be to use a hair fall. My daughter has long, thick blond hair that's beautiful but a handful to roll and fix.We used a H/M pro that did a wonderful job on her that everyone thought she had a fall. She did my dd h/m 3 dif times and it looked great. But a hair fall would be so much easier and faster and better for the hair. All you would have to do is fix it before the pageant(your local salon)or you can have them fix it and put it in.If you can use the fall watch the person doing it and later you can do it yourself and just hire someone to do her makeup. But,if your like me, having someone else do it puts the pressure of you and your able to enjoy it more.

My son just did his thing to the music at his first High Glitz National and was beaten rightly by a friend that had an awesome Pro Am so for the next National which was 3 weeks later he learned a Pro Am routine and ended up with above perfict scores! in Sportswear. I think it helped he has taken Ballet and Tap that he learned it quickly. I also would try to think of something other than a Zoot suit everybody does them so if you do something diffrent like we did I think it ups you scores due tot the originality :-) Great Luck to him we hope to go to UMMI next year so hopefully we will see you there:-)

Hi - I have a 5 month old daughter and we are just getting into pageants. She has only done one live pageant (2 mail-ins); a Sunburst prelim (at a mall) and won 1st runner up and we plan to enter the State competition, but thats not until May - so I'll worry about that later - anyway, I would like for her to do more pageants in the meantime. Has anyone heard of Diamond USA? They are having a pageant (also at a local mall)in October and just wanted to know what kind of dress I should buy. At the Sunburst Prelim she wore a halo type headpiece - do judges think this is too "flower girly"? Should I stick with a standard headband with a bow (she has no hair)? Also she wore a baby pink dress, more like a fancy church dress (no crinolin or anything) should I invest in a "pageant dress" that she will only be able to wear for a few months? Also her eyes are blue, should I buy a turquoise dress? (the light pink seemed to wash her out a little) What do judges look for (in prelims) in a 5 month old? Thanks for any advice!

Hi my son (yeah son) just did a Diamond USA prelim in Fl and the girls had on everything from jean dreses to Med Glitz Dresses. At the prelims for Diamond you get a very divers cross section. The judges did not judge at ours the best dressed as they did Beauty it was during line up afterwards. This system scores very high in personality. My son knew the T formation but several of the other kids did not in fact they really did not ask the kids to "model" till after my son went which would have been the 6yr old girls that followed him. The baby grand wore a lilac "church" "flowergirl dress" chiffon over satin skirt and satin bodice and had the strechy hairband bow thinggy (see good thing I have a boy LOL)
Good luck to you and HAVE FUN!!

I also wanted to ask about entering the costume category: does this mean that a costume is like something you would wear at halloween (cute bunny rabbit or puppy) or is this something from a dance competions (sequins - beads)?

Thanks.

Use a definite theme that is recognizable, but use your imagination, because everything you think of right off has already been used before. Also, try to use small props.

What is your childs favorite story book character if she likes being her is gonna show in the personality and these types of costumes you can usually find this time of year very easily. Best bet pick a few you like show your daughter the pictures on the package and let her pick one for this year and one for next year so you don't have to wait for Halloween to come around to get good selection again :-)The favs I have seen were little red riding hood and Thumbalina

Hi!,the pageant handbook Is the best website EVER!!!
Ok. Now i need some serious help!

~*~THE STORY~*~
I did local school pageants when i was a child 5-9yrs old
Now i'm 13 and last year i just started finding out what really pageants are! WOW they are GREAT compared to those school popularity contests!
I love the glitz and the glamour and the pro-am ITS SO GREAT
i have the pageant fever running thru me as i type this post!
But i had tuff time! see i went to a All american miss easter pageant last year ,and its high southern glitz i mean woah! I showed up with my pearls & sequined dress, salon styled hair, white as a ghost body, and to top it off i had cheap loreal mascara running down my face GUESS WHAT I WON!? 6th alternate WOW i got a plaque..
But i deserved it after i saw what them girls look liked and there routines were the coolist!
But this earlier year i bought a glitzy dress, swimwear, sportswear, western wear,AND i was so excited before they arrived and THEN when they got here THE dress did not fit,the sportswear had all the stones torn off of it,the western wear was all glued and the fringe was hanging off ,Swimwear was too short,IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!
and then after i recieved that junk my mom didnot have any money to do photogenic or h/m or anything!,
so we went to walmart and had those beyond cheap photo's made and its was so awful i cried and cried
WELL this time at the pageant i won Guess what 5th alt.and a plaque THE same exact plaque i won the last pageant!

~*~WELL thats over and its been 9 months,
I have learned alot and theres still more i want to learn..
Recently i bought a glitzy national dress from nikole & Kendalls ,,its awesome! it fits and its so beautiful Its neon pink and perfect for my platinum blond hair!
and i bought sportswear national level ,and its great
I have my wardrobe,falls & hair,eyelashes,h/m artist,photo's
and everything AND i'm getting ready to do a barbie pageant in febuary!!! SO EXCITED

~*~I NEED HELP!

Ok. But anyways i need help!
i went to target last weekend to buy some curlers
and i have heard hotsticks were good but they did not have them? are these really good for doing the barbie flip?
AND also how do i make that flower curl up by my pouf?
Does anyone have a pageant checklist i can borrow!?
email me at lifesizebarbie49@aol.com and give it to me AND give me more advice..
I'm tall 5'9" and it seems like the shorter girls win over me? hmm please give me advice on this..
Jazz shoes for sportswear CANVAS OR LEATHER???
Photo slips from wal-mart? good or dont?
is Ben Nye stage makeup good or dont?
if your happy 24/7 at the pageant and hotel Does it make you win more? because i personally think it does something
and i'm really shy so i dont think i can smile and talk to everyone (lol)your probally thinking why do pageants if your shy WELL i'm not on stage! =)
Casual wear Are there too many go go girls or is that just me because i have a gogo outfit for cw.
Black sportswear? i have it please tell me there is not that many and i'm not going to get hit by the black sea??!

thanks! please post comments and helpful tips THANK YOU!!,amber

My daughter is 3, did pageants from 12mo to 2 and then I pulled her out because of a bad experience. Now she has asked to do pageants and I have decided to "try again". My dauther is very pretty, outgoing, so I figured we would do ok if we started out at some pre-lims and worked on getting her wardrobe together for the time being. So we decide to do a "Swimwear/beachwear" prelim close to our home, (in the south) I contacted the director ask the appropriate questions about make and cloths (what was recommended/allowed) and it was explained to me that a OTR suit or custom was fine, no "best attire", judges would be judging fit and match with child. Make-up was allowed but explained that light make-up in her group would be recommended. So I purchased OTR swimwear and then embellished is with bows/flowers.....state level (I am crafty)Color of suit went great with her skin, fit was great. On the pageant day we arrived early, I had put my daughter's hair up (it is shoulderlenth and thick) I applied make-up, light foundation, powder, eye shadow (to compliment suit color) clush and tinted lip gloss. Her make was noticiable but appropriate. There were 5 girls in her group. All had 3 had swimsuits 2 had beach playwear. Only two were wearing make-up (mine included)All the girls were accompanied on stage by Mom except my daughter who goes by herself. She knows the T formation and does pretty feet and hands, turns ( a little too quickly) and also knows "knee pop". One little girl hid behind her mother the whole time, one cried, the other two walked to the X's with Mom in tow. I couldn't have ask my baby to do any better, for a 3 yr old she modeled great.
Crowning comes and my daughter recevied Queen in 0-3 age division......another got Grand 0-3.Let me explain further that the only score, only event was swimwear/beachwear, they did have a side event photogenic/portfolio but it did NOT count toward Grand. The little girl who rec Grand 0-3 wore a generic but cute playwear/tropical outfit, had a hairpiece, and had to be told where to go by Mom. I just don't get it. No matter how hard I try I never seem to get it just right. Most of the time I know where I went wrong, but this time it makes no sense. The little girl that beat my daughter was overweight, and never smiled on stage. Please understand, I don't expect my daughter to win every time, she will be beat many times, I do not want to sound as if I am bashing this child that won, I just don't get it. To make it worse, I rec my childs score sheets (3 judges) and she rec 10's in all catagories from all judges except for 2 9's....so the little girl that won had to have had just about perfect scores. My daughter has never scored that high, and now that she does, it is still no good enough for Grand? Judges wrote comments "beautiful child", "super modeling" "precious smile" "beautiful swimsuit". Where I am going wrong?

I know exactly how you feel. This happened to my daughter recently who is only 16 months. We had custom made stuff for a natural pageant, and since they wanted OTR stuff, we changed it to fit all the guidelines. They were judged on Beauty, Interview and Casual wear. In interview, my daughter shared, played with the other kids and was very outgoing. In beauty and casual wear, she did the best she has ever done and came out smiling, waving, blowing kisses, laughing the whole 9 yards. The little one who won smiled 1 time and didn't interact in interview. The one who won Beauty had on Rhinestones which was not supposed to be allowed, but was, and the one who won personality had NONE and had a custom made outfit on. It was really wierd. I am not saying my daughter should win everytime either, but I don't know what went wrong at this pageant. Needless to say, we won't be attending another pageant put on by this director because in no way, shape or form was it fair. I know what boat you are in. I say, try something else. Obviously that system isn't for you, and it sounds like your daughter should go on to bigger and better things. Congrats on her win though!!!

Ok but the problem is it keeps happening....at more than one system. My daughter always wins at least Queen or supremes her division but Grand keepd alluding us. Her cloths are right up there with the rest of them, her modeling is better than most at 3, her personality is great, but she keeps getting side stepped. I feel as if I am failing her, She is now with a coach who was at the last pageant (not coaching her at that time) and she herself does not know what went wrong. Opinion of the judges on that day....well it seems to be the opinion of judges everywhere that my daughter deserves to win but not win big....

Hi, I love this site, just found it today. My daughter is Chinese, adopted, and has just turned 7 in May. We have done two pageants locally and both times she has won 3rd place out of 11 the first time and 14 the second time. We are doing a pageant this weekend. I have someone to do the make-up for me. The hair is my problem. I have not had anyone do her hair where I really liiked it. It has been ok. Her hair is long, almost waist length. We roll it on benders but it will start falling quickly even with allot of hair spray. The last pageant she was in, she was still in the 4-6 cat., so this time is a new age group to us. The little girl that beat her last time had waist length hair and wore it down with a little curl at the end. There was more curl but we had to stand out side in the heat and they were all falling down. What should I do with her hair. Her dress has the opening in the back, with a ruffle around the neck area. Her dress is white.
Thanks
Sandi

Try using Redkens Hot Sets to hold curl. Spray each section well before rolling on hot rollers. Let the hair stay on rollers and cool for two hours. Tease lightly, smooth out and arrange the curls at the bottom. Spray all over with Freeze It in the gold can. Good luck!

I have an asian daughter!! We do lots of up hair styles and tons of barbies. The poster who advised hot sets is correct but they dont make it anymore so you have to find it online. Another good trick is before you go to a pageant, dont wash it for a couple days and see if it gets easier to deal with, on some kids it works, on others it does not.

Try with or without conditioner and trimming it. If her hair is really long lose a few inches, sometimes that helps. My daughters was very long and would not hold a curl for anything, after she got tired of the long hair, she cut it, now it is long again but holds a curl much better.

Can someone please tell me what is in style for the 1 year old division at Sunburst (state)?

Are the two color dresses still being worn...the dress is one color and the appliques or sequeces are white? Also if I brought a dress like this is there a way that I could dye the appliques to match the dress without ruining the design.

Thanks for the imput...I am very excited about our upcoming state pageant.

a lot of judges consider that out of date and will take points off for it. It would be a better investment to buy a glitz style dress that was low glitz in stones. Then you could add more stones for full glitz or medium glitz.

I really hope someone can help me, I am starting to get so confused! My daughter is 3, she is all girl, which I will be honest, I am not, I am more of a tomboy, so I am trying really hard to be accomidating, but my tastes are very plain and simple! This is where I need help, I have just been reading through this web site and it has answered alot of question, but rasied alot more. Since a baby everyone has told me that my daughter is beautiful, I think so, but I am bias!!! People still walk up to me in the street and complement her, everyone said I should put her into pageants, finally I gave in (with alot of pushing from my mother in law!!lol) She has now done 3 local pageants and I am obviously doing something wrong. She has long hair, I have tried it down and up, people always comment on how beautiful her hair looks, especially the last one, everywhere I turned people were talking about it. I have tried the more simple pageant dresses, and the more Glitz!
We will try on every dress in the store until that "one" just jumps at you, it all comes together, the shape, the color, her complextion, everything. I always research the requirements for each pageant, what is required and all the rules of what is allowed and what is not. Now I am putting her in what everyone is telling me is the appropriate pageant were, but now some people are saying 'more glitz'.
I was reading on the web page that not to do that, what should I do?
Also people are saying more make-up, this is where I start to have a problem, I usually put pressed powder, eye make up, and all that goes with that (except false eye-lashes) and tinted lip gloss, I thought that was enough for a 3 year old, am I wrong? And I do not do the fake tan thing, because I do not think it would go with her complextion, she would look silly.
The other problem I am having is on stage, she is only 3 so until this last one she would have someone on stage with her. This last time she wanted to do it all by herself, and she did, but everyone in her age group was 4 going on 5 and they were all pros, how does my daughter compete with that without me getting pushy? I want it to be fun for her, but to see her face everytime the girl next to her gets a bigger trophy, it's heart breaking. I want her to enjoy herself but I do not have the money for h/m and coaches. Where else can I get stage advice?
Basically I am asking what am I doing wrong with the dresses?
What should I be doing with her hair?
Should I put more make up on her?
And how do I help her with the stage?
I thought I was doing everything right, but I can't be.
Also I want to say to everyone who is going to state and nationals still as a newbie, you've got guts. I've seen some of these girls and I do not think my daughter will ever be ready for that, no matter how well I think she is doing in my heart!

Anyone who can help me please write back.
Thanks
Emma

Take a look at the dresses on consignment site like www.thelookpc.com./consignments and buy her a gorgeous dress, with all the glitz and make sure it is national level. The same with a pro-am outfit. Also consider buying her a casualwear. Make sure her attire fits well, is state or national level if you are doing a glitz type pageant and it suits her coloring. Good for her if she is doing it all by herself at 3 with no coaching! I would consider maybe getting her some occasional coaching or maybe some regular coaching with a local coach or one that travels out of state. This would teach her the beauty routine and work with you both on getting a pro-am or modelling routine started. If you dont want to go with the coach route, you could get some videos and observe how the national level girls do there routines and adapt them to your daughter and teach her your own ideas yourself. The make-up you are doing sounds fine but you could try some of the spray on self bronzer at home. You can get it in all sorts of colors even for the palest compelxions. If she is naturally tanned or "olive" skinned then you should be fine without it. Good luck and post a reply!

Hi, my name is Leslie and my daughter Syann is 16 months old. I'm trying to get her started in pageants right now and I love this site. I bought a gorgeous dress extremely cheap from ebay and it looks and fits my daughter just right but then I learned from the page on the site about dresses that the white appliques on the blue dress will make it out of style. I was devastated (although very grateful to know ahead of time!) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to dye it all to match without ruining it? I'm not able to buy expensive dresses as I have 3 children and my family of 5 lives off of one income (I'm a stay at home mom). I'm also having a bit of trouble getting started out. I've been told that Sunburst is a really great pageant but I can't get any responses from them (I've e-mailed them several times) and through web searches I haven't been able to find anything that looks legitimate. Also, my daughter has really fine hair and I'm not really sure what to do about it. I don't know how to use a child's hair piece (I never even knew they existed until I read this page!) or where to buy one. I could really use one or two good friends to help me through the beginning of my daughter's "pageantry career." (LOL) So if anyone could tell me (1) what to do about her dress, (2) what to do about her hair (3) how to get in touch with sunburst or any other legitimate pageant or anything else that might be of any help I would really appreciate it. Also, I'm not really sure how to get her to perform (she is only 16 months). Please feel free to e-mail me with any suggestions/advice. Any responses would be greatly appreciated as I would love for her to really enjoy pageants.

The sales clerk did not know what textile med. Is this in the paint dept? How is it sold? The paint comes in two ounce bottles and eight ounce bottles. How much of each will I need for the dress?

I plan to do a coorinating color for the bustle and shorter top layer of the skirt...how much will I need for this?

My grandaughter has been doing pageants for about three years and loves it. This will be the first pageant dress I have made. It is nice to be able to find a place to come for guidance and help. Most people don't have a clue what you are talking about when you try to describe pageant clothes.

My little girl is a about a size six and I need a medium glitz gently used pageant dress that is not white or yellow because she has very fair skin and blonde hair so those light colors won't work. I cannot afford to put $600.00 into a pageant dress. Does anyone have anything?

You are good at what you do.. I am the director of
Starry Eyez Pagents in Northern California. I have been haing the hardest time finding creative ways to advertise. How do most pageant moms find out where a pageant will be. How do you usually find out about local competitions? Also if you are ever in California I would love to have you host a one hour seminar for pageant moms. Can we hire you??

Most of the time, I found out about pageants on local voy boards that I frequent, by picking up paperwork at another pageant and from word-of-mouth referrals by pageant friends. Basically, I think you should just stick with it, and like any initial investment, be prepared to invest money at first to make a go. For example, don't cancel or shortchange gifts or crowns for lack of contestants - nothing will end your system faster. While we have been somewhat disappointed at the numbers at some pageants as we advanced, most newbies are just delighted to have the chance to compete and receive awards. Develop a reputation for always holding the pageant regardless of numbers and you will build a following of people who know that they can count on you. Best of luck! (p.s. Unfortunately, I have limited availability to do anything with the pageant world anymore since my daughter has moved on to theatre, singing and cheering and no longer competes)

Hi, we attend a lot of Calif pageant & have never heard of yours. A great place to advertise them to the pageant community is on the Bravo Board which is www.voy.com/139646/
Also find other big Calif pageant systems & attend their pageants & ask the directors to put out your paperwork. Universal Miss, Hawaiian Tropics, Royal Essence,Crowning Moments, Lacey's are some of the big systems here. You can find their sites on the net. WE love pageants in Calif.

Hi, I have a question. My Daughter is 2 yrs old. We wil be entering her into the Sweet Pes Pageant in Florida in a few weeks. I know NOTHING about pageant's. The web site said, Christmas Pageant, Sunday wear or Pageant Dress. I found a Pageant dress, no-glitz, Short poufy charles dicken's retro look,W/ a hat.ginham print. Is this a good pick or no? I also bought a toile puff slip to fluff the bottom out more.

Also, on a baby this young should i just put her hair in a ponytail with a bow? do the hat? or pouf it out?

I appreciate any advise!!! Thank You so much!

Oh one more question..At her age(very young 2 yr old) Do they expect them to walk on stage alone???

Email the director with any questions you have. In most systems, 2 year olds are not on stage alone. Try several different things with the hair, and make sure she won't take a bat or bow off if she doesn't like it.

Sweet Pea is very unpredictable. Some say wear the sunday best and some say go all out with the glitz. They all say it is based on personality but I have done 2 of her pageants and my daughter placed last in a non-glitz dress in the first and she won queen wearing a glitz dress. I really think it is how the judges feel. I have never done a "Xmas" pageant though - just a regular prelim. Where is the pageant at you are doing?

My daughter has done pageants since she was 10 month, she is now 4. You should take her on stage till she is at least 3 or really comfortable. I still go on with my daughter but stand aside, and bend down to wisper smile big or big wave.
No hats! most begining pageants and state pageants do not like hats. I would put her hair up high with a bow in the middle. You dont need alot of glitz, not until you get to a national pageant. Hope I could help. Heather

Please help...

I want to have my seamsress make my daughters dress, however i have to provide the material.

I have looked high and low for bubblegum pink or coral, lime green you name it chiffon and matching heavy lycra.

No one has it....I can't find anyone online. And everyone keeps telling me you cant dye chiffon and organza.

Does anyone have any online resources for fabric? or any advise????

You will have to paint the chiffon. I use apple barrel paint with the Fabric Medium. Both can be found at walmart. Almost every dress is painted to match the chiffon. Also, they make a organza pink that matches the bubble gum pink SS.

Hi everybody! I am a pageant mom that decided to scale back a couple of years ago. We did all the big nationals and won our share, but it just got to be too much. So we quit. Recently, my daughter decided she wanted to be in pageants again and I decided it would be best to get back into the swing of things at some local pageants. Well, she won one last weekend and I was just as excited when they put that little tiara on her head as I was when she won Supremes at big nationals. Isn't that funny??!! Anyway, that's my background, but now I have a H/M question. I've always done her hair myself, and can do it quite well (I thought I'd lose my touch, but I didn't - wow) but I have never done an updo. She is riding in a parade on Saturday and I don't want to have to do the super frozen look to keep her curls and teasing in (she has fine hair) I have seen some styles on some sites that I thought would look really good on her, but I don't know how to do them. It's where the bangs are slicked diagonally across the forehead and there's a slight poof then all those curls on top. Every time I've tried to do curls up top I end up with frizz or these stringy things hanging down all around her head. I want that full bouquet of curls fluffed up on top. I know it can be done because for a photo the H/M did it and it looked gorgeous. I just can't figure it out. Anybody out there help?

I have a four year old daughter that has been competeing in pageants for about 6 months now. She has been in a couple of Hawaiian Tropic and 5 prelims for a natural scholarship program type pageant. The natural, low glitz pageants are fun and she wins alot but I think its time to try something different. I'm just not sure if she is ready to go to a glitz pageant. When will I know?? Obviously, we need a dress and what not but do I need a coach? How should I know what to expect if we go to a glitzier prelim? I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for me. Thank you!

When my daughter was little I enetered her in a couple of local and state pageants, but she never seemed to like to compete. Well, now she is 14, and has been begging me to enter her in a "southern glitz" type national this summer, but the thing is I can't afford it. I mean, I can afford the pageant fees, but there is no way I could pay for a gown, sportswear, etc. I've been looking on consignment websites, but those dresses are still out of my price range or way out of date. I was wondering if you have any tips on attaining sponsers and what-not. I really would love to do this for my daughter. Thanks!!

Ask local businesses and shops, and go in person. Tell them that you are looknig for sponsors to help cover the costs related to the pageant, such as the dress, etc., and not the entry fee. Most companies are more than happy to help in any way. Be sure to let them know what you are using the money for, and send them a follow-up after the pageant. My family has done this numerous times, as there are four of us competeing. Many times, we have had every expense paid for by sponosors.

I am the author and I do not believe that I have all of the pageant knowledge in the world but I have learned quite a bit along the way. Many people have been very helpful to us as we started out and my daughter and I wanted to, in turn, help others if possible. I did compete sucessfully as a teen and my daughter competes successfully on a state and national level. (she currently holds 15 state, regional and national titles and has won over $4,500 in 2002. I am not saying that to brag but to emphasize that she started out brand new a very few years ago and has worked her way up (and our pageant investment has not been huge). As I stated, I am not employed in any way in anything remotely to do with the pageant industry. (I don't even do my friend's H/M! lol!) If you do not agree with the website, that is absolutely fine - after all, all you invested was your time! One thing I have learned, however, is that there are those in pageants who will bash anything or anyone. I will avoid placing my daughter's name out there for bashing and if the website causes that, then I will simply erase it.

Hi, Great site!! My daughter is 10 months old and been in a couple local pretty baby contests and 3 pageants (full glitz, Sunburst and a natural) I think she will do better in the full glitz type pageants. We are in Ohio and the full glitz type are "total package" pageants. I need info on what is acceptable for hair and make up. She has hair past her shoulder blades and her bangs can be slicked over to the side. Her hair is thin though. Someone suggested a hair doughnut. What is this, where can I get one and is it appropriate at this age? Also what kind and how much make up should I use? I have a great headshot that we had retouched and am planning her portfolio. All of the pageants say no more than 10 pictures in the port. how many different outfits should I use? I have talked to several moms of girls in the next older age group and of the 2 year old group and they say they just use Jcpenney, Sears, Olan Mills etc so I'm going to take a few outfits to each one and have alot to choose from with different backgrounds etc. Should I just use plain backgrounds with no props? We have a westernwear, sleepwear, her beauty dress, cheerleading outfit, casual rwb outfit, a hollywood babe outfit, valentines casual wear, swimwear, a pleather skirt and jacket and Christmas outfit w/ bloomers would that be too many different looks to have one pic of each in the port?
Thanks a bunch

As a general rule, if the outfit for the picture is very decorative or very eye-catching, the background should be a little more subdued. On the other hand, if the outfit is not very fancy or if it is very casual, play it up with props and background. As for my personal opinion, don't use 10 different outfits for 10 pictures. 6-8 outfits with one or two repeats is safer and not so confusing. I would recommend using the western wear, beauty dress, cheerleading outfit, swimwear, pleather, and casual RWB outfit for a nice variety. Anything seasonal such as Christmas or Valentine's will seem out-of-place if they are not used during their respective seasons.

I have never obtained sponsors for my child and it has never hurt her chances for a title. She has won state titles for Cover Miss, Sunburst, etc. and has never had an ad page. Most pageants like for you to do it because it makes more money for them and most will allow some fees off if you sell a certain amount but you might as well get used to paying for pageants yourself because very, very few businesses are going to sponsor you unless it is a bridal shop or jewelry store in a hometown "little miss" pageant.

I have to disgree with you. I have always been very able to get sponsors not only for myself but for all my children as well. I also compete and have never (except for the first) paid out of pocket for any fees, dresses, accessories,h/m,shoes. I get it all paid for by a sponsor, who might I add are very excited when I return with the title. ( I have 9) So it's not impossible, I guess you have to be a people person. But anyone can do it. I get pictures of my kids, some of them entry photos, and I create a sponsor letter on my computer and walk around to local businesses and get their fees taken care of. The thing to do is know what you will need to attend this pageant. Example: my daughter needs her entire entry fee, photo retouch, dress material ( I make all their pageant clothing), shoes, fall, make-up,socks, sportswear material, talent material, any music or special adsditions. I add it up and present that to my "potential sponsors" as my pageant fee. I then create a nice portfolio with the pageant entry form included for her to carry around and present it to her sponsors. (I go with her of course) They are very impressed and pleased that she came and is nicely dressed in interview wear or Sunday best and her hair is done with very little make-up.
She has been doing this for 3 years now and recently started winning her titles. If I can do it and my kids can do it, I know that anybody can. Just takes patience and class. (smile) Thanks for letting me share

Large corporations like KMart and WalMart or any other company you know is located across the country will not sponsor individuals. Try local businesses such as salons, restaurants, small grocery stores, etc. Some salons will sponsor you by giving you services at no charge. Always go in person, and take the prospective contestant along, dressed nicely but casually. Always keep the names and addresses of all sponsors, and send them a ThankYou card and picture with a note about the results after the pageant. Good luck.

Hi, my name is Brittany, too. I am 18, and have competed in several pageants. The secret is to practice as much as you can. If your pageant is in July, you have plenty of time. It's nice to be liked by the other girls, but you have to remember that they are not the judges. Make sure you feel comfortable in your dress and shoes, and test-run your hair and makeup. Practice walking in your shoes if you are not used to wearing heels. Smile, smile, smile. Even when your jaws hurt and your lips feel like Jell-O. Walk slowly and keep your chin up. Write back, and the best of luck with your pageants!

Go with the color of your eyes if they are blue or green. Choose bright colors, because they look better with blonde hair than light colors that can make you look washed out. Red or bright pink are also great choices. Tan skin and blonde hair can really shine with a gold dress, especially if it is glittery or beaded. Good luck!

All the other little girls have hair down to their waist , but my daughters hair is thin, fine, short (just past her shoulders) I guess it hasn't been a problem I usually do curls but I have to battle with them to keep them intact throught the whole pageant....(and you know how long that is!) I am an 18 year old girl that has competed in several local pageants. I have 3 younger sisters that also compete, one of which is 9 years old, and her hair is short, thin and fine. We always do our own hair. My secret is to use foam rollers on damp hair, but you have to sleep on them for atleast one night. Redken makes a great hairspry called WillPower, about $10. It will hold through a tornado. You can also use the Redken spray on dry hair with hot rollers or an iron, but be sure to use it both before and after curling. Good luck in the future pageants!

Hi! I love your site. It is very informative and helpful to those of us that are just starting out. I just recently learned what ProAm is. I was taking my daughter to a coach, but the drive is an hour, and it is very tedious to go, then we spent the last month before our competition visiting family several hours away, leaving my daughter and myself on our own for creating two of her routines. One did great (we were more on target with the theme) and the other one was...well, it blew chunks!! LOL A friend said that routine videos can be bought on-line. Have you heard of this before? I was thinking of doing as you suggested: asking a local dance studio if they could help, but I'd like to take in some examples of what I am looking for.
Please let me know! Thanks!

Plain white shoes usually the satin dyeable kind are what all the girls wear that I have seen. And they usualy just wear white socks that fold over with little or no ruffle. The first few pageants we went to I put big frilly "pageant" socks on my baby and no one else had that kind on.

Amy, I wanted to say thanks for the info., I couldn't find white shoes before the pageant, I realised the color thing to late,LOL, so my girls wore the black ones. They ended up doing realy well! My 7yr old won Sweetheart & was 1st runner-up in beauty. My 4yr old won Prettiest eyes. Not bad for a first pageant I think.

You should dye it before you sew it, ideally, so that it is even (however, I have heard of people dyeing clothes afterwards, as well)

I was contacted by a mom to be a coach to her 17 yr. old daughter who is entering a Miss Teen USA state pageant. I have no experience in pageantry, but I am a professional runway model and work both large venues (NY Bryant Park, etc.) and smaller venues (Neiman Marcus Grand Openings, Saks, etc.)as well as print modeling. I am also a professional m.u. artist and aesthetician. My husband and I own our own photography studio which caters almost entirely to the modeling industry and we have worked with experienced models from the larger agencies like IMG, NEXT, Ford, Elite, Women, DNA, IM New York and others. He is straight from Italy, here 10 yrs., and we style all of our shoots together. I am a public speaker and I act in theatre productions. My downfall is definitely not knowing the climate of pageants or the pro-am style of choreography. I can teach a girl to carry an evening gown like nobody's business and how to turn so that when she looks into the audience, all she sees is the bottoms of people's shoes. I can teach her how to be confident regarding whatever topic she chooses and I can teach her stage make-up because it is so close to the photography make-up techniques we employ. We do portfolio work for models and help them assemble their books for clients too. (The last girl we helped out for a state Miss Teen USA pageant won at the state level with our photo. I did not help her with any part of her pageant, beyond the picture.) Should I offer my services to this young woman? Or does she belong in the hands of someone who has real pageant experience?

If I can't afford a coach what things can I do to teach my daughter poise? She just turned 3 and she gets little wired when she is on stage. She can't quite hold her feet in place and I dont know if I should be teaching her something specific or just letting her be natural. She has only done 2 pageants. Thank you for your HANDBOOK it is great.

You can easily teach her the basics if she will listen to you (some children listen to Moms better than others! lol!). It is best to take her some place that has a stage area to practice (maybe a church fellowship hall, school or community center). You need to know in advance the pattern that you want to teach. (A front T or back T) Mark the pattern onstage with masking tape X's. Your daughter should come out onto the stage and stand in "pretty feet". (the toe of back foot points slightly off to the right. The left foot is slightly in front with the toe pointing off to the left and the heel of the left foot touches the instep of the right) She will pause and then do a step-step turn. Hard to describe how to do it - go to a pageant and watch someone who knows how. She will pause after the turn and then walk to the next X and repeat until she reaches the back x and is dismissed. I can't really describe it all here but teaching your daughter yourself can certainly be done. Go to a pageant and watch or buy a tape of your age division to see the pattern and what the girls are expected to do. Good luck!

My daughter is 3 1/2 and wants to do pageants sooo badly. Its been completely her idea so now I am researching it a little bit. Sadly Las Vegas does not hold very many pageants, also the information that I've found (or lack there of) has not helped me to be sure I know what to do when we go to our first pageant. (LOCAL) My daughter doesn't have a lot of hair and I have no idea how to do her make up. I've been such a wreck trying to pick out an outfit (found one today thank the Lord) But after 3 weeks of searching through pageant material I FOUND THIS SITE! Thank you so much. But I still need more info. Do you think that pageants are something that my daughter just has to experience. And what is straight walking??? They ask for no PRO AM at the pageant she is going to and because she is only 3 I have to go up with her? What do I do? What does she do?? I'm so confused! PLEASE HELP!!

First of all - relax! Remember that this is supposed to be fun. Your daughter will pick up on your stress and nervousness and it will not help her to enjoy the experience. Second, do not be afraid to ask questions of the director. I would be leery of any pageant where the director refused to answer your questions or was not helpful. All "newbies" have a lot to learn so asking questions clarifies things for you about a particular pageant (because some things do vary). "Straight" modeling simply means no bouncy pro am walk and no dancing-modeling moves. Do ask your director whether your daughter should turn, wave at the judges or whether she should stand still. Also, ask the director about what she expects as far as make-up, etc. If you go out with her, make sure you wear neutral clothing (preferably slacks) and do not call attention to yourself. Walk out with your daughter and then squat down behind her. There you can whisper to her to smile, etc. Also, don't put too much pressure on her (and you) to win this first pageant. She (and you) will gain experience and knowledge that will help her improve in the future. Good luck!

I can do 2 piggy tails but is that appropriate (its a swimsuit pageant) I thought I could do the two little piggy tails with pretty flowers in her hair and call it good. But is this good enough? Is a headband better? and if so how big should it be?? I see some girl with HUGE flowers and other with dainty bows. What do you suggest?? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Is it close up appraisal or interview? In many pageants, "interview" is really just close up appraisal - an opportunity to see the contestant close up to judge facial beauty, etc. The judges may ask a question or two but it is just to have something for the contestant to do rather than just silently being stared at. (Sunburst is like this) "Miss America" type pageants do have interview where the responses to the questions count but I have never heard of the responses from a toddler counting for a title! Maybe you should talk to the Director to make sure that what the child says actually counts.

I guess it is kind of the like close up appraisal. It's a universal miss state pageant. Last time one of the judges told me I needed to have my daughter practice her smile. They scored her really low.

I have heard that the skirt needs to end at the finger tips (or be a little below) when the the arms are at the side. I have also heard of people taking items to have them air brushed where they live. You can probably find someone in your town or city that can match the exact color you want.

It depends on what her hair is like. Headbands work well for babies with little or no hair because they make them look more feminine. However, don't do one if they are going to pull it off. Can you pull up the front in a "sprout" with a little bow and then fluff the rest? Or maybe pull it all up and use one of the hair "donuts" from Sally's? It is really hard to say without seeing your child. I would probably consult with a H/M artist for other suggestions.

I have tried the sport thing on top. It takes hairspray. I was worried it would be in appropriate for 18 months. I worry that I will made my daughter look too old, even though the hair style looks great on her. I am from New Mexico and here we don’t have a lot of pageants. Only two. Here people don’t really get into all the make up and stuff. I’m just afraid if I did do it I would be look down upon.

This is a wonderful board, first of all. We are pretty new to the pageant world, and it is soo hard to find information.
I have a question about shoes for my 9 year old daughter. We are starting off at the local level, and slowly getting our things together to go bigger. It has taken me awhile to find out if she is supposed to be wearing short, or long dresses. I have had alot of different answers on this, and at the local level, I am seeing both on children in her age group. I have finally chosen a short dress for now, but what about shoes? I know they should be white. But satin, glossy, matte, plain, heel or no? And socks? Lace, plain, or matching material from her dress?
I was just amazed at the amount of rules to pageantry, yet the lack of information. People just don't want to give it up in this hobby, there seems to be a learn it yourself attitude. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi.... what I see for that age is matte Mary Janes (crepe or leather - satin is difficult to keep clean and makes their feet look bigger). A little bit of a heel looks good on that age. You can get them at a bridal store, better shoe store or online (colorifics is one brand). Best of luck!

Oops! Forgot to answer your question about the socks. The socks should be thin, made out of a light, stretchy material. (super-cheap socks don't work as well). Can be synthetic or cotton but make sure they are tight-fitting so they don't sag. They usually have a small amount of white lace. (but nothing big or fluffy or they will have that "clydesdale" look!) Roll them over at the top so the lace meets the shoe. Best Wishes!

Unfortunately, that section does not yet exist. I sew my daughter's clothes (self-taught) and planned to offer tips that I have learned but haven't gotten around to writing them down yet. However, there is a great board where you can ask questions and get advice on sewing pageant clothes... <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://voy.com/77795/">http://voy.com/77795/</a> so, hopefully, that will help out some.

This ia a very nice and informative site. You did a very good job and very eloquently worded. I also have a daughter who does pageants and I would have liked to had a chance to see something like this when we started out. A suggestion, maybe you should also make a list of pageants with links and the type of pageant they are. High Glitz, Low, natural, ect. I think that would be a great addition to the handbook. I also think you should try to put it in print. As a pageant director I would love to send these out to anyone who requested an entry form for information!

AND......It doesn't matter who you are and if you have credentials...<b>that goes to the pageant mom's comment</B>.. last I knew there was not a program of study in the local universities to certify ANYONE in the pageant word, it is all based on experience! That's where you get your credentials. You did a great job! Keep up the good work and don't worry about anyone who tells you otherwise!

You first page was very funny to me, cause I remember those days very clearly. Yep won that local yocal pageant and we were hooked for 4 years.
