1. George W. Bush signed a law in Texas that expressly gave hospitals the right to remove life support if the patient could not pay and there was no hope of revival, regardless of the patient's family's wishes. It is called the Texas Futile Care Law. Under this law, a baby was removed from life support against his mother's wishes in Texas just this week. A 68 year old man was given a temporary reprieve by the Texas courts just yesterday.
Those of us who read liberal blogs are also aware that Republicans have voted en masse to pull the plug (no pun intended) on medicaid funding that pays for the kind of care that someone like Terry Schiavo and many others who are not so severely brain damaged need all across this country.

2. The "tort reform" that is being contemplated by the Republican congress would preclude malpractice claims like that which has paid for Terry Schiavo's care thus far.

3. The new GOP-backed bankruptcy bill will make it even more difficult for families who suffer a catastrophic illness like Terry Schiavo's because they will not be able to declare chapter 7 bankruptcy and get a fresh start when the gargantuan medical bills become overwhelming.

4. This grandstanding by the congress is a purely political move designed to appease the religious right and that the legal maneuverings being employed would be anathema to any true small government conservative.

We're witnessing a spectacle on television in which the news anchors repeatedly say that the congress is "stepping in to save Terry Schiavo" mimicking the unctuous words of Tom Delay as they grovel and leer at the family and nod sympathetically at the sanctimonious phonies who are using this issue for their political gain.

This is why we cannot trust the mainstream media. Most people get their news from television. And television is presenting this issue as a round the clock one dimensional soap opera pitting the "family", the congress and the church against this woman's husband and the judicial system that upheld Terry Schiavo's right and explicit request that she be allowed to die if extraordinary means were required to keep her alive. The ghoulish infotainment industry is making a killing by acceding once again to trumped up right wing sensationalism.

I bet not many "pro-Bush" folks know this, or would have much to say about it... but Americans ought to know that OUR paid-by-our-taxes servicemen and women in Iraq were on the clock being ordered to shuttle Iraqi voters to the polls from their homes and back.

You KIDDING me??? We saw the GOP RAVE about the "turnout" in the Iraqi election, then we find out our troops were the reason they showed up - because THEY were taxiing them?

Heck, for that matter, we hear right-wingers scoff when churches and civic organizations help shut-ins to the polls, here... but I hear no such scoffing from them about this.

What if we asked our troops serving here to go into dangerous neighborhoods to get voters safely to their polling places, here, too?

LETTING COPS LIVE ELSEWHERE COULD BENEFIT N.O. ECONOMICALLY, SAYS EXPERT

New Orleans city leaders are considering amending the domicile law in order to allow cops live outside the city, but could it have unintended consequences?

Domicile law supporters say changing it could have a negative economic impact on New Orleans, if police officers that currently live here pack up and move.

Economist Dub Lane at UNO says it is possible that changing the domicile requirements could results in some officers moving out to the suburbs and taking some of their money with them, but he says it would be more than worth it to have a safer city.

“If we can get that extra 200 police and improve safety in the city and make other people want to live here, that benefit would be an order of magnitude bigger,” said Professor Lane.

Lane says he does not think enough police officers would move out of the city to make a significantly negative impact on the city’s economy.

My husband and I are so sick and tired of the X-rated material on Rush's show. But if we turn it off (like I just did), nine times out of ten, we end up missing the first hour or so of Sean Hannity. I truly would rather hear a repeat of the Talk-Back Live with Dave and Bob and Moon's show than to have to be subjected to this drivel that Rush has been dishing out for the last couple of years. The only time it's worth listening to is when there is a guest host. KSYL is the ONLY talk show station we can receive in our rural area, and we can't even get cable internet so that we could listen to streaming audio like we use to during Rush's show time. Can't somebody do something to get the world's biggest windbag off the air?

From WWL Web SIte

Calling it a matter of public safety, New Orleans Police Superintendent Eddie Compass has come out in favor of lifting the residency requirement for police officers. The police chief says the city must do this if they want recruit more officers and keep the ones they have.

Compass for years had stayed out of the very heated debate, saying it is not his job to make or change laws. Now, he says the department has tried everything else to build the force and it has not worked.

The Police Foundation of New Orleans says a study they did in conjunction with UNO a couple of years ago shows the residency requirement is an obstacle to recruitment and retention. With Chief Compass now supporting the change, the challenge is convincing a majority of the city council to agree.

Public Service Commssion says it is a regulatory agent. When are they going to investigate these allegations by the City of Alexandria? If CLECO has nothing to hide, then they certainly shouldn't mind cooperating, right? Is CLECO calling in a few political favors perhaps???

Welcome to the Louisiana Public Service Commission Website

The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) is an independent regulatory agency dedicated to serving the public interest by assuring safe, reliable, and reasonably priced services for the public utilities and motor carriers.

The LPSC consists of five elected Commissioners who serve overlapping terms of six years and a staff of 122, created by Article IV, Section 21 of the 1921 Constitution of the State of Louisiana. It succeeded the Railroad Commission of Louisiana that was created by the 1898 Constitution.

The overall goals of the Commission are to ensure a regulatory balance that enables utilities to provide customers with safe, adequate and reliable service, at rates that are just and reasonable, equitable and economically efficient, and that allow utilities an opportunity to earn a fair rate of return on their investment.

In addition, the Commission continues to take an active and cautious role in development of a competitive, market-based approach to utility regulation whenever such an approach is in the public interest.

Ya know, President Bush delivered a fine speech, all-in-all. I disagree with his assessment of Social Security's "dire" situation, when Medicaid threatens to strangle the nation's economy much sooner, but it's a bigger battle and I think, for political reasons, nobody wants to tackle it and look bad failing, so SS is the easier, bigger-and-easier-to-handle problem.

What I did take GREAT offense to, however, was Louisiana congressman Bobby Jindal orchestrating the "dipped finger" stunt to present this visual one-upmanship from the right side of the aisle.

Last I checked, Mr. Jindal hadn't served a day in the military. Most of those who joined him in his inked-finger presentation have no military background, either. If ANYBODY had a right to join the Iraqis who bravely went to the polls, it would be our servicemen and women who have either sacrificed time, life or limb in Iraq to liberate that country.

Bobby's cheap political ploy was disgusting. I'm sick and tired of this GOP vs. Democrat "show" in Washington. This sort of visual aid he chose to piece together is the very kind of arrogant "so THERE!" sort of childish actions that I believe sicken many Americans. It wasn't a display of solidarity with Iraqi citizens; it was a display of support for Bush's Iraq policy.

Here's an idea, Mr. Jindal...instead of harumphing the success of the Iraqis going to the polls, why don't you and your co-horts work on a policy that requires the United States' leadershp to have an actual post-invasion and exit strategy at least drawn up before we go gun-toting into nations under vague (and what turned out to be false) assumptions.

Mr. Jindal should spend a little time in Washington before showing his obvious immaturity for the position with such 'frat-house-style' pranks.

I listened with interest to your topic about littering this morning. I certainly could relate, after all, I lived in New Orleans for over 20 years. After moving from New Orleans to Houston, I revisited that historic city with new eyes. It had never looked so... trashy... to me. And on my first return visit I fully understood the extent of the problem.

I took a shuttle bus from the airport to downtown along with a group of mostly tourists. The driver was amiable and spoke with that unique accent you only find in New Orleans. He pointed out the local landmarks and added interesting bits of history. I am sure the Convention bureau would have been proud of the welcome he gave newcomers to the city. But I am also sure they would have been dismayed by what I witnessed next.

When arriving at my destination, I handed him a tip with the stub from my shuttle ticket. He pocketed the tip, rolled up the stub and tossed it on the ground in view of all the tourists. I was immediately embarrassed. Trying to save face, I retrieved the stub and handed it back to him saying "you must have dropped this". Still not getting it, he replied. "Naw. its trash" and threw it down again.

It is a shame that the local shuttle company that probably spent substantial money training these drivers to entertain the riders did not invest a little time on instructing them on community pride and common ettiquette.

And that says it all.

If a young person started to work today and earned $30,000 per year(in today's dollars)for 40 years he would pay $310 each month in social security taxes and $72.50 in medicare taxes. According to the Social Security Administration this person would be paid less than $1,000 per month in social security benefits at age 62. At 65 he would be eligible for Medicare at a rate of about $60 or $70 per month. Of course, he will have to supplement Medicare at about $200+ per month. When he dies, his family will get nothing.
Had this young person had invested his social security deduction each month and earned on average 6%, he would have over $600,000 in 40 years. These savings would pay him $36,000 per year for the rest of his life, and when he did die, his family would receive the money. Had he invested his medicare taxes, he would have $140,000 after 40 years. This investment would produce $8,400 per year and when he died his family would get the money.
Please give me one good reason this system should be saved.

I was anxious to get my newspaper yesterday and see what our local paper had to say about the historic Iraqi elections. I just knew that was one I would save for my kids.

You can imagine my disappointment when there was no headline and the most prominent story on the front page had to do with a local cemetary cleanup complete with color photos.

The closest thing I could find was the article on the far right (symbolic I guess) reading something to the effect "Iraqis line up to vote".

Know the cemetary cleanup is important to those local families who have relatives buried there. But the Iraqi elections will affect an entire nation for generations. And perhaps the future of the entire reagion or greater.

And this is not the first time. Quite a few noteworthy local events of late have been ommitted in favor of articles like "women who scavenge through other peoples trash". Gee sounds like an episode of day time TV.

I know the Town Talk has more resources than the average citizen. Then why is it that we have to go to TV or the internet for truly important news. If it were not for the local busiess advetisements, I probably would cancel the newspaper altogether.

President Bush's budget would more than double the co-payment charged to many veterans for prescription drugs and would require some to pay a new fee of $250 a year for the privilege of using government health care, administration officials said Sunday.
The proposals, they said, are in the $2.5 trillion budget that Mr. Bush plans to unveil on Monday. White House officials said the budget advanced his goal of cutting the deficit, which hit a record last year.

Hey, I'm ALL for lowering the deficit this administration's created... but not on the backs of those who served.

When I was watching the State of the Union address I wondered why President Bush singled out asbestos claims when he mentioned tort reform and said...

"Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back, by irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims - and I urge Congress to pass legal reforms this year."

Then I saw the AP report the next day...

SEATTLE - More than 100 Northwest families have won a $30 million settlement in an asbestos lawsuit involving a subsidiary of Houston-based Halliburton Co.

The deal was part of a $4.3 billion global settlement encompassing Halliburton's past, present and future asbestos liabilities, Matthew Bergman, a lawyer who represented the families, said Thursday. [...]

Dresser Industries, a subsidiary of Halliburton acquired when Vice President Dick Cheney was chairman of the company, distributed asbestos products to shipyards, power plants and industrial facilities.

Plaintiffs alleged Dresser officials knew their products were harmful to workers in the 1930s but continued to distribute them through the mid-1970s.

BRAVO! Senator Mary Landrieu (D), followed later this week by Senator David Vitter (R) of Louisiana have BOTH now come out against the Bush administration's defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, for ABUSING and OVER-USING the National Guard for the war in Iraq.

It's nice to know that there is finally BIPARTISAN representation speaking up for the mis-use of our men and women in this unjust war. I expected this sort of talk from Mary (and was thankful for it), but I'm also shocked and overwhelmingly elated to see that Vitter will not be a Bush administration puppet, but will represent the state with the most Guardsmen in Iraq per capita.

He addressed Americans? Who needed convincing that democracy would be embraced in a country once ruled by a dictator? Himself, those that voted for him?

I'm just trying to figure out... why did President Bush use his power to call the nation's media to an informal address to tell AMERICANS how an election went in Iraq?

Is it because 60% of AMERICANS now don't believe our going into Iraq was the right thing to do?

Hey, it's always wonderful when an oppressed nation gets to participate in a democratic process. But the families of the nearly 1,500 lost AMERICAN souls have to be wondering... did my son/daughter die for his/her country, or for Iraq's?

Our military had to essentially sit in Iraq, amongst all the danger of insurgent attacks, kidnappings, car-bombings, etc., for seven months while we told the world of our intentions to invade Fallujah.

We gave...
1. The opposition seven months to prepare
2. Bush seven months to win re-election

Which do you think adverseley affects the safety and well-being of our troops over there? I say both.

Why did we WAIT and WAIT and WAIT to attack Fallujah AFTER the election? To keep the bloodshed to a minimum so that the Bush re-election bid wouldn't have to suffer from the negativity of such. That's wrong. Our loved ones serving abroad shouldn't be tools of the campaign, and most certainly shouldn't be purposely held back from completing their tasks sooner than later.

The excuse that it costs the board the same amount of $$ is accurate. The problem I have is that there are plenty of qualified people that need a good job. By letting a person retire and then rehire into the same position the poor guy or gal at the bottom of the ladder never gets a chance to improve thier situation. If you want to retire, then do it all the way and let the youger generation have a shot at advancement and prosperity. The notion that you get to retain an experienced employee is true, but how can anyone ever get experience when the old foggies won't get out of the way. By the way, I am 57 years old, retired and out of the way. There is a young man and his young family filling my spot and the company has not gone under yet! My term to this situation is greed and the indication that these "retiree's/rehiree's" have spent so much time climbing the ladder that they have not embraced the immortality equation.
